I just retired my red '90 Civic Si 5spd, this car's twin. At 320,000 miles the engine needed work (burning oil) and the rust was worse than your customer car (though it hadn't reached any critical suspension mounting points) so I passed it on to the cousin of a coworker who loves fixing and modding these. But the car still runs and has the original starter, alternator, shocks, ball joints (I did do tie rod ends). I replaced the transmission bearings at 165,000 miles (It had been running the factory recommended 10w30 motor oil - I recommend Redline MTL for better protection). Did the head gasket (and valve seals) at 280,000. Oh, it still has the original brake master cylinder and calipers (I may have done a rear wheel cylinder). I did add a relay to the headlight low beam circuit to reduce the load on the headlight switch contacts (they were beginning to wear). The rear trailing arm bushings were cracking but it still drove beautifully. This was really "peak Honda" in quality and a really fun/cool car to drive.

I do mechanic work on the side and one of my regular customers has a 1990 Civic wagon. We've just replaced the ECM when the vehicle would crank momentarily but not start. Starting fluid would keep the engine going, but it would stop the moment you stopped the spray. This was hands down one of the most frustrating diagnostics I've done. Luckily the test sheets are easy enough to find online. But still, fuel pump, the two injectors (my guy's is the TBI version), the main relay, and the wiring harness test sheets all passed. Even the ECM flashed up codes 15 and 16. But I did notice signs of water leaking in after recent heavy rain and when I saw moisture on the wires going into the ECM, it was like blood to a shark. The good news is, those ECMs don't require programming and I was able to get a used one with matching part number for like $40 that fixed the issue. No other parts got replaced except the fuel filter that's visibly new on the patient vehicle in the video.

I work on 80's and 90's cars every day. The main issue i see now is poor earths. Use a Multimeter to check resistance between battery Negative and a clean spot of alloy on the inlet manifold. Should be zero ohms. You will likely see 3 or even 7 ohhms. Which means bad earthing. This means the ECU is reading incorrect values from the sensor and so it throws a code. When the sensor is just fine. Another issue is failed Capacitors in the ECU where they are 20+ years old. So i do lots of ecu repairs now. But you have to be quick as the Electrolyte from the leaking capacitors can destroy the circuit board if left.

Unless my info is wrong, Honda indeed did sell these -- and the Integras of the era -- at a loss on purpose, to build a base of lifelong fanboys. It appears to have worked. Our cars are the, "Costco rotisserie chickens," of the car world. My best friend is a mechanic, and while under my car one time, I kept hearing him say, "Holy sh*t!" every so often. "What's wrong?" "Nothing," he said, coming out from under the car with a part in his hand, "Look at this part! It's waaaaay better quality than it needs to be! And it's buried down in there where nobody was every gonna see it! Honda made sure they did everything on this car, 11 out of 10!" I had a '91 civic DX four-door sedan and was very happy for the 21 years I had it. I made a concerted effort to buy a new car in 1991, first chose to consider American sedans. The Chevy, Olds, Buick, and Ford sedans all seemed lacking in comfort, headroom, handling/performance, along with fit and finish, and all around visibility from the driver's seat. Even the Toyota Corolla sedan I test drove had quality issues about it. Ah! But the '91 Civic I test drove filled the bill with the issues I had for buying a new vehicle: - Seat comfort - Fit and finish - Headroom - Acceptable handling and performance. - All around visibility from the driver's seat was satisfactory. Five downsides of the '91 Civic: - Front disc brakes didn't hold up well, and I'm not an aggressive driver. - The annual expense for tuneups and engine valve adjustments. - The rubber CV boot had a propensity to deteriorate due to its location near the exhaust pipe. - The breaking of the upper motor mount, having three replaced in the car's 235K miles life. - The failure of newly installed AC units (two) that were equipped to handle the environmentally friendly refrigerant. Two aspects that surprised me: - The front MacPherson struts never needed replacing. Up to that time, I was familiar with previous vehicle's shock absorbers needing replacement after so many miles of driving. When I asked the Menlo Honda service department about when the struts needed replacement, I was told they're no replacement schedule for the struts . . . that unless they failed, they should last the life of the vehicle. *I was stunned by that answer!* Mind you, this was happening in the 1990s, where there were no online info sources to turn to for corroboration; I had to take the service department rep at his word for that. That dealership lost hundreds of dollars of business that I was willing to pay for to do the struts replacement. - The strength of the chassis and bodywork, as a rear collision knocked-off the rear bumper. The rear body work was a bit crumpled, but new tail lights and re-attaching the rear bumper were easily done; with the integrity of the chassis unchanged.

