I have a 2008 (4th gen) with 298k miles. I never buy cars with high miles but took a chance on this one 4 years ago with 206k miles. I got a very good deal on it so I figured if it didn’t last, it would be a lesson learned. Fast forward till now and I have been around the US several times. This is by far one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.

These vehicles will go forever. Our ‘01 4Runner with over 200k mi is running like a Swiss watch. Same with our ‘99 Lexus LX470. The frames were rust protected long ago, and other than regular maintenance handled by our independent mechanic, there’s not much to else add. Truly magnificent machines.

@@elir.torres8642 Tend to find that Japanese cars built in Japan don't prioritise rust protection, particularly for the Asian market. Never really any need to salt the roads. Export cars never normally have the same level of rust protection than those built in the USA and Europe. But to me that's no real problem. Just factor in rust protection every few years, come purchase time. The mechanicals will still keep going. My dad had a Datsun 120Y back in the late 90's. Never, ever missed beat - it was also so silent you had to rev the engine to check if it was still idling or not! but the bodywork eventually fell off, failing inspections. Eventually we used it as a transporter vehicle on my uncle's farm. Lasted for years.

Change the oil every 5000 miles, keep the underbody coated, and fight the slightest trace of rust formation with a vengeance, and let the Wizard take care of minor maintenance work. Then you can run the vehicle for many many more years. Also get to know the Car Care Nut, in the highly unlikely event that you ever encounter any mechanical issue. Between him and the Wizard your vehicle will probably outlast you. Even if you're still young. ☺👍

I just traded in a Ford Exploder on a 2016 Toyota 4Runner Limited in pearlescent white on Friday the 26th. Even though the Toyota had 81,000 miles it felt more durable and substantial than the Ford, and with the body on frame it was much quieter than a unibody design. Absolutely love it !

It is great! One thing to be ware of though is the limited came with the X-reas suspension. It is awesome until it needs to be replaced. Over $4000. Most people ditch it for the standard SR5 suspension when that time comes.

I have a 2002 SR5 Runner with 342 on the dash, the motor was remanufactured because someone abused it, everything still works, and i mean everything, the back window, the heater is hot, the AC is freezing cold, everything youd want to have in a car still works. One word: Toyota!

It has the dual climate control, moonroof, puddle lights, factory remote start, heated seats, soft tex seats, auto headlamps, auto high beams, KDSS, crawl control, multi terrain select, 360 cameras, blind spot, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure. Oh there is defintely a TRD OFF ROAD Premium well before 2025.

Someone that lives in my area still drives a mid 1990s 4Runner around all the time; they just keep on going if you take care of them, even in a more harsh northern climate like Ontario. Exactly. I never recommend people buy a used Toyota. By the time they're an affordable used car, they've been beaten to death and neglected by 5 prior owners and ends up being just as much of a pain as the Acadia. I spent $8700 on a 2010 Sienna in a year and a half. Definitely not the Toyota reliability experience. If you want to enjoy the Toyota reliability experience, buy it brand new. You'll get a better finance rate, some insurance companies give you a new car discount, and the full length warranty + Toyotacare.

We have four 4R in the family - a 2008 Sport (205k miles); 2010 SR5 (150k); 2012 Limited (165k) and 2014 Limited (90k). No problems at all. The 2008 is still on the original everything! I've only changed the usual wear items. We are sold on the 4R for reliability, safety, and durability. The 4.0-L V6 is bulletproof.

Second owner of a 2002 T4R, just passed 350,000 on original motor and trans. Never stranded. Purchased Jan of 2013 with 144,000. Looking for a 2014+ as a replacement and letting my teenagers drive the '02. Wizard, you are right on about these trucks. We've camped, trailed, and hauled with this thing. Easy to work on too. I work at a Toyota dealer and had a 15 4Runner like this one come in with 425K miles on it that had been meticulously maintained it’s whole life. Original engine and transmission. It was towed into us because another dealer messed up a repair and forgot to reattach the fuel line to the injector rail, so not the fault of the vehicle at all. Still looked brand new, inside and out and ran like a sewing machine. I test drove it after the repairs were done and the transmission still shifted like butter. It was amazing to see how well it held up, this 1GR-FE and 5AT powertrain is easily at the top of the list as one of the most solid powertrains ever made.

Toyota Rocks! Just do the maintenance! We have owned Toyota products since 1990. NO REGRETS. Current 2011 RX350, 180,000 miles, 3 batteries, 1 alternator, ORIGINAL ALIGNMENT AND ROTORS, 2nd set of tires and brake pads!! Everything works as it should and you can still read all the markings on the interior controls. Gonna keep to see just how many miles we can get. Our 2000 Camry rolled 300,000 miles 2 years ago, sold it to a friend when we got the RX.

