I build a survival shelter with a folding knife. A working review of my Case large trapper traditional folding knife. How will the Case trapper perform? I thatched this shelter with ferns. They leak and are a useless shelter material. Don't use them. And they say you can't use a folding knife for bushcraft.

My uncle is a highly sought after professional mountain hunting guide and he only carries a Case Trapper pocket knife which he uses to field dress elk, mule deer, white tail deer and when we butcher cattle he uses it to skin and gut bovine. My cousin carries a well used case trapper while out working as a wildlands firefighter and as a carpenter in the off season. Additionally he does a bit of homesteading. In the hands of experienced, knowledgable, men a well made slip joint knife is sufficient for most utility, survival and bushcraft tasks. This is best knife channel on KZbin. And the Irish accent is pleasant to the ears.

I sometimes wonder if people can understand my accent 🤔. I think all the walloping and hammering done on knives on KZbin is unnecessary. I'm no expert at much of anything but I know you can do a lot of work with a folder and that many KZbinrs who say you can't, don't know what they are talking about. Thanks again Andrew 👍

You're a real honest fellow, Vinnie. Good video as usual. I have that same trapper but in the CV steel which I prefer over the SS. It's a good solid knife for sure. Hope you gave the wife a big kiss for rescuing you from the foul weather. As always, thanks for the video.

Thank you Jeff. That shelter was based on examples I had seen on KZbin. It was an eye opener to find it did not shed water. I was quite angry that people would build ineffective or lets be honest, completely useless shelters just to get views

Thank you Mary. I am only learning about sound and editing as I go. My apologies for my earlier work. Too many people on KZbin dismiss folders when I know they can do a lot of work. I would not advise anyone to wander off into the bush with nothing but a folder but they are not as fragile as many say. Thank you very much for watching Mary.

I had planned to make a nice video of cooking on the campfire, relaxing with coffee afterwards, and cuddling my hound etc but I thought it important to show that ferns do not shed water. There are quite a few shelters on KZbin built with ferns. While they work well on a warm dry Summers night, they are a disaster when it rains. Stuff like that could get someone killed. Imagine if you had spent time and energy building such a thing expecting to be dry and sheltered, only to find it was as waterproof as a sieve!

So after watching this video I ended up getting a great deal on a case trapper in SS with yellow scales . Man this knife is a work of art in my opinion . I picked up a couple of case sodbuster Jr s several months back and gave them as Xmas gifts to my best friends . They were great also but just seemed small in my hand . This trapper just fits my hand ,very comfortable ,very SHARP and easy in the pocket . I thought it might be too big but after a few weeks in pocket I catch myself checking to see if it's still there . Thank you for the excellent videos too. Keep them coming !!

Since you are into using jack knifes, here's a tip on an old book that you may find interesting if you don't know about it: Jack-knife Cookery, published in 1929 by James Austin Wilder. A real fun well-illustrated treasure, if you can find a copy. Somehow I lost mine years ago, unfortunately. Original copies now are going for upwards of $200. Another tip: close your knife when you are done cutting with it. Ask Ray Mears why. ;-) He's got a big gash on one hand from trying to work with an open blade in his hand.

Agreed. You might take a look at the SOL version. A bit tougher that the traditional "space blanket" but not overly bulky. I don't think there's a idea option out there, but the SOL comes closest that I've found.

Case sells legions of those trappers because it's such a proven pattern. That yellow Delrin handle is a classic working man's knife, rivaled only by the large stockman.

My Trapper is still going strong Eric, but the CV stockman was a great disappointment. The first one developed serious back spring issues so I sent it back. The clip point spring on the replacement is now really weak, almost to the point (but not quite) where it would be too dangerous to use. It left me with a really bad taste in my mouth with regards to Case knives. I consider them fairly expensive and I expected a lot more. I won't buy another
@slick_slicers
@slick_slicers 4 жыл бұрын
Mine’s been ok, but I’ve not put it to your level of use! That being said, Case do seem to have mixed quality control these days and they’re not cheap. Rough Rider can be just as good at a third of the price. Have you seen their Warncliff Work Knife #2038? kzbin.info/www/bejne/moW4nJaAdtCBp8U
@vinniesdayoff3968
@vinniesdayoff3968 4 жыл бұрын
@@slick_slicers No. I only have a stockman and a trapper. The stockman I have the same length of time as the Case. I used it as a beater. It has much more work done than the Case has yet has no problem at all. The stockman takes and holds a better edge than the trapper. The Case CV steel makes for an excellent knife. It is hard and holds an edge well in the face of work. It is no good if the springs fail though. Actually I have a carbon steel RR trapper that I have not used yet. I need to pull that out and use it too
@slick_slicers
@slick_slicers 4 жыл бұрын
vinniesdayoff the only RR I’ve had that was really poor was a carbon steel medium toothpick. The first one had a really bent blade. I tried to straighten it, but ended up snapping it. I bought another that was better and then Tobias sent me another that was also a bit off. Obviously I can’t speak about the other knives in their carbon steel, but my experience hasn’t bee great so far.

Vinnie, if you have the time, would you consider doing a folding knife sharpening video? How do you keep your blades keen? I know you did a lovely field sharpening video, but I'm curious to know how you re-sharpen your tool when back at home. I use a couple of different methods, usually a diamond plate followed by a fine Arkansas stone and strop. But you may have a different technique. If you're so inclined, give us a video discussing the care, feeding, and maintenance of folding knives. Cheers!
@vinniesdayoff3968
@vinniesdayoff3968 6 жыл бұрын
I don't consider myself expert enough at sharpening to do a video Jack. I can get a knife pretty sharp, but there are many excellent sharpening videos on You Tube, so I will leave it to them. I just have an oil stone with two grits(not sure what grit even) I have homemade strops. I have found it hard to find compound in Ireland for the strops, but I have some green. I also use metal polish on a strop and it works well. I have a butchers steel which I would not be without. The sandpaper makes a good strop too especially when it wears down making it very fine grit. My opinion is that most sharpening stones work well enough. The important thing is to have the edge centered and get rid of burrs. Razor sharpness is good for field dressing large game, but you can cut green wood fairly well with any reasonably sharp knife. Phew, I went on a bit there!
