There will only be help from your Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which will not include water, food or meds. Everyone should have at least one month of extra food, water, meds, some form of heat and light….. The problem won’t be FEMA, it will be the lack of access on major roads due to the down over-passes causing concrete debris. There will be no emergency vehicles. If one can get to a hospital they will most likely be set up with a triage system beginning outside. It will suck for a while. Helicopters may drop some supplies but again, one should not count on any help, at all. People will have to fend for themselves meaning that those who don’t have will try to take from those who do. It could be ugly, it could bring people together. Every neighborhood should have a team that knows how to deal with the immediate aftermath. Taking the FEMA CERT course ahead of time is the best thing one can do for their survival, especially if they have kids.✌️

Every year, the magnitude of the earthquake in 1965 in Seattle is downgraded to a lower magnitude. At the time, it was over an eight maybe 8.2. Then it dropped down to a seven and now it’s something like a six. Let me tell you, I was standing in the basement of a building that Was probably 200 feet long. And it looked like I was in the ocean with title waves coming at me that were six or 8 feet tall. It was not a lot of fun. It was really scary and a lot of people were screaming and falling down. I can’t imagine what an eight or nine would be. The earthquake in San Francisco in 89 is supposedly greater. But frankly, I can’t imagine what an eight or nine would be. There is a theory that the earthquake from cascadia may trigger some of the volcanoes in the cascade mountain range to erupt. So that would be a double whammy.
@kimberleelee914115 күн бұрын
@bonnieballew7762 The earth is cycling. And all the volcanoes are connected. And the vents are how they are connected. Where I live in Northern California, there are two volcanoes within about 200 miles max. One to the north, and the other to the east. They say one is dormant, but there are sulfur pits bubbling away. I am not educated on these things, but it sure makes a person wonder. Anything's possible.
@brianannheine972815 күн бұрын
While that is possible, none of the major volcanoes in Washington and Oregon erupted following the 1700 quake. Eruptions happened in the 1800's and 1980-90's. Just a quick search shows none in 1700's. Vent systems are less connected than kimberleelee9141 suggests. Study the Icelandic volcanoes erupting now. Scientists talk about different magma chambers and vent systems for volcanoes just a 10s of km apart.

The bigger issues with roads aren't the bridges, but rather the approaches/ramps leading to the bridges. The Marquam Bridge, which carries I-5 over the Willamette River, has been retrofitted, but the approaches haven't. This means that it is reasonably likely that the bridge will survive, but no one can use it because the bridge is now isolated 130' in the air. Very Well done. I live in the region on the Olympic Peninsula. The threat is very real and no one should take this lightly. Where in many parts of the country, the term prepping and Prepper is thought of as some nut who thinks the sky is falling. Here it is simply part of being responsible to our families. In an area where winter weather saturates the ground, those who built homes in Oso , Washington saw water erosion and a landslide that killed almost everyone and buried the community. In 1980, Mount St. Helen's erupted and blew 1 mile of the mountain, off of the top. Natural disasters happen and this one will be bigger than imaginable. Many of us who live in the Pacific Northwest are preparing on a continual basis. We add extra food supplies to feed our families for 3 to 6 months recognizing that aid reaching us will take up to that long. Storage of primary and secondary clean water and secondary water filtration is a real need in this region of wet and rainy climate. We build alternative heating and lighting, add solar and wind turbines, putting deep cell battery banks together, one battery at a time. For me, the cost of a whole home battery back up system similar to what Elon Musk sells is infinitely too expensive to just buy and install. So, we try to prepare the best we can with money left over from the cost of normal living. We know that bridges and overpasses will fall, leaving islands people where it will take months to reach and they must survive on their own. Medical supplies and trying to harden our homes to withstand enough that we can return to get the supplies we have stored. We talk regular with family members about getting of our the house as quickly as possible and where to gather if and who to contact for family information, if we are separated. We have go bags of emergency supplies and equipment in our cars, when we are away, in case we are away from home and need to find our way back to a gathering point. There is a large and growing number of Armature Radio Operators in the area, as messaging is critical. The need not imagined desire to have primary and secondary back up sources for everything necessary for independent off grid living on a long term basis is very real here, even though other parts of the country may feel as though such prepping is foolish. Your brief explanation simply lays it on the line accurately. Great FACTUAL piece. Short, sweet and to the point.

