Disagree. They looked better as they got facelifted over the years. And as far as it being special, if that was the case then it wouldn't be the cheapest one. The original R8 literally has the same horsepower as the BMW M3 did during those same years, except Audi charged way more for the R8. It wasn't anything revolutionary. Just a small displacement V8 sports car sold and marketed as a "super car" when it really wasn't.

The R8 Gen 1 is an absolute bargain. Dry sumped V10, mid engine with an incredible chassis. How it is worth a fraction of a high-production, 240 hp mid-1980s 911 is a total mystery.

I love the fact that so many people still think of depreciation is this super bad thing when it comes to cars, gives me the ability to take advantage of it with less competition. I'm no rich guy so to me, depreciation is my absolute best friend. Yeah the manual R8 V8 that I also have came last in the drag races, but I feel so blessed to be able to even have skin in the race on a video like this.

Road Tax is £735 this year and for insurance, your mileage will vary but I was shocked at mine. Admittedly I'm 35, no points on license, parking on a driveway with no claims and multi car discount but the R8 was only £950 for the year! Mat isn't wrong when it comes to the repair costs. General rule of thumb is around £1k (parts & labour) for any small mechanical issue and it goes up from there. Of course that isn't the full story. Apart from a few common issues, R8s are actually pretty damn reliable. My advise is research research research. Find out the common problems and how to spot them. When buying, use that knowledge to walk away from bad deals/negotiate the price down. During the over 1.5 years of ownership (and 6K miles) I've spent £1730 for an MOT/major service/seized hand brake and then £1230 for a Valve Control Box replacement for my aftermarket exhaust (not even really counting that as not OEM). REPerformance (THE go to mechanics for R8s) have gone top to bottom and found mine (barring that hand brake) to be in mint condition so I expect to not have to shell out for much at all in the coming years. I get it, it's all relative. Compare R8 costs to say a Punto, it will 100% feel like supercar levels. Get yourself a good specimen and then compare it to Ferrari/Lambo, it's actually pretty damn reasonable, maybe even cheap.

Yianni’s R8 has a 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch, not the R-tronic. Very evident by his shifts as well. The 1.2 R8 from 2014 onward was dual.

The 2014/2015 facelift gen1 came with a S-tronic dual clutch auto transmission. I have a 2014 V8 Spyder and even that is dual clutch. I would have loved to see a gen1 v8 s-tronic dual clutch trans car be up in the mix and see how it hangs with Yanni and Matt’s car.

Yianni and Rory didn't have the same gearbox as Matt says. All pre facelift mk1 R8's have the robotised manual or a gated 6. The facelift mk1's got the dual clutch unit same as the Huracan and the Gen 2 R8

The original Audi R8 was my dream car at 17. Now that I'm 32, it feels like the end of an era. The R8 served us well.