Around the year 2000, a friend of mine bought a totaled 1997 4Runner which had about 40 to 50,000 miles on it. He repaired the damage, had it inspected, got the "rebuilt" title, then drove it for 15 to 16 years and finally sold it with about 310,000 miles on it. The guy to whom he sold it still uses it today to drive around on his property in the north-Georgia mountains. These are simply un-killable vehicles.

I have an 03 Highlander with 200,000 mi on it. I have a '05 Lexus ES 330 with 250,000 mi on it. I recently picked up a 2011 4Runner with 180,000 miles on it. I make sure I buy vehicles with excellent maintenance records. One owner no. Collisions. All of my vehicles run like brand new. None of them have rattles. I second the wizard suggestion to buy a Toyota if they are maintained and clean the properly they last forever.

There's a one million mile Tundra out there. It's used to run parts back and forth for oil field parts. It was serviced by a Toyota dealer in Oklahoma. That dealer had another Tundra that was also coming up to one million miles. That dealership is doing a good job maintaining those Tundras.

right before covid, i had a choice. 03 Highlander for $5k with 120k miles, or an 03 4Runner for $8k with similar miles. I chose the highlander. I regret not choosing the 4runner after learning so much about them. The highlander hasn't been bad, its given me no problems and is in very good shape. It should last 300k easy, but looking back I kick myself for not jumping on that 4runner.

06 Highlander Hybrid, 142,000km / 88,234 mikes +/-, ZERO PROBLEMS…… The big difference with Forerunner is can you afford the gas? If so, Party on Wayne, Party on Garth. I do live with “Hybrid Battery Failure Anxiety (trademarked 2023)”. HBFA (trademarked 2023). It’s real but goes untreated and unrecognized by the medical community, thousands suffer needlessly. Even my emotional support guppy thinks it’s bullshot. How can a guppy have babies when it’s has decided not to be with other fish as a lifestyle choice…….. How did it get pregnant and have babies? I now have babies from a broken home and I guess I am their foster dad?😮🎉🎉

The only reason you'd want a 4Runner over a Highlander is because you actually intend to do light-moderate offroading/overlanding with it. Highlanders are also bulletproof vehicles. They're still incredibly capable onroad, getting you through snowy mountain ranges no problem, and they have markedly better gas milage (especially the hybrid option). Since they're not body on frame, yes they're not as capable, but they also have a smoother driving dynamic onroad. You shouldn't regret missing out on a great vehicle when you chose an also great vehicle.

Great SUVs, we have a ‘17. Our only qualm with it was the XREAS suspension system. Developed a leak at 70k miles, swapped out the shocks for Bilsteins and we’ve been happy ever since. We expect ours to be a lifelong vehicle for our family.

Our 4Runner is a pavement queen, so I wouldn't be able to speak to how it handles off road environments with the Bilsteins. I appreciate the peace of mind knowing that we have a good quality set of shocks. Hope this is helpful!

Yeah, I got rid on the XREAS on my 2011 when it was leaking at 150,000. Installed a OME (Old Man Emu) 2" lift and couldn't be happier. The 4Runner is an off-road beast now!

My daily driver is a 2000 4Runner that has been in our family coming up on 24 years since new. Going to turn over 250K miles soon. We drove it from KY out to CO in '21 and crawled all over the Alpine loop trail system in the San Juan mountains. It was unstoppable...amazingly capable vehicles. I plan on driving it until it dies or I die....whichever comes first....personally I'm betting on the 4Runner. The 4Runner is only built in one plant in Japan since the beginning and the knowledge base and experience base of the workers there is legendary...I think that is why they are so good.

Legendary vehicles! If I wanted an SUV, and could afford one, the 4Runner would be it. I hope the new generation coming will prove to be as reliable as this one. That 4.0L V6 and 5 speed automatic are crazy reliable. Toyota hasn't changed the 4Runner in many, many years, because it is so sorted. I heard that they have to ditch the 4.0L V6 now, because of CAFE numbers and emissions. Toyota doesn't like to change something unless they absolutely have to.

I've replaced the brakes myself....about to get the third set of tires (the factory ones were garbage)... Best rig I ever owned. Would a newer vehicle be nice? Sure...but why? Great rig. I plan on owning it until it dies or I die. Whichever happens first. Ha.

Grabbing a 2015 Limited 1 owner trade in next week. It’s in beautiful shape , sure it’s got 100k miles on it but that 4.0 L V6 is such a solid tank of an engine. I hope once my ex wife sees it she’ll return the useless Ford Bronco she just paid significantly more for in cash a month or so ago. That thing is going to be one problem after the next with useless tech and a crappy drivetrain. She would never had bought that lemon if I was around. We live in the northern Climate and a reliable Toyota with a proven engine is even with 100k miles will outlast that 🍋 Aw man.

