It’s so funny that as the entire industry moves towards faster, more immediate, almost assembly like churning out of scenes and content due to smaller budgets, risk averse studios pushing everyone to TV/Streaming, there are still people like Fincher who fight for the time necessary to execute a vision. I’ve often heard him speak of focusing spend on more shooting days vs larger crew/more toys and shorter shoot. Very interesting. Also to important to note, gigantic amount of content generated. I believe either this one or Dragon Tattoo clocked in at over 300 TB of raw footage. They were ingesting some 6-7 hours a day. Insane efficiency and planning to make the entire pipeline work so smoothly with a smaller crew. Back to back Oscars for the post team as deserved as ever!

+Sergio Montiel yea I know they had 500 hours of raw footage for Gone Girl. The camera was running for an average 5 hours everyday of filming.

I can watch Fincher videos until I'm blue in the face. Good stuff Tyler. I think a lot about the long take ethos. It has its pros and cons like everything else. It can occasionally feel too preordained. And it's always debatable that having actors feel like they have all the time in world is the optimum state. Sometimes the pressure to perform can get something more raw. But that's his approach and its as valid as William Friedkin, or Clint Eastwood, who like as few takes as possible.

+The Discarded Image I love Clint Eastwood! He has such a great style as well. And also has made amazing films. Might be a good counter video.

I saw an interview with Fincher where he’s commenting on Kubrick’s and his penchant for a large number of takes and that bit felt, besides looking for something in particular, it might take 30 takes for the actor to stop acting and give him something real. I liked the perspective that rather than being discouraging to the actors, the copious amount of takes, they found it liberating.

Afta watching this half way i was like, shit... pity the editor mann, hv to scout through sooo many footage/shot for jst one scene.. 99 video to run through for the offline edit per scenes eventho ull have the conti list and scenes selection, out of 99 maybe 30 shot are good, and its a feature film which has a lot of scenes ... damn... caps off for the editor

Serves the studios right. Studios are the last ones who should have input to the creative process, I’ve never heard of one situation in which their meddling actually made the film better. I’m sure there are exceptions, but they certainly aren’t enough to make that wrong.

I think the projects David Fincher works on are brilliant, Fight Club, The Game, Zodiac, Benjamin Button, the social network they are all different and all fantastic films I’d say, Fincher is a fine director, I’ve been watching the social network over and over again on Netflix, I didn’t even like it and couldn’t follow it at first but now I think the movie really deserved a lot of awards and Best Picture. Eisenberg, Garfield, Timberlake, Armie Hammer and Rooney Mara are completely perfect in their roles. I love how it’s about the situation of how these ideas of Facebook came about and how Zuckerberg essentially brought the ideas to fruition compared to all the people testifying against him. The film is perfect even if it’s not completely accurate, I definitely think a sequel is a possibility even if it’s not exactly appropriate

Fincher definitely looked up to Kubrick in one way or another since his MO bares a lot of similarities to Kubrick's, especially his philosophy of doing takes over and over in order to analyze them and dig up gems that you wouldn't get otherwise from your standard 5-6 takes. I know he said in one of his interviews that he loved Kubrick's and Spielberg's approach the best, and that he wants his work to be the mixture of the two (paraphrasing, obviously). And Fincher always stuck out to me, not just because he was one of the directors that got me into movies and showed me what directing actually is all about, but because his mastery of the medium, CGI especially, is something a few can rival, let alone beat. Oh and yeah, Rooney Mara saying how she loved all the 99 takes is something that I find both extremely fascinating, as well as just fucking hilarious. Good video.

Great video! I feel like with Fincher it's never possible to cram any possible assessment or oppinion on him in something under 10 minutes just because there are so many aspects that you feel his hand in, and yet, the end result isn't something flashy and in your face, it's all rather, harmonically put together, effortless you might say. little do you know how much effort it actually takes.

@ 6.20. Fincher gets the game (the process...not the flick). If he hires you as an actor, your job is to work your *ss off. You're committed to long, arduous hours, multiple takes and variations...and it pays off (very well) onscreen. I also challenge anyone...any director to make "Se7en" too. A big, Hollywood studio film where the bad guy wins. Who does that?!? Fincher is *just* that good. If I'm wrong....please check his filmography. Zodiac, The Game, Benjamin Button, Dragon Tattoo, Panic Room, Se7en, Gone Girl, etc. Directors can only dream of that level of quality and consistency.

it is super weird to see jordan peele in a montage next to martin scorsese and those other giants. don't get me wrong, the dude hit a home run but he hasn't quite gotten his spurs to be up there with those giants. i think the real test of a major director is the comeback; a lot of directors have done something amazing only to disappoint by not delivering something reciprocating the hype. it's how they're able to bounce back after learning not to swallow their own hype that cements someone into the cultural zeitgeist. fincher has obviously gone WAY past that point
@Syklonus5 жыл бұрын
It's not a competition, and this isn't a "best of" list. Peele is a director, and that section was talking about directors so it makes sense to have a currently hot name in there with more recognisable faces. Besides, there is no "best" in art. There is only "favourite".
