Case study 111 - 🐭Back Mouse 🐭
“Back mice" is a nonspecific term that refers to painful lumps of fat (lipomas), fibrous tissue, or other types of nodules located on the back, usually the lower back. In some cases, they protrude (herniate) through the lumbodorsal fascia. This is the network of connective tissue that covers the deep muscles of the low and middle back. Others may develop in the tissue under the skin.
Back mice were first described in medical literature in 1937 when healthcare provider Emil Reis used the term in association with a condition called episacroiliac lipoma.

Thank you very much for the explanation in this video. I am a medical doctor currently researching the 'back mice' phenomenon. We are conducting a clinical study using ultrasounds, and recently we have also been performing human cadaveric dissections. In these recent human cadaveric dissections, we've observed that the back mouse is actually a large fatty lobule with a deep origin. The head of the lobule is more superficial, just beneath the layer of superficial fascia. You can find recent videos on our KZbin channel, 'Back Mice.' According to our research, the key difference between a painful and non-painful back mouse is the degree of volume due to trapped edema.

I just thought I had a muscle knot that wouldn't go away, even over the course of like 3 years

I have these and they recently became enflamed when I was lifting a bit too much weights doing bench presses and bench fly. What I noticed is when they poke out and drops down to hip bone, that's when it causes lower back pain. What I do is push them back up and in towards my spine in the gap between the hip bone and the spine until you barely feel the lumps, that fixes the back pain. Bad posture sitting crouched for long periods also pushes them out and cause the back pain.

I believe I suffer from this, it’s been 4 yrs or longer and I can feel a palpable lump in my lower left back. I suffer from back and hip pain on my left side and it’s debilitating at times. I am looking into getting an MRI and curious to know if it’s what is causing my hip pain too. Anybody else believe they have this and also have have hip or leg pain?

I've learned that if it isn't causing pain, then you really don't have to do anything. I have them on both sides of my lower back, but only one side causes me pain