My wife and I bought a new Accord sedan and wagon back in 1994. Each was 5 speed in EX trim, which was the only trim grade that got you the vtec and sunroof. One black and one white. We called them Ebony and Ivory. Super reliable and easy to work on. Kept them 15 and 17 years respectively. Bought and installed after-market leather kits for each and iPod compatible radios. Otherwise they just required maintenance, brake and clutch master cylinders, fuel senders and a starter. And yes, I flushed the brake fluid every five years.

My wife and I really wanted his and her Preludes back then, either 91 or 92. Was just too expensive though so we stuck with the cars we already had. We were only 23 and newlyweds.

ECU solder joints failing after many years can lead to many problems. I fixed an 88 BMW and 87 911 that had intermittent issues by reflowing a few solder joints on the ECUs

Never thought I’d see one of these on here because they are so easy to work on. They do get really expensive to keep on the road when you let maintenance back up tho

Lots of nostalgia for me here. I owned a 91 Civic LX, 5 speed, in same color, that I bought in 1993 with 36K. It was fun as hell. Coming from larger cars I tought of it a go cart. The Si was the hot model with 1.6L, sunroof and better seats if I remenber correctly. I kept it till 2000 arter putting a ton of miles on it and sold to coworker for 1k. Is that a Renault Fuego in the background? A buddy of mine bought one new in same color and also with folding top for 7K, I was a total POS form new. he sold it after a year

I had a 91 CRX Si with the imported Vtec engine. It was a crazy fun car and rather easy to work on. It had electrical problems, then the ECU burnt out. It was just a tank of gas away from 300K miles. I did not want to diagnose the electrical issues so I sold it off.

1994 Honda Prelude owner here, I can certainly attest that the computer modules can develop bad solder joints at that age. Had to strip and reflow the joints on my 4 Wheel steering module when it had an intermittent issue. The give away was it was Weather dependent, It became more/Less prominent as the temperature changed.

had the same issue with oil drain plug on mine. I used oem washers and torqued to spec. I had to buy some larger gasketed washer to stop it.

I had an 89 CRX a few years back and first thing I did was put the stock tail lights back on. Had this same style except it was filled with water and ugly. Besides that the car was stock. Solid body and motor. Drove it as a daily for a long long time. I also put a set of 15" subs in it and REALLY shaked some bolts loose. Then tightened them again. Was super funny to have all that sound in such a tiny car. Miss it

I have a 91 Si as well. Its insanely much better shape than this one, but still not perfect. I mainly use it for autocross racing, and it's quite good. Its a fun little car to drive. I've put more into it than it's worth, but I have no plans on selling it!

Add a couple ground wires from the body to the engine. The OEM wire was never good enough. The owner will enjoy brighter headlights and it might take care of the O2.

Remember a 1979 Prelude it was a great car with over 700,000 miles an all-stock motor & trans that still runs today with No rust damage. that car looks like there are major rust issues. Is it better to start with a better body?

Buddy of mine got my addiction to 2nd gen. RX-7's when I let him drive mine and made him shift at redline. His became even worse. We once slid into a curb due to ice. Car never wanted to start after that. After bypassing the starter wire it was good. MANY years later, when swapping a harness, we found the clutch safety switch pin had MOVED out of the plug and wasn't connected anymore even though the plug was. Weird things happen. Always good to have a second set of eyes look at it.

Stalling could be caused by some common failure points on that generation civic. The three worth investigating are the ignition coil, igniter, and also the main fuel relay can be intermittent. Just wanted to help with a heads up, I specialize on these cars

I can certainly appreciate a car that can keep running good enough to be useful till after the body is rusting away, a bit like having an old 8GB hard drive in your computer still running, things that outlive their practical usefulness are indeed great, the opposite of planned obsolescence really

I bought one just like that one in 1998. It had been stolen, the aftermarket wheels and seats had to be replaced so the insurance company totaled it. A garage builder replaced everything and sold it to me below market because of the branded title. It was a great commute car. Zippy and great gas mileage. I drove it for several years racking up 100,000 miles without anything other than routine maintenance, until I changed jobs and also needed an SUV to haul a boat. Years later I looked for a similar car, but sadly nothing came close. To this day it was the most dependable car I have ever owned.

I'm really amazed at how good a shape the body is in, especially compared with those rockers. Hardly any anywhere else, but the rockers are rotted like the car was from the rust belt. It will need some extensive work in that area, but once that's done, she's a great candidate to save.