@@dapetik He is not teasing. I do not believe 53 million are at risk,, but a substantial number are. The Cascadia Subduction zone will relieve its pressure. The historical record,, a record arrived at by tree ring dating or carbon 14 dating, has occurred as many as 20 times or more. And at a frequency of between 300 years and 800 years. I relay this from memory.. so take all of this with a bit of (How good is his memory?) The center of it is the west US is creeping westward. and it is over riding the Pacific plate. A demo might be,, Place your hand palm down flat on the desk. Now slide your hand forward and bump into something/ The finger tips stay in about the same place and the knuckles and the hand bow upward The finger tips have kind of stuck against the top of the Pacific Ocean bottom,, they are trying to ride over,, slide over the bottom of the ocean (subduct it) But every so often, it over comes the stuck,, and the Juan de Fuca plate snaps forward and the knuckles fall back to flat on the desk. The shoreline , at this moment is high, the knuckles bowed upward. When it slips the knuckles will fall and what is shoreline today, will be under 2 or 3 meters of ocean suddenly. Areas along the coast that are now high and dry will settle suddenly and become the new shoreline,, often yards or miles farther inland than the current shore. This slow rise, and sudden fall has been repeated about 20 times over the last 7,000 years. The last time was at about 9PM on January 26th in the year 1700. So, 325 years ago. So now,, or 40 years from now,, or 400 years from now,,, it WILL happen again It just makes people nervous when part of the fault, mechanism,, makes a big noise,, 7.0 R Is just a precursor,, a warning that things they are a poppin' Still moving. There WILL be a tsunami with it,, how large,, anyone's guess. The generational stories told by the coastal tribes of 1700 AD talk of villages below the waves and lost forever, people that ran away from the ocean and to high ground survived,, those that were slow did not. Is Seattle at risk,, I don't know, because Seattle is well back in the Sound from the ocean,, It may make the waves bigger, it may make the waves smaller. Same for Portland,, the direct coast,, they better a start a runnin' immediately after the first big shake when the shoreline sinks. Don't wait for forecasts or predictions,, or rescue just run like hell inland for high ground.

I live and have always lived in northern California at the very southern tip of this fault. It is a very interesting area, it is the farthest west point of the lower contiguous 48.. there is a very active fault line that extends straight west under the ocean. There is literally always small earthquakes on this fault line, but there small and hard to even feel. Lately they have been stronger though, we just had a 7 and we've had 5's 6's and now a 7 every winter now for the last 4 or 5 years. It has to mean something! @InsaneCuriosity13 күн бұрын
Vancouver Island might provide some protection by absorbing some of the tsunami's impact, but it depends on the size of the earthquake and tsunami. Damage could still reach Vancouver, especially low-lying areas near the water. As for how far inland and high it could go, that depends on the wave's strength and the landscape. An important thing for anyone in the area that is outrageously under communicated: That old cold war "lets just copy and paste 'drop and cover' to this one too" advice has asterisks when it comes to a megathrust. The gentle P waves will arrive a ~minute sooner than the violent S waves. The building you are in has an iffy chance of standing by the time the S waves are done. If that gentle shaking lasts more than 30 seconds, a duration that is longer than a mild earthquake would last, you have choices to make about if you can get out and into the open or want to brave it out in a building. Moving once the S waves hit might not be very possible - well, moving in a controlled manner anyway. (Or hope it is one of those deep ~7s like the 6.8 a couple decades ago; those are the one type that shows up a couple times a century or so in a subduction zone and can check both the "longer than 30 seconds" and "comparatively mild shaking" boxes. But if shaking exceeds ~45-50 seconds then even that is off the table and the megathrust sized S waves are imminent.)

Hopefully that 7.2 earthquake off the Northern California coast on 5 December relieved enough pressure to prevent a 9+ earthquake anytime soon.
@darkboxofrain14 күн бұрын
This is a commonly held misconception. Fault stresses are not necessarily relieved by earthquakes, as evidenced by their continuing nature regardless.
@darkboxofrain14 күн бұрын
The recent 7.0 earthquake was also on a different fault line, thus unrelated to pressures in the Cascadia subduction fault.
@InsaneCuriosity13 күн бұрын
It could release some pressure along the fault lines, but it doesn't necessarily prevent a larger earthquake from happening in the future. The Cascadia subduction zone, is a complex system, and pressure can build up again over time. Earthquakes of various magnitudes can happen, but it's difficult to predict exactly when or how big they will be.

I looked it up after reading your comment and yeah crazy california was this huge island.. makes sense due to the grand canyon having fish bones, whale carcasses, and sea shells ect like there was once a sea.

Yes, before the 1700s, many maps showed California as an island. Thanks for sharing!

@@ericdollarhyde3296 Wow! Never heard the history on the 1700 quake explained like you did; that’s really terrifying to think about considering the plates could move that much. That’s catastrophic destruction. Thanks for the information, I’ll pass it onto friends we have in Vancouver.

Pacific Northwest (Northern CA, OR, WA, ID,, Western MT, BC, YT, and AK) doesn’t stop at the Cascades. In fact part of it includes the Idaho granite batholith. It is not an earth quake zone. Once you are East of the coastal mountains there are very few active faults. Please keep thinking there is and stay on the coast. We like our way of life as it is.

I'm 53 and think in my lifetime a significant event will occur similar to the one in L A in 1994 the tsunami will not be as severe but waves will reach inland further than anyone ever seen but the region will recover
