Watch 'Blue Planet: The Fascinating World Beneath the Waves' here: • Blue Planet: The Fasci...
Olympic National Park was founded in 1938 and is located in the western part of the US state of Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. Since 1976 the national park has also been designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. In 1981 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Since the national park is located on a remote peninsula, some animal and plant species have developed here that can only be found here in the park. For this reason, the park is a popular research area for biologists and zoologists.
The national park consists of two separate parts. The coastline is very rugged and often shrouded in fog. Inland, the forest connects directly to the beaches, which often leads to fallen tree trunks lying across the beach. The core area of the park is the mountainous region around the Olympic Mountains, which is covered by many ancient glaciers. To the west of it are temperate rainforest up to the park boundary, here lies the wettest point in the contiguous United States.

I’ve been there and it is the epitome of what one imagines the Pacific Northwest to be. Truly magical in a very rugged, craggy sort of way. I appreciate these documentaries,I have watched many but when you had cascadia in the title, man this really brought back memories,I was born in Seattle,WA,..and when my parents divorced,My father moved to the Olympic peninsula,He worked for the Department of transportation, and I would go with him early in the morning to plow the roads in winter during heavy snow we would travel allow over the peninsula from Forks to sequim,..all the way up to hurricane ridge,...he really loved it there and took my sister and I all over that amazing corner of our country, brings back memories,I sure do miss Him... thanks...

I am from Chicagoland and live in Nashville, TN now. My aunt lived in Sequim for some time and my sister and I visited her, and we also spent a full day at Olympic National Park and one full day at Mt. Rainier on our Sister Seattle Spree, which is what we named our vacation. We didn't make it to Cascades National Park, nor Mt. St. Helens, although we did go to the first two San Juan islands (the ones accessible by car) and to Mt. Washington (I think that is what it is called, 4 mile gravel road on the Olympic peninsula), as well as seeing the sites in Seattle and Tacoma.

One thing I’d say when visiting is to count on rain even in summer. Hiking with a hood on can be stifling and make it more difficult to take it in. Hence why there is the hat called the Seattle Sombrero. Something like that and/or a good quality backcountry umbrella (not for high winds that you can get at elevation) can greatly enhance your enjoyment when it is raining.
