13 quarts of oil that meets VW/Audi/Bentley/etc.'s specification and a good quality filter can easily cost $120-150 and then you're paying an experienced mechanic to do the job rather than some kid straight out of high school at a lube shop making $10/hr. Gotta pay to play, this isn't a Toyota Corolla!

@Stimpy&Ren They were A8 bearings. You don't pay more to have lower servicing costs. That's how trucks work - not luxury cars. Although I do wonder if a truck engine could go in a Bently or Rolls - with a small electric motor to smooth it out - it could be super reliable and long service intervals.

If you use sites like rockauto, they'll have some non oe parts that are priced as low as possible and they have wide ranges of OE replacements like Meyle or TRW for example. These companies do supply VW group but the parts are just cheaper because it doesnt say VW or Audi or something on it.

@@Random-nf7qb It's more difficult to find those brands here because the majority suppliers in the US are companies like ACDelco (GM) Motorcraft (Ford) and Mopar(FCA) and a lot of the other suppliers like Denso are also big here because of Toyota, but most European car owners don't know of these brands or trust them I believe, personally I do use brands like lemforder, Bilstein, and meyle on my cars but the parts are not only more difficult to find, very few people outside of Euro focused shops know of these brands

Nice car. :-) When I start my plane's engine I have *thirty* seconds for oil pressure to register before I have a problem. Being airplane parts the oil and filter are much more expensive than similar car parts. Being a 1950s design (Lycoming O-320) the oil consumption is significant - I buy oil by the case. Like driving a fancy car, if you can't afford to look after a plane you can't afford it at all.

Couple of points: Zinc is awesome additive for oil, but it will contaminate and shorten the life of a very expensive bently catalytic converter. you never mention the relationship between the W12 & the VW VR6. if you where a mental case you could fill the oil filter 7/8ths up, then use thick grease in the holes at the bottom of the filter to temporarily stop the oil from coming out, then screw the filter on real fast.

You have the typical straightforward approach to the customer price question. Why so much? I would answer, "How many quarts of oil does the manufacturer require?" "Which is recommended?" "Which filter does it require?" "What is the manufacturers' lifting protocol?" "Do you know how to lift the hood?" You are asking about a unique machine with each step being unique and unfamiliar to anyone who has never seen one. The car must be, not should, must be lifted and inspected, which I will also do. Your car will be better off with me because I will give it appropriate respect and service.

Interesting to see that the power output is scaling pretty much linear. One of those VR6 makes about 250hp naturally aspirated (at least the one in my 2004 Audi A3 3.2 does, the ones in the R32 Golfs may have had different specs) and the two bolted together here result in 630hp, but they aren't naturally aspirated. I would have expected more loss of efficiency from the setup. Or maybe I'm underestimating the increase in power forced induction on a >6l 12 cylinder should produce?
@zloychechen5150
@zloychechen5150 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBigOne0305 if i recall well, the w12 in the A8 from those years puts out 450 hp. add some forced induction, and you have... whatever you want) it's pretty logical that if you add some more cylinders with corresponding displacement increase, you get that much power, it's the fuel economy that suffers, because friction and shit.

The Aston Martin V12 is just 2 Ford Taurus engines (Duratec 30) stuck together with some Cosworth magic breathed into them. The early ones were in the 400 HP range, roughly double a Taurus as well. The Gallardo's V10 is 2 inline 5s from a base model Jetta, again with a little extra work done.
@efabiano82
@efabiano82 4 жыл бұрын
This is a dumb analogy, as you could literally say any engine is just a smaller engine doubled. Doesn't mean shit if it's not engineered properly. It's a silly reductionist argument. Well a Bugatti is just 4 Jetta engines, I'm pretty sure there is a little more to it than some piece of shit Jetta motor times four.

There's a really good book, "The Toyota Way" by Jeffrey Liker that delves into the origins of how Toyota do things. Some of it's barely believable, the lengths they'll go to to get suppliers working well. The other thing one realises from reading the book is that it's all very meta at Toyota. Their secret isn't just that they know how to do JIT or Quality properly. It's not just that they know how to train people to do them properly. It's not really even that they know how to train those trainers. But it is the next training level up from that. That, plus they'll take their own sweet time making their minds up over new stuff. We're seeing some of that play out right now. Toyota used to be an investor in Tesla, but got fed up of Musk and walked away. A fair question now is, "Where is Toyota's electric vehicle?". Well, it's on its way, and they've been working very hard on solid state lithium ion battery electrolytes. The result (according to their press release) is 5 minute charging time, deep cycle (so more energy), no wear life problems, full regen braking energy recovery (because the battery can absorb it all). This will be coming to Toyotas near us all in a couple of years or so. This will make electric cars "normal"; normal to refill (no need to wait around for 30 minutes), normal expectations as to how long big bits of the car will last (so good resale value), more efficient than other electric cars, and more range. Oh, and they'll likely never, ever break down and cost half the price. If they're not very careful, Tesla are going to be stuck making cars with The Wrong Battery Technology.

And there are places where they mostly do oil changes, but they'll sell you mobil1 or shell from a barrel, but i don't need that in my volvo, i can get russian-made stuff in a shop, which is seemingly as good, and has the same tolerances, but 30% cheaper.
