I was asked to share my videos of driving using FSD during my holiday in America so I've created this short video (4 minutes) with 3 different drives:
1) Through a construction zone (0:05)
2) Through a suburb with no lane markings (1:44)
3) Making a U-turn (3:17)
FSD Beta honestly performed better than I anticipated. I didn't intervene at any point in any of the drives I videoed. I selected a destination on the navigation system and then activated FSD. The car drove from wherever I was stopped (you can also engage it while already in motion), picked a route, set the speed, selected the lane, made every turn, navigated every stoplight/yield/stop sign, interacted with other traffic ... all in an incredibly human-like manner. As a passenger it would be very hard to guess what was the driver and what was FSD.
Once I got more familiar with the way FSD drove, I would sometimes encourage it to move by pressing the accelerator when it was still deciding if the path was clear (I believe newer releases are more confident). Twice I intervened to avoid a dangerous situation. Once I intervened to avoid a pothole (FSD doesn't see those).
I've owned a 2020 Tesla Model 3 SR+ since early 2020. I purchased FSD but I live in Australia so, as of now (July 2024) I still haven't had access to any of the more "self driving" features. With no timeline for delivery to Australia (government regulations and blah blah blah) it's been frustrating but I still believe one day my car will chauffeur me around.
If I was told "this is as good as it gets" and Tesla can't make any improvements, I'd still pay for FSD, use it all the time, and be a very happy M3 owner. But I know it will get better. And I'll be patient as the global regulators get their head around this technology while watching the fantastic things Tesla is doing in the US.
This video was filmed from the back seat of a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus. Software: v12 (2024.20.6.2) Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software: v12.3.6.
