Don't overlook these old timey pocket knives as a tried and true survival option. ‪@wrcasexx‬ makes some excellent options

Great discussion. The only thing I would add is if one needed to construct a shelter, it’s a helluva lot harder to do with a folding knife but not impossible. George Washington Sears (Nessmuk) advocated a 3 piece blade kit consisting of a large folder, a small fixed blade and a double-bit hatchet. Cool video brother.

Explained very well. Many a pioneer, civil war soldier, etc, carried nothing more than a simple pocket knife. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I would chose the Victorinox Farmer for a survival situation. It has more functionality (blade, saw, awl, can opener/screwdriver, cap lifter/screwdriver) and is a bit lighter than the Case trapper and being only 93mm in length, as opposed to the Case (105mm) is more pocketable........and it is cheaper. It is a no brainer.

Didn't regularly carry a fixed blade until I was in my 30s. Pocket knife wise my father and I had a sort of collective arrangement with both of us contributing as we lost, broke ect, mostly Opinels, hook knives, Sheffield made lock knives, the occasional Sheffield slip joint and my old butcher knives. I kept my hands off his nice American made electricians knives and he kept his hands off my brand new expensive butcher knives and the nice fish knife. My old butcher knives were used for hunting and fishing and the rest of the time we used the pocket knives. You have a dazzling array of pocket sharpeners these days, you could keep a half decent pocket knife up and running indefinitely with minimal carry weight and effort. Pre internet I had no idea about these things except a honing iron for the butcher knives.

Better than nothin. That's for sure. I'd much rather a fixed blade or a knife with a strong lock for edc as well as survival. I love Case knives but I would not want that to be the inly knife I had. I feel the same way about otfs. I love them but around here they would be useless as survival knives for most of the year. I get the whole better to have one than none but I wouldn't want a slipjoint or really any folder to be the one. Even as a backup i'd want something with a strong lock. I always make sure I have two good fixed blades in the car. One large and one mid size in my survival kit along with stuff for fires and to keep warm as well as water purifires and a survival rifle for small to mid size game. As a backup to my backups backup sure but there are so many options now I'd rather have something else. You made some good points. I think where you live comes into play as well. I appreciate your thoughts brother. Have a great week.

"...it's June, it's summer. Not gonna freeze to death outside..." Where are you? There are DEFINITELY places in many wilderness spaces where you will absolutely die from exposure/hypothermia without it being close to freezing. Mountain trails frequented by many hikers/backpackers, for example. Lots of people run into trouble up there.

Great video! You are correct to specify survival, which is getting out of a situation versus bushcrafting which is thriving in the woods. The do overlap in tasks but have different objectives. The trapper and stockman are great edc knives that you likely will have on you when things happen. For my edc I carry a traditional and a modern folder. Really good food for thought.

If an Imperial shell handled stockman (Schrade made) could survive my boyhood and the Cub Scouts I don't see why one wouldn't serve me just fine throughout my adulthood. I'll leave CASE for the big boys of the collector field.

They're lovely knives with interesting history! However, I'm sure their role as backup or light cutting is better filled by other folding knives. A modern knife with a strong lock or a multitool or a Swiss Army Knife might be better.

I've spent a fair amount of time in the woods, in the office, working on shipping docks, in the motorpool and realistically I've found a medium sized stockman to be the most versatile and useful knife. I own and have carried some tacticool blades but generally speaking a stockman is hard to beat. All that behind said, if I'm going into the woods intentionally I'll always have my marbles camp axe. It's in my emergency backpack and it'll accomplish anything the most robust knife will and then some.
