I’m a truck driver myself I can honestly say the FH16 is mind blowing. I took 1 down to Italy a few years ago fully loaded and I cannot explain what it’s like to have that kind of weight on and climb a mountain without slowing down! My regular truck is 500bhp and it struggles on big hills when it’s at max weight. When you start a hill climb in the FH16 and expect it to start slowing down but it just keeps on going that’s a surreal feeling that’s where you realise you’ve got serious power underneath you 😂😂

The cool thing about cabovers is you ALWAYS find whatever you dropped in the cab when you do your daily pre-drive checks! Most of the time it's right there on the windshield making it easy to grab and some of the time it's arranged in a pile in front of the truck on the ground amongst what used to be your windshield. I could SWEAR I strapped that microwave down....

8:17 This is called a "jake brake", and it works by reducing the exhaust flow. The net effect is that pistons have a harder time pushing the exhaust fumes out, thus are slowed down, and this is what provides engine braking. Its primary use is to save brake pads and discs, not fuel, although when you use a jake brake, the fuel injection will also be cut off. So yes, there will be _some_ fuel savings, but the brakes are actually the main benefactors here.
@HrLBolle

On volvo is it "engine rake"
@lukelanam6045
@lukelanam6045 2 жыл бұрын
Actually a Jake brake functions by first shutting off the injectors and then as the pistons come up on the compression stroke the "Jake housings" located on top of the valvetrain open the exhaust valves releasing the compressed air. This slows the truck and engine down by making it work against the compression without injecting any fuel to supply more energy to the engine.
@ottohoel5150
@ottohoel5150 2 жыл бұрын
It is called an Exhaust brake or an Engine brake. "Jake Brake" is a brand name. It is a superior product to all others and as such has almost a monopoly in the US market. However, it is still a brand name.

Exactly, just as you said, Electric truck (or a van) will be better for "local" distribution. A diesel will be better for long haul. The same thing applies to cars - the ICE cars bans in Europe make no real sense. Lots of company cars are used for "long haul", and company cars are the majority of new car sales.

The only thing holding back EVs is the lack of charging infrastructure. Routinely get 500km from a full charge and can charge up to about 80% from 10% in 10mins with the right chargers. Dependable charging is still probably 10 years away.

Company cars driving long distance EVs do fantastically well too. There’s good charging infrastructure on the main road networks, so you just drive and charge at a service station, and the tax savings are so good, and fuel savings so good, you save lots of money.

I'm fairly sure the engine brake is for slowing down on a continuous downward slope to help maintain a lower speed and not cook the brakes, causing a horrific accident.
@AdmiralDantheman
@AdmiralDantheman 2 жыл бұрын
It can be, but the engine brake shuts off the engine and stops fuel going in therefore is more economical. Also it saves brake wear and tyre ware from harsh braking. Especially in the UK brakes over heating isn't really an issue for the most part and you have to remember going downhill using the engine brake you're only braking 2 wheels of the unit which can cause you to slide more easily and jackknife so it's best to use the engine brake with some brake so the trailer wheels are also slowing

Volvo offer a 750bhp i6 16L which is what you were in but they also offer a 540bhp i6 13L (fh13) which is the highest output engine you can spec with a dual clutch gearbox, that 540 will actually beat the 750 to 50mph from a standstill. Also that might be the most powerful electric hgv in production however back in the diesel regime scania offer a 770bhp 16L v8. There’s actually the possibility to push the engines a lot further if it wasn’t for cooling. Just like CAT engines there’s respective higher output marine versions of some models, where obviously cooling isn’t an issue with the room a available on boats.

Hey there, Just saying Scania has a 770hp V8 truck with 3,700NM of torque :) and I-shift is slower then Opticruise - making Scania the winner (at least for now) Scania and Volvo are constantly fighting over the title for the brand that manufacture the strongest truck :) 19:20 and next time switch the gearbox to power mode, the E on the left bottom side indicates that you were on eco :)

So could someone work out how many weeks it would take the electric truck to cover the 1100 mile range of the diesel?
@immDroidz
@immDroidz 2 жыл бұрын
1100 / 200 = 5.5 5.5 x 2 = 11 Driving that distance you would have to spend a total of 11 hours at the charger + whatever time it would take to do the actual driving. I cant see how a reputable truck manufacturer would ever make a semi-truck with those specs, it makes no sense whatsoever. It could work for a distrubution truck or postal service, but not as a semi as those are pretty much only ever used for long-range delivery.

Trucks may not be as exciting as cars for obvious reasons but they command (and deservedly so) massive respect for the (automotive/mechanical) engineering challenge and marvel (if I may say so) that they are. Not to mention the value they add and how indispensable they are to society. Very cool and thankful to have Martin from Volvo. He did speak. He wasn't 'silent' by any stretch of the imagination but I still would have liked to hear more from him. Anyway, Great video.

Almost didn't watch this. Would've been sorry! It was really good. Thanks, Mat. In a few short years, the battery tech will make this work better than the best today. Higher energy density and capacity, much quicker charging, not volatile, lighter, cheaper, 100% recyclable. Applications like these should've been focused on first! It makes perfect sense, specially because of the flat torque delivery. Some day, no more trucking chains in the far-right-hand lane in the mountains!

Highly appreciate the quality content you are creating throughout this episode. But, what I have quite noticed and at the same time feel sorry for that whenever Mr. Matthew reviews such type of a vehicle he never gets informed about the practice of how to appropriately climb outside of it which is quite an essential piece of knowledge to be acquired.

it's not for longer distances it's for shorter daily drives and city transports. + europ has strickt laws on how long you can drive and when you need to take a brake. you have 4,5hours of drive time before you need to take a 45min brake (or you can split it and take a 15min brake during those 4,5hours and then only need 30min when you hit 4,5h) then you get another 4,5hours. you can get 1hour extra drive time if needed i belive 2x per week or something like that. but then you still need that 45min brake after 4,5h before you can do the last 1hour. like 9/10 times i have seen sleeper cabs they are just sleeper because why not. they rarely actually get used as such unless we talking the bigger FH which is used for longer distance transports. here in sweden it's up to 74tons and 25meters long. we also got trucks with special permits that do 100ton hauls of logs. road train in other words

its supposed to be a short distance delivery vehicle. in europe we daily drive trucks arround 800km a day or 500 miles. and they usually carry bigger fuel tanks. like a weeks worth of fuel. arround 1250liters normaly wich would usually get you over 2000miles or 3200km on a full load
