I'll stick with my 895 versatile. Knowing I don't have a bunch of ujoints and ball joints behind the wheels that would be a pain to replace.

Great video. Thank You for posting. My family has owned 94 series 4wds 1986 thru today. I was there in phoenix in 1984. The event was held at Goodyear farms. Very familiar with all aspects of the design and known service issues, none of which are mentioned in the above posts. I agree there is no tremendous advantage of 4 wheel steering, outside of steep hills/crab steer, but they are simply unique. The 4994 only sold 224 units based on 3 factors. 1) the farm economy in the mid 1980s was a low point, 2) Scania V8 engines while widely accepted in western europe but were an unknown engine in the US and 3) the fact that 400hp tractors were still a very narrow slice of the market demand 37 years ago. I am currently looking for a 4994 to buy or restore. please contact me if you have one for sale.

Id have to check what model numbers they are but the guy I lease my cow pastures from has 2 Case Rigid frame tractors. One is pre international merger and one was post. Both of them currently have blown transmissions and are parked in the hay yard.

But now tractor manufacturers are making ridged frame tractors over 500 hp. In a way case was right. That's why when row crop demanded higher hp tractors they didn't go articulating they went fixed frame minus the rear steering.

I have both articulating and a couple old case tractors. I prefer the case steering any day over articulating. I wish all 4wd tractors were made this way. At the end of the day it all comes down to opinion and guess most farmers want something that bends in the middle and preferably not a white and black combo. Also these tractors had hydraulic/ electric steering issues that would make you want to curl your hair. The 80s technology wasn't up to the task and people developed a hatred for "crab steer". Works great when it "works"

I suspect these went the way of the DODO because of cost. It's got to be cheaper to build a center pin articulated tractor than to have 2 steering axles.

The Scania V8 was a good engine but nobody really knew much about them in the States, so they didn't catch on too well. I prefer Cummins over it, though. These Case tractors had so many issues when they were built so I think I'll stick with my Versatile 895. There's a reason you don't see John Deere or Case IH coming out with big crab steer tractors like these anymore...
@mrbojangles9841
@mrbojangles9841 3 жыл бұрын
But they're making fixed frame tractors over 500 hp now. And they boast they're "fixed frame" Only thing lacking is the rear steering but I wouldn't complain if they added that feature again to make turns sharper on big fixed frames. Where I live most farmers don't even own articulating they usually get a 350 hp or more John Deere fixed frame and use it for both row crop and tillage. In my area articulating is becoming a thing of the past so I personally think Case wasn't stupid in the design it just didn't fit the agriculture market of the 80s and farmers just liked articulating more. I've driven both and I like fixed frame for the same reasons this video mentions.

@mrbojangles9841
@mrbojangles9841 3 жыл бұрын
It actually does "work better" technically. I've driven both. People don't like them. A tractor that doesn't bend in the middle is "neutered" in the farming world. Articulating is cooler. 80s technology wasn't up to the task with computerized rear steering. Multiple issues, including safety if electronics malfunctioned. Mechanically they held up great (u joints and kingpins). I wouldn't be surprised if this makes a comeback in the future but with with larger fwa tractors. If the rear tires turn even slightly it makes a huge difference being able to turn sharper.

PowerShift was on JD 4020 's back in the late 1960's. That steering had company Schüler on there TV series. It was good bud to expensive and maybe kind of overbuild for its time. World wide issues in farming was also a point of :"Let I'd be!" I'm maybe wrong, tell about.
