Thank you, Casey. After shooting video with phones for a while, it's really amazing what you can do with the device already in your pocket. A film isn't about the equipment, it's about the message.

Because almost everybody but me has a complete and much bigger cameras/DSLRs. But in the end, I still won. I was very speechless especially when my name was announced on the stage, take note, it was a big event and theres a lot of people of a lot of places. I love when you do the time lapse and b-roll stuff of NYC. such a feeling of excitement. Your comments about the story being everything, really makes me think we've just scratched the surface of this medium. There are so many stories out there to be created and told. Awe-inspiring to think about this new era of technology we are in. I showed my wife this particular episode. She has a degree in film, is a middle school teacher now, and often incorporates film and video creation in her classroom. She found this really compelling and is considering showing some of your vids to her kids. Realize you get thousands of comments a day, but we really get a kick out of, and enjoy your videos a lot.

If someone could jump in and answer this, it would be great. I am very new to video creation. It looks like most of Casey's timelapses are really sped up video vs a string of individual pictures to me. I think that because most of the time the footage returns to normal speed (video) and that can't be done using individual pictures. Is this a correct assumption. TIA.

Creating a video story is like typing a good story on a computer. At first you're going to get all caught up on the technical bits like what computer to use and what operating system and what the heck is word processing. But in the end, you're going to have to learn to use words to build sentences that follow a theme and tell a story - and figuring out that story is every bit as hard as writing up a truly first rate essay. Most people are going to hate it and give up. The rest are going to put together some really painful to watch videos that will get better with practice. Lots and lots of practice... and rework - just like that essay class that most people hate so much. Stick with it, and you'll get good at it. And then you'll realize you could have written just as good an essay using a pencil and paper from the bin. That is to say, don't buy fancy camera gear until you can tell a good story using just your phone.

BUT... and this is a great video Casey!, once you have that great Story and get how to communicate it in a powerful way... you'll always want to get the gear that removes as many technical obstacles as you possibly can! VanGogh used chunks of coal and sketched on burlap... until he gained access through his brother, to the best pigments available :) ALL the gear in the world won't make anyone a great photographer or story teller, BUT if you're already a great story teller, then great gear enhances that exponentially :) ONE joy of "making it" (well below your level), is having access to top gear :) LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!

You forgot probably the most important part. Editing. How to make your boring shots look cool. Sure you might say story > Everything, but thats not the case. Its more like Editing = Story. Very good editing can improve a mediocre story and vice versa.

+Chuan Eston I think maybe you can make the story with editing but you don't always need editing to make your story.
@Vairlocom9 жыл бұрын
Clayton Estes Editing and Story are the main essential parts to a movie. Forget about the gear. Casey says gear doesn't matter so he shows us what camera to use. lol He should have just focused on how to tell a story and how to incorporate that into editing.

@priyapulikkal37499 жыл бұрын
+Fraktallity - Inconsistent vlogs I think you can take any shot and if edited well, you could make a story out of it. Or show your surroundings at least. For example, with caseys stuff. When he is at the beach, he will have unfocused/shaky shots, or close up shots of his surroundings. And just from editing those together it shows the viewer the environment he is in. It's a bit elaborate but hopefully that made some sense haha
@Fraktallity9 жыл бұрын

I was also thinking this was sarcasm. This isn't a video you should watch over and over. It's "gear doesn't matter, story does" and that's it. No filmmaking tips or technical details.

I have a Canon 5D Mark III that I bought two years ago when I started going to Film and TV Directing school. A photographer with no video/film experience convinced me into buying it, and he said it was the best, while cheapest DSLR for video shooting. Thinking back, he was the store owner's friend, and took a nice cut of the money I paid for bringing me there as a client and actually selling me the camera. The store owner didn't really talk, this photographer guy was the one who did all the talking, showing me the "amazing" features of the 5D. It's a heavy ass camera that will make everybody turn around and look at you. It can record a maximum of 1080p with very lousy dynamic range. Even when I get the urge to go out and take some pictures, I change my mind because it's really cumbersome and I don't have anybody to come with me. I am scared of shooting photos or videos out in the streets because I can get mugged. Uneducated people in my country think cameras cost tens of thousands of dollars. I've had numerous people come to me while filming, asking if I work for some TV channel, how much the camera costs, what am I filming and so on and so forth. It's really problematic, and the overall quality of the videos is BAD! Photos are wonderful, but you can find smartphones nowadays that shoot way better videos than my Canon 5D Mark III. Gear matters, in many different ways. If you're creative and want to shoot something at all costs, you can do it with anything, even a smartphone. But if you want to make quality content, you need the right gear. This applies to audio too, so don't be scared to invest in a good handy recorder and a shotgun mic or some cheap lavaliers!!! I am going to sell my Canon 5D Mark III as soon as I can, to buy a Panasonic GH5!

Sorry to say, but you seem very uninformed on camera gear. It's not the camera's fault, it's you. Canon 5D Mark III is an amazing camera, that with the right firmware (Magic Lantern) can shoot wonderful lossless 10-bit 4K video. Even the older brother the 5D Mark II was used in many Hollywood movies, as it's film capabilities, the lenses available and the color science was spot on. You have to be joking about the smartphones shooting videos as well, you obviously just don't know how to use our gear lol. Part of Iron Man was shot on a 5D Mark III....
@ole24004 жыл бұрын
BTW, the Panasonic GH5 wont do you any good either, unless you actually start learning how to use your gear, instead of obsessing about what gear you have.
@Albanez394 жыл бұрын
@@ole2400 You're right. Nonetheless, I bought the GH5 and I've started shooting some stuff with it. Strangely enough, it brought back my passion for photography as well. I've been making focus stacking stills, macro, street photography. I shot photo and video of the BTS of our films (my classmates') and a couple of paid projects. It's great, but my computer can't edit smoothly even with proxies...but in this case I'm not obsessing as long as my current PC can't manage the footage properly. Anyway, I'm done justifying myself...but your perspective is correct as well. If you don't go out and start shooting right now, you won't in the future, regardless of the gear you have :)
@ole24004 жыл бұрын
@@Albanez39 Great to hear, I hope you enjoy the GH5, it's a great camera as well. I just didn't want people to get the wrong idea about the 5D Mark III, especially now when it's more affordable on the 2nd hand market. It's still a great video camera with some tweaking to it's firmware!

I know that there is like 0.001% chance Casey will actually see my comment because I totally realize how many comments he gets on daily basis. This video is awesome. I am exactly the same way and I agree 100% or more with what he says here. I work as photographer for 13 years now... never needed more then 3 lenses I have here. It seriously doesn't matter what you have.. it is the story, the ultimate results. When I was starting up my youtube channel a little while ago, I was thinking like majority of people.. "I got to buy new camera".. so wrong... the camera is not going to sell you or get out there.. the story will. I am actually experiencing some of that.. tiny bit... nothing like you Casey.. Amazing video, an eye opening experience for many people out there... thank you for doing this. Wishing you nothing but the best.

Did this take longer to edit since you used so many different cameras? Cool to see the difference (or lack there of) between them all!
@derxer6149 жыл бұрын
+TheSUPERHAPPY1 Probably yes because of the film camera...
@barnabro9 жыл бұрын
+Der Xer That camera doesn't shoot on film. It shoots on tapes. Digital tapes, but tapes none the less. MiniDV or Digital8 most likely. However you're right that it would take longer, because when you come to import the footage (via a capture card or firewire), it transfers in real time. IE if you shoot 1 hour of footage, it will take 1 hour to transfer to the computer. On the plus side, DV tapes often use much lower compression than early HD cameras with hard drive or solid state storage.
