My great grandfather was the ill engineer that Casey Jones replaced on that fateful night. By odd coincidence my wife’s great grandmother was married to Casey Jones. Sometime after his death his widow married a man named Lockspeech and settled in Ohio. One of their daughters was my wife’s grandmother who was born in 1904 and died in 2002. My family and her family did not know each other. Oddly, my wife’s mother and my mother graduated LA High School together but did not know each other. Interesting that my family and my wife’s family had these two connections as strangers.

I once watched a documentary. And one of the old timers interveiwed started on steam and retired on diesel... He said something to the effect of that it's like the old steam locos were living, breathing beings. I've been following the restoration and deployment of Big Boy. Even as oil burners, now, (not new tech, as SP did this with a CA based loco in the 1940s) they still seem to be living beings.

In the UK we had Driver John Axon, born the year Casey died. There are some striking similarities in their stories. Axon was awarded the George medal, the highest civilian honour for gallantry. I would encourage anyone interested to visit Wiki page on John Axon. He had songs celebrating his sacrifice rather like Casey. Also he instructed his fireman to jump for his life. Thank you for uploading this, I'm a big fan of US railroads and envious of your huge loading gauge!

You know what's funny?, I actually live near Jackson, TN. I went there tons of times when I was around 3-4 years old. Mainly because there used to be a shop where the museum now stands that had Thomas the tank engine toys there, mainly Wooden Railway, bless that storylines soul..... Nowadays the only thing Thomas related there are two small wooden railway tables for kids, a few bits of Thomas merch, and a real cool mural of Thomas, Percy, and James! When I saw that I was just... just.... oof... that hit me in the feels as a Thomas fan.... I know this had nothing to do with Casey Jones's, but I just wanted to share that....

Props to Casey Jones, the man was a hero. He stood at his post and made the deal with the Lord, giving up his own life for the passengers. A real railroad man. Sounds like 382 became almost cursed after the wreck. She didn't want another driver. She wanted Casey, the only man who could drive her. There would never be another driver like him, and she wouldn't have it. Maybe now she's reunited with her favorite driver, racing the rising sun for all eternity.

What few people knew was that Casey did some near-physics breaking stuff in that crash. Sim outright stated on the fine railbed of the 1920s to 1940s, the train would have been going 100 mph easily, but given the railbed of the time, he was likely going 75 mph. He managed to slow the train down to about 35 mph, a full 40 mph difference. He also managed to ensure that the cars stayed upright, which prevented more deaths...

Mark Henstridge by modern standards, yes. Back then? pretty regular, as punishment for running late was much, MUCH harsher than just going too fast. this attitude is still there on Japans railroads, as they seem a little obsessed with being on time, and many train schedules don't have much tolerance for being a few minutes late.

I literally just finished reading a biography written by a biographer Jones himself hired, Fred Lee. Reading through the book, it makes sense he hired someone to make sure the went down in history. Wallace was actually one of his good friends, and in the weeks leading up to the crash, Wallace had nightmares about Jones lying still covered by hay bales and surrounded by corn, which Jones laughed off. In the engine after the crash, he was found covered in some hay and corn, which the two rear freight cars were carrying. It’s called “Casey Jones - The True Story of John Luther “Casey” Jones”, and was republished by Guild Bindery Press if anyone is interested.

So yeah the documentary was a mere biography of him. I am related to Casey! His wifes name was "Janie Brady" His kids names were George, Helen, and Johny. Johny died in WWI The wreck was caused by John M Newberry, he was drunk and when the conductor told him to flag the train, he could hardly walk. Casey and Sim were "short flagged". Newberry was supposed to go back one mile, he only went back one quarter mile leaving Casey and Sim no options but to rear end the train. Because Casey stayed on the whistle the conductor was able to get out of the caboose. Simply put, He gave his life so that someone else could live. His fireman was Simeon Taylor Webb, "Sim". Sim died on my birthday July 13th, 1958 I graduated from locomotive engineers school on April 30th, 1988---the 88 anniversary of Casey's death. I have studied his life in detail, he was one hell of a guy---neat story you did on him!!!9

Herbert C. Hamlin I think could be a famous engineer. Of course there is the engineer from the Civil War in the South who was in charge of the engine Texas during the Great Locomotive Chase. That was in northern Georgia in the spring of 1862.

Legend has it that 382 was deemed a "Voodoo Engine" by other crews not long after Casey's death. Most crews knew that she was "Casey's Engine", I don't think she took kindly to their final interaction...

I used to watch "Casey Jones" in B&W on British TV in the late 60's or early 70's. Now I have the full story. Today I'm a professional railwayman working for SNCF. Maybe I'm gonna rustle some feathers here 'cos the guy is an American folk hero - so apologies in advance because I don't want to offend - but it seems to me that the fatal accident seems to have been due to a combination of excessive speed and non respect of safety regulations. If he hadn't been travelling so fast he could have stopped in time to avoid running in to the back of the freight train. What kind of signalling was in use at that time? If it was some kind of block section system he must have passed a danger signal in order to enter the section that was already occupied by another train. If someone can enlighten me I'd be grateful.