I have a 99 4runner that has been driven extremely hard and its at 340k KMs (210k mi). Other than replacing ball joints, sway bar links, and u joints, has needed no repairs just maintenance. And doing those things were cheap and easy to do. My dads fiend has one over 600k KM (374K mi) and he doesn't even maintain it properly. Only replaced the spark plugs on one side because he didn't feel like removing the air intake. Still runs fine. These things are not only reliable, they'll handle abuse.

I have a an 01. I changed 5 out of 6 once bc one was hard to get to. Later I had a bad misfire and code for bad coil pack. These trucks only have three coils for six cylinders, and the coil that failed was responsible for both the plug underneath it and the plug I never changed on the opposite side of the engine. I always chalked up that failure to my laziness w that plug. Maybe TMI, hehe

I traded in my KIA Optima 2016 SXL for a 2022 4Runner SR5 Premium in November 2021…it’s the most satisfying decision I have made in my life. I haven’t look back at all the other cars I’ve owned because I’m really enjoying this truck! It seems like everyday I’m excited to get in my 4Runner and drive! I’ve upgraded my 4Runner in my 1st year of ownership, it’s perfect. I’m hoping it can get me to 300,000 miles or more with great reliability! Cheers!

Toyota used to offer these with a 5 speed stick until about 2003. If they still offered them with a manual I’d have a newer one in my garage right now. My stepbrother had a ‘92 4Runner, fully loaded with the 5 speed. Best SUV ever made. Not even close. Styling, performance, utility, reliability, the absolute best of all worlds.

Proud owner of a '22 Limited,same color.When the Gen 5's came out for 2010 it made my bucket list of a must have vehicle out of all the other competitors.Bad mpg's ,slow as molasses but I didn't care.Don't commute to work anymore,gas up once a week on Regular- good enough for me. Get service records if you can. Toyota's can die too if they haven't been maintained. Like any other car, lack of oil changes will kill it. Watch 'I Do Cars' for examples of engines that died early. Look for frame rust just like the trucks on the older ones. Gas mileage isn't the greatest because it is heavy. All in all>>good vehicle if cared for.

just retired My 05 tacoma same motor and probably 5 speed auto trans. I put 100k miles in a couple years, at 170k, only oil changes, tune up and I changed all other fluids, front brakes. that truck was amazing. now I'm rocking a gx460. very happy with Toyota. and because they are slow to change body style this clean 2015 looks like a 2022

I bought a ‘15 Trail Premium with 150k miles. It is in perfect condition and was never off-roaded and never towed anything. It has zero rust and zero leaks- not even seeping places! I plan to keep it forever and put about 5,000 miles on it traveling this year. I love the way it rides and how it looks. Thanks, Car Wizard, for affirming that I made a good choice! UPDATE: 14,500 miles in a year, 7,300 of those are road trip miles, and about 500 of those were on gravel, snowy mountain backroad, or off road totally. Amazingly comfortable, too. We love it!

I have an 01 runner, 210k miles. It looks and drives like it's new. Steel crank, steel block, real glass headlights, real metal bumpers, solid one piece steel frame construction, original ac, original transmission that still shifts like butter, not one rattle in the cab.. I fully expect to get 500k. My son has an 05 Tacoma with 275k, same thing. A friend of mine has an 05 Tacoma with 498k, and other than normal repairs; he has never done anything except change the oil.

We have a 2010 Highlander with 220,000 miles and follow the maintenance schedule, no issues. We recently test drove a new 4Runner, but because of the ride, bought a new 2022 Highlander with the V6…no turbos for us 😅

I own a 2005 4runner. Cleaned it yesterday......may put some wax on it today. Bought it new, and said at the time, "I'll keep it 20 years". Only 10 months to go. At dealership, I opened the driver's door to make sure it was made in Japan (why buy the product and not get the work ethic?). If you can't afford the price, don't buy till you can.....you won't regret it.

I took delivery of a 2023 4Runner LTD AWD similar to this one to replace my 2016 Tacoma last November. I really enjoy it and I'm averaging 19.1mpg at the pump over my first 3500 miles. Just need to be cautious on all 2010+ Limited or newer TRD Sport models with X-REAS suspension, it is expensive to fix if there is a leak but fortunately there is a bunch of more affordable aftermarket suspension kits.

