Case study 57 - recurrent disc herniation treated by lumbar disc replacement
The goals of artificial lumbar disc surgery are to:
1) remove the diseased disc
2) restore normal disc height
3) decrease discogenic back pain
4) preserve motion in the affected vertebral segment
5) improve patient function
In comparison to spinal fusion surgery, potential benefits of artificial disc technology may include quicker recovery time, more spine mobility after surgery, less stress on adjacent discs and no need to harvest and use a bone graft.

I'm not a doctor, just a curious author; how long do replacement disks last? Is there a need to eventually replace the replacement, like with knees? Thank you for posting, I've learned so much and really enjoy your content.

I herniated a disc about 6 weeks ago picking up a bunch of boxes. Finally went to see my spine doc, a couple weeks ago, and his prescription was a month of PT and: " next time you have to pick up something heavy, find a young person!" But I'm 72 and literally all of the other counter indications you mentioned as well. Second PT visit out, I'm already 75% back to where I was. Only now I go in search of young people instead of doing it all myself

Cool, I got it correct that an artificial disc was the correct treatment even though I know nothing about spine issues

I think the nucleus of the disc could have been removed during the first surgery, then scar tissue, which is less likely to herniate would fill the space, the load carrying annulus would have been preserved

I wish my spine doctor had given me this much information. I am now seriously considering looking for different spine doctor who will help me. There's a lot more detail about myself but I'm not going to go into it.

New to your channel. I learn so much from everything you post. Can you please post how to appropriately use an at home back stretcher. I have one but I'm pretty sure there is a right way and a wrong way to use it.

Fear of disc issues is what made me back off of deadlifts and especially really heavy deadlifts. No point

I have a question. My 68 year old husband has a bulging disk. The back surgeon said he needs to have the disk taken out and replaced . Do you think hes too old for this surgery?

I've had six back surgery and I'm on no pain medicine the best thing I found was the Denise machine. I used to be on Fentanyl and then went two different kinds of morphine's to get off of fentanyl now I take no pain medicine except for tumeric for the information.

What on earth is a "denise machine"?

Have there been any comparative studies done between the different disc replacement brands? If not, how does one go about figuring out what's the best fit for them?

What brand of lumbar disc replacwment do you use? Its so inhumane the way that disc replacements arent the standard procedure for an avg disc herniatee, you develop severe kinesiphobia and wait to reherniate every day of your life

I have to ask this - why do medical doctors and surgeons recommend chiropractic which is demonstrably no better than a good massage for back pain, and pretty much useless for anything else, because it's based on pseudoscience, spiritualism, vitalism and non-existent subluxations that interrupt the body's "healing energy"? There's literally nothing that a chiro can do that a physical therapist etc can't also do - and especially with a new, acute disk injury, chiropractic would seem to be strongly contraindicated. I genuinely don't understand the popularity of chiros in the US - and especially not why so many people seem to think that they're actually medical professionals with science-based evidence to back them up, too.

It’s an option. I nearly listed all options for conservative treatment. Do I recommend - rarely.

@@ladyspinedoc Okay, cool, that's good to know that it's not high on the recommendation list. I guess it's a cultural difference because chiropractic is not regarded very well over here and I'm genuinely trying to understand why it is so popular in the US.

@@mujeeburrahmansharrief8841 As I said, there's only minimal actual evidence for it helping with mild to moderate chronic back pain (and I'm not aware of peer-reviewed evidence of it being able to fix bulging discs) - but on the same level as any other kind of massage or spinal manipulation done by any other therapist, and depending on the manipulation, it also carries the risk of significantly worsening an injury and even potentially leading to permanent disability or death because of misdiagnosis of critical emergent issues or potential damage to the blood vessels in the neck. Your mileage may vary, but I think I'd rather go to a science-based, evidence-based practitioner instead (be it a physiotherapist or whatever). Especially when it comes to something as critical as the spinal cord.
