These things are very popular among rich people in Asia over luxury SUV's or sedans. The reason is obvious. These sort of cars are more for big Asian cities where the roads are flat, you deal with jams, and it goes from building lobbies to lobbies. Not so much for back roads and European countryside's or cross continental drives. It's main use is for business. The key difference why these cars are eroding the sales of S Class or 7 series is the way you walk into the car and walk out. Much easier and more dignified. As an Asian I cannot emphasise enough how much we hate diesel engines. The rattling sound automatically links to a cheap car in Asian mind (something like a Ford transit). With a lot of underground carparks in Asia, the "cheap" engine noise will be heard from a long way, which you definitely don't want. First class seats with a transit noise just doesn't add up in our mind.
@SDav219 ай бұрын
@@Horace20101 Actually you don't hear that rattling sound on 6 or 8 cylinder diesels. Have you heard the new Mazda CX60's inline 6 3.3 litre diesel? It's so smooth and refined. 6 cylinder diesels sound amazing. 4 cylinder diesels are rattly but I like it sometimes because it sounds strong. Also, for me, the droning sound of a hybrid when it accelerates feels less like luxury and sounds more cheap to me. But I think a 6 cylinder diesel would do wonder here. And Toyota's 2.0 d4d in the previous Gen corolla was so nice and quiet even the 2.2 d4d in the Rav4. It would've suited this car so well because it has the torque to pull it. I absolutely love diesels especially the new modern ones. So much torque, great for towing, light on fuel and they sound strong.

To think that the LM started off from the JDM-only alphard, but I suppose Toyota internationalized the Alphard as there were too many grey-exports. The LM is the next logical move after seeing the Alphard take off in China. BTW, Alphards absolutely rule in Japan, probably as hire cars. I didn't see a single modern Elgrand at all.

I agree, the Elgrand engine is excellent, but the Alphard's is more powerful and quieter, and it uses much less fuel. Japanese written with Google Translate.

You didn’t mention why the rear mirror has the camera view mode. I’m guessing when the passenger closes the glass divider and makes it opaque?

I now live in Septic land, and because we have a family of 5 and growing, our "family" car has been a Sienna (which I know you can't get back home). We have the top trim, but it has always lacked that *something*. To someone who has driven the Sienna almost exclusively whilst being in the States, honestly, I am surprised it has taken Toyota this long to launch this. Unfortunately, it will probably take about 2-300k miles more on my Sienna until I can justify and upgrade to this. These things are literally indestructible (I had my FIL's Sienna from the 90's that had 350k miles on it and it just wouldn't die). Well done, Toyota, looks like I will be staying with you.

Hi Mat, this car had the clean air “nano-function” as you mentioned. Even my humble T-Roc has an air filtration option with coil filter. Can you ever test these systems?? I always wonder if it really works, and if it does, how much it really helps in a polluted city.

I love that Matt complains about the size of the glove box. How many gloves does he need at one time? It's really generous of Toyota to not compete in the large van market. I've seen people convert panel Vans into RVs, for not much money. I think to myself, how great one would be if it had the reliability and fuel economy of the Toyota hybrid.

It's not based on the RX, it's an evolution of the Toyota Alphard. We have both, and they're completely different - it would be impossible to fit the RX chassis under the Alphard. The only similarity between the RX and the (JDM) Alphard is the wonderful 3.5-litre V6 engine, which drives brilliantly, even as front-wheel-drive. JDM cars are a bargain, and you can even get this seat configuration - it's called the "Royal Lounge". Highly recommended!