If you go with suspension like Fox 2.5DC / Kings anything that gives good ride comforts they will leak. I bet those will leak before XREAS. Only difference is those suspension are rebuildable vs XREAS is not. But if XREAS leak its fully mechanical, you can replace all 4 corners with dirt cheap yet reliable stock Tokico suspension to expensive ELKA 2.5DC suspension / Kings / Fox /Dobinson / Ironman (list will go on and on) 😃😃

About 8 months ago I bought a used 2021 4runner in this exact spec. Coming from a F150 hybrid that was absolute junk, I'm glad you reaffirmed my decision. I'm enjoying this SUV much more than I thought I would.. Oh and don't forget how much the dogs enjoy the roll down rear window!

I agree with you Wizard. Putting the car on the lift sounds easy, but it's bloody hard work with all the bending and crawling around, and getting up and down to make sure the car is safely secured is no joke. We had a lazy mechanic at the shop where I worked that would just kick the lift's arms under the vehicle, and just lift it not caring where it pressed underneath. I hate mechanics like that.

I am on my 5th 4Runner, I will drive one from now on. I may never buy a model that goes hybrid but the current model is bulletproof. I have 35 inch tires and a very heavy load of off road bumpers, skids, winch, recovery gear and rooftop tent. My rig is re geared to 4:56 ratio and it’s awesome. For anyone that owns one, if you relocate your tire to a rear bumper fill the space underneath. I went for a few years with nothing there and then installed a custom water tank and it really helped fuel mileage. I guess the void caused turbulence that effected mileage? Who knew!

We have a 2018 4Runner. I wouldn’t say the engine is particularly powerful, seats are not really comfortable, fuel mileage not great, however this thing has older proven technology and has been very reliable. I wouldn’t hesitate taking it on a cross country trip towing our Casita travel trailer.

A California friend sold his 1999 4Runner (3rd Gen) with 438K miles - original transmission, transfer case and rear diff - for $7,000 in December 2021, when prices were crazy. Faded silver paint but no rust and a straight frame. I have a 2022 4Runner (5th Gen) TRD Off Road; it's my second 5th Gen. Put rock sliders for trips through logging trails. Myriad of after-market parts like winches, bumpers and light bars.

Just traded in a 2004 4Runner for a Rav4. My first repair was at 170,000 miles at 18 1/2 years old. The repair cost was about $1,000 dollars. Talk about reliable!

I recommended my friend Toyota 4Runner. He bought a 2021 SR5 at the dealer for about 37k. He asked me to test drive couple of SUVs let him know which ones are the best for him. I test drove Ford "cop car" explorer. My impression of that vehicle was that the transmission will go out in couple of years if you were to drive it hard. My Friend drives hard, so I said no to the vehicle. I test drove the Highlander which was pretty agile but it was only available in front wheel drive in California. When I test drove the 4runner, it had the best ride of all because it was body on frame. My friend purchased it and drove it for a year put on 37k miles and got rid of it and bought a Tesla Model Y which is a perfect vehicle for him because he likes to go fast. Model Y is fast AF. Sure model Y won't go on off roading but then the 4Runner was a reliable vehicle.... although he did not like that Toyota infotament system because it is slow AF.

I really liked this episode. The Toyota is Great, Very Very nice looking and it does hide behind the BWM, MERC or MASERATI, it is noticeable on the road passing by. Turns heads. Yes and ofcourse the durability is outstanding. It will not have the usual problems that the rest of the makes and models do. 70K miles, seemed like a breeze, not starting to get worn out to die, but rather broke in just yet. Fantastic.

I warned my sister and nephew, but they basically scoffed at me. One got an Acadia, the other got an Equinox, so much cheaper. We'll see if cheaper matters when they're sitting on the side of the road. Meanwhile in Toyota land my 07 Avalon looks and runs like new and other than regular maintenance, not a single problem.

Customer of ours has a 1997 4Runner with the 4cyl. Origional owner, transmission & engine. 371k miles & still going strong, just re-did the whole suspension on it. I have a 2014 4Runner & wouldn't trade it for anything. Toyota is simply the best.

I have a 2006 Toyota Prado with the same engine. I have nearly 300,000 kms on it. All I've ever done is change oil, brakes, engine chain. I do preventative maintenance on it. It still fires on 6 cylinders, hasn't felt like it's lost any power either. We take in the dunes here in Saudi even now. The 4WD system works like it's a new vehicle. Toyotas are forever.

We were looking at used 5th gen 4Runner's, but ended up with a Lexus GX460. The GX is similar in size, but has a V8 and a long list of standard features that we wanted (4wd, leather, 3rd row, etc.). Yes, we could have found these things on a 4Runner, but the used GX's go for about the same, if not less, than a comparably equipped (well, as closely equipped as you can get) 4Runner.
