Case Tony Bose Black Pearl Kirinite Swayback

I came across this Knife at the Dog Patch Trading Post in London, Kentucky. As you will see it is a knife with some serious flaws. In deed, these flaws are the reason why Case has developed a reputation of poor QC. While I'm keeping the knife for my own personal reasons, I can't not in conscience, defend Case when the allow this type of QC leave the factory -- especially when it appears on a Tony Bose knife, limited run, or a vault release. These knives should be held at an even hire level of Quality Control.

I’m so very pleased that you spoke out and made the comments that are noted in your video “description”. I’ve been harping about Case quality control issues for months, only to find so many fellow knife collectors/users willing to sweep the Case problems under the carpet. Fully 99% of the Case knives I’ve purchased in the last year have had problems like you mentioned. I can only hope that comments from credible, influential reviewers like yourself will finally wake up someone at Case management. In the meantime, only one (1) of the new Buck knives I’ve purchased had a problem. I emailed Buck customer service and sent photos. They immediately emailed me a free shipping label to return the knife, which I promptly mailed to Buck. A few days later a brand new replacement knife arrived, no hassle whatsoever. No major problems with any of my new knives from any of the Chinese manufacturers, BTW….

Thanks for this video. That really is a bad specimen. I've been hesitant to send the case knives back to the retailer because i feel im just rolling the dice again with case. In the past i would send it back to them directly and pay the shipping. They would ask for photos and respond that they can fix the problems for free. I must have done this at least 10 times in the past years and have always been satisfied with the results. However, as i mentioned a while back in your smkw army post - recently Case has been taking the knives back - keeping them for 2 months and then sending it back to me in the exact same condition - so i just stopped sending them back. But i still buy them for some strange reason.

For what a person will pay to have a American made knife the quality control should be better. I’m sure the example you have there is not a typical flaw across the board but should still be on folks mind when purchasing a Case knife or any other knife brand. Thank you for sharing this.

I agree totally with the quality issues this severe that requires addressed by any product manufacturer. I might think if you explain the problem to Case, they might provide a return shipping label. To return the knife Case provides a form to accompany the knife they send to you that you put inside the return package. In your case, send a paid shipping label as well. Kirinite is an upgraded more durable to chipping, cracking, warping, and shrinking than Delrin. It makes it more costly and Case claims it becomes more shinny with use. 👍

My most expensive Case to date, a large Copperlock, has the same issues as your Tony Bose, with a gap, loose when extended, and rubs against the liner. I've pondered but haven't yet sent it back for the main reason that in trying to fix the issues the irreplaceable covers may be ruined. Can't have that happen.

You really hit-the-nail-on-the-head with your answer: I’m afraid that Case will ruin the nice bone covers, or will elect to just keep the knife and refund my money if I return it, leaving me empty-handed. That’s simply unacceptable to me, especially when it’s a limited edition knife that I won’t have a second chance to buy (other than on the secondary market for 2-3 times the original price🤦🏼‍♂️). I’ve also heard too many other horror stories about Case warranty responses, and I don’t trust them! The ultimate solution is simply not to buy Case knives anymore☹️

The Copperlock in question has absolutely perfect abalone covers which to me is the important issue. And now that they are going for over $400.00 I just don't want to take a chance on losing it. The knife will perform perfectly, it looks perfect and has good walk n talk. Its just that...

I have the same knife so this video is very interesting to me. Thanks! I do find it distasteful that Case would continue to use Tony Bose's name when he's no longer there to do any quality oversight - and then this happens. All the same it is a beautiful knife. All the parts are there it just needs rebuilding ;D

The people at Case quality control certainly don't lose sleep over back-spring gaps. They probably churn out one million knives a month so some bad ones will slip by, right? The Swayback is a legendary TB design. Thanks Tobias

That is one Case pattern I don't have, but I'm going to get one day. So far, all of my online Case knife purchases or new Case knives as a gift from a viewer have been fine on fit and finish. Maybe I've been lucky.

There is always a name attached that should inspire an honest effort to provide quality workmanship, and that name is Case. That name stood for quality long before Bose, indeed a master maker, that might not care to be associated with an inferior product. That said, the buying public deserves a quality effort no matter the name.
