Whilst you can join straight on the base leg, it's not standard procedure. You should always consider joining upwind, mid field crosswind or downwind at 45 deg angle. Good lesson in the radios too! I always do a squelch check when changing radios or about to broadcast for the first time to make sure I'm at least getting feedback that I'm listening. A really important point to consider is Helicopter Landing Sights too! HLS are marked on the VFR maps clearly with the H. You should be listening out and broadcasting in the vicinity of these too. I have almost been in a situation of VFR separation breakdown because a light fixed wing aircraft flew directly over my marked HLS without making any radio calls and probably not even on the correct frequency of 126.7 MHz. I rejected my takeoff because thankfully my ACAS alert went off and I waited until I saw the aircraft! Please CASA, can you do a crash comic on that topic?
