This is a great project. I'm not a fan of EVs, but when affordable EVs, start to get decent range, they become a more desirable proposition. I think the next test should be to see how far the car goes in a more realistic drive. So: a bit faster overall, a few more hazards to make you brake unexpectedly, a few slow vehicles that you have to overtake, music on, air-con/heater on. Then see if you can get 700-800km out it. We know that driving the AMG like what I'm suggesting, you would be lucky to get 300!
@timothyhingham36722 жыл бұрын
It is interesting to see the techniques used. I'm doing similar things these days when not in a rush regarding coasting out of gear driving smooth and slower. My MPG is about 50% better than when driving aggressively. It's an impressive difference.
@psircos2 жыл бұрын
@@timothyhingham3672 Timothy, you're not meant to coast out of gear. Put it in 6th and let it roll. Let it roll in gear up to traffic lights, putting the clutch in at the last moment. When you're coasting in neutral, the injectors are required to spray petrol to keep the engine alive. In gear coasting, uses the momentum of the car to turn the engine over, and keep it alive..... uses little to no petrol. Try it and you'll see! When you get good at it, you'll be surprised how efficient you can be, even in town/traffic.

@@soerenbo I think you missed my point slightly. Were I to try to explain that to my mother who is non-technical, (also not a dog), the theory of propagation of radio signals, she would listen intently, then ask if I'd like a cup of tea. Regardless of the level of simplification, to someone who will has only a simple understanding it will never sink in. I went to a talk on the 'Arduino' this evening, but glazed-over during the demonstration of writing a C++ compiler to flash a set of lights. (very early). I simply did not have enough background to understand the whys and wherefores of writing in programming language. When taken to production the car won't use 3d printing unless they plan to only make a small amount, it will also be very expensive. If they want to make more they will make it more conventional which will make it heavier and less efficient. This will also be the case if they want more power.

@@youngspen I agree with your centement but 3D printing cannot make or do better quality parts than "conventional" methods. 3D printing is in my opinion how you cheaply make the very first one, the prototype, then you get the rest made by mould or machined out of better materials by better methods. 3D printing is a very good way to make something that is low volume or bespoke as long as you can make it sturdy enough for the job. So in that respect I agree.
@youngspen2 жыл бұрын
@@bigduphusaj162 I agree, but it depends on the requirements, If they can use 3d printing to also account for safety then you can make a car better than conventional means, look at the safety of formula 1 they use alot of custom 3 d parts. However this will have a negative effect due to cost, time and manufacturing, the line is not set up to work with 3d printing. It depends on cost which will be reflected in the purchase price. Therefore they will go conventional and efficiency will be similar to Tesla for twice the price.
@bigduphusaj1622 жыл бұрын
@@youngspen yeh but that's like I'm saying its for F1 so think about it, the criteria is likely this> Keep a spare of everything but make a new one when we use one. Can we make a new one quickly on site and make adjustments on the design quickly incase we need to correct something or if we need to make modifications to suit. How close to the action can we do this and what levels of success rate are we getting reliability wise if we've done our maths right and all the stresses it wil etc are well calculated. You best believe that if they had to print out a part on the spot that turned out to work good in the race, they would then make it back at base by the best method available and it wouldn't be a printer. For stuff like F1 intakes and the likes then yeah 3D printing is capable of doing that for fun and that's your final product as long as its a part known for not throwing up issues if its not built perfectly. You won't beat machining bare material blocks though, if you can then you haven't got the best machines, it's that simple.

Hey Mat, unrelated to this video but it was an idea that popped up in my mind A cool video would be a drag comparison against 3 cars completely identical except for the gearbox, like one has manual, one has a regular automatic and one has dct, to show "once and for all" how much the gearbox does actually impact the car performance Hope this video wasn't made before, anyway really enjoy your content, have a good one

Good to see a concept car being developed this way, in a real world application of efficiency and range. It's more what most people drive every day and consider when purchasing a car.
@metoo39182 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is 200 miles is more than what most people drive every day, yet a 250mile range EV scares them. Unless you do routine long drives, anything over 250 is fine.
@focus5502 жыл бұрын
@@metoo3918 i agree and disagree. Whilst it's enough to do what most people need, it's the recharging which is the cause of anxiety. Firstly, where is the nearest charge port, and then the time constraint of it. Unless you frequent shops or areas which have EV charging facilities, you will have to go out your way for at least an hour. Most people do not have this free time on a daily/bi weekly basis to support the life of an EV with the current restriction.

I think it looks so much better than the ”EQUS” or whatever its called on sale now. Also very interesting in that its the polar opposite to SUV’s. It has a small frontal area - this is the way forward.

I do not see what so special about all these numbers or them being at the top of EV? The single piece 3D printed, Tesla doing it in Mass production with casting on their new Model Y design but not just the back but ALSO the front. Doing it with 3d printer is going to cost A LOT. Even Volvo and other brands are doing single castings soon. The battery pack is also noting special. It weight 495kg for 100Kwh, Tesla does 294kg for 81Kwh with their 4680 cell pack. A 100Kwh Tesla pack would weight 362kg, 133kg lighter. It still heavier then the Tesla Model S pack from 7 years ago for the same Kwh... You forget that this car can only go 140kph for a German brand(does not work well in Germany to begin with) and It probably will cost well above 70k.

How does the regenerative breaking affect rust on the brakes? This seems to be a problem even with EVs with less RB than this Mercedes
@stijnhs2 жыл бұрын
Not really, as long as you sometimes engage friction brakes it's perfectly fine.
@emrefifty52812 жыл бұрын
normal brakes will start to rust if you don’t drive for a week or two as well. In Germany we call it „Flugrost“ or flying rust .You need to use the real brakes once in a while to get it off
@darrenkavanagh56102 жыл бұрын
Didnt he say that the brakes were aluminium?
@pipooh12 жыл бұрын
Think it should be easy enough for the car periodically(every x km driven, or x time has passed) use the brakes instead of regen to remove rust.
