I was born catholic but never followed the religion as an adult. I remember how cruel the nuns could be at my old school. The priests acted like they were gods,beyind any reproach. Thd catholic religiin has a lot to answer for throughout history. Dennis is a legend. He had integrity and guts... unlike the others in this account.

Scary Catholic School....those Nuns were so mean. I needed to go to the restroom...she wouldn't let me. I peed on myself...I cried and was so humiliated. I was 7 years old. Here I am..now 74...still the memory stays. Such a shame.😔

Thank god for Detective Dennis, he stood up for what was right and didn’t succumb to the pressure of his peers, even though he didn’t bring those monsters to justice he is still a hero in my book

I was raised Catholic but I left the church because I found it had no meaning. This has only validated my beliefs. A God exists but he chooses to let innocent children suffer while a priest dies without every facing justice, and with his reputation intact. The detective who stood by his principles lost his job and his life changed. God exists yet can do nothing about the rot in the catholic church all over the world throughout history.

Not all churches are meaningless. Priest misdeeds might have been ignored or hidden here, but eternity is a long time. God is a just God, vengeance belongs to God and he will repay. Find a church that has meaning, where Jesus is real and acknowledged as Lord and savior and none other.

What a good man! Utmost respect for his efforts and religion is full of criminals. Why do you think they are so wealthy? Make them pay tax like the rest of us and see what happens then. If you want god in your life then that’s between you and him. He doesn’t want your money. He wants you to be a good person….like Detective Dennis.

Absolutely makes me wrench my gut and feel physically sick. Being raised in the Catholic Church has only sickened and embarrassed me. The vile acts that have festered within the church have only made me realise one true thing...There is no God. Thank goodness for heroes like Dennis Ryan.

Yes I went to a catholic school and they were the worst years of my life. I don’t believe there is god either. I hate religion as it has affected my life and caused me great pain.

now - you at Casefiles - you do a great job. but I feel I must point out a glaring problem with this report: Catholic priests did not give sermons in English at the time in which events in this podcast are purported to have taken place. the author of this piece - though a very good writer - slipped into pure fiction when she or he wrote of Dennis Ryan's discomfort with the hypocrisy of the priest's sermons..!!! ALL Catholic mass was performed strictly in Latin until 1963 at the earliest. AND - even if Officer Ryan had been fluent in Latin, the sermons were formulaic and not personalized. ie: unlike pastors or ministers of other denominations, a priest was not free to decide "well, today I want to talk about the evils of" whatever... sadly, because of this playing fast and loose with the facts - though I'll still listen - I'll be taking everything that's said with a grain of salt. I no longer trust you, Casefiles.

I am one of John Days survivors and I'm here to tell you that when I started school in Mildura in 1963, the masses and sermons were in English. I still remember Day speaking from the pulpit with all the grandeur of the great orator he thought he was. Definitely in English and not a trace of Latin to be heard.
