@@CaseyPutsch Also agree that this concept vehicle made into a prototype is quite well thought out, developed with many excellent implementations. There are two innovations You might consider to use in a modified power train. A. Stanley Meyer's Hydrogen internal combustion engine + water to hydrogen conversion method system. B. Add hydrogen extraction from H2O water vapor exhaust. C. Hydrogen generator, extractor from air. D. Higher efficient, higher power/weight ratio internal combustion engine: Liquidpiston X rotary engine.; 4 HP/2 Kg, 40 HP/20 Kg air cooled,combustion engine works with multiple fuels - hydrogen, diesel, ethanol, methanol, gasoline, etc. and combinations. I don't remember when I first saw the interview you did with Ed over on Vinwiki when you talked about this car, but that was my first intro to you. And when I saw the car and heard about the performance, my first thought was, "I want one." That desire hasn't changed. I want one. It's fast, but so what, I will most likely never take a vehicle much above highway speeds, because I am not confident in my ability to do so safely. The thing that made me immediately attracted to this car was 1) The aesthetics, but more importantly 2) The aesthetics WHILE ALSO GETTING 100+ MPG! I won't lie and say, "Oh, I don't care how the car looks as long as it gets me from A-B reliably," even though I know how a car looks shouldn't affect my desire to own it. Luckily for me, it seems that designing for a low coefficient of drag also tends to make for a really damn cool looking vehicle. All that said to say, I'm glad you are bringing the Omega car back out, and I look forward to what the future has in store for this amazing vehicle. Because as you kind of said in the video, what makes this car so revolutionary isn't the powertrain, it's the design. A monocoq, removing mirrors, running the airflow under the car and up behind the seats to create a more laminar flow to the radiator, etc. Everything that was done on this vehicle to make it as slippery as possible means that regardless of if this car is an ICEV or a BEV, it will retain it's efficiency level. The only thing that will have much of an effect on efficiency after this point is if someone can improve the efficiency of available powertrains. I look forward to seeing this on the road again, best of luck to you, and I hope the chance to own one for myself comes sometime soon.

I'm reminded of something from Architectural school. One class a Prof. was boasting about all of the great advancements some guys in San Fran were doing, new materials, new methods, etc. in building. Years later I was working with an Architect who was a professor(not the boaster) from my old college. I asked him, what ever became of those guys in San Fran. He told me they were stopped dead at the bureaucracy. From my own experience that's been the biggest problem our world faces. But most people do not have a clue about it. Only look confused when they are told, you can't do that because the law... But talking efficiencies in the automotive world. I look at that very differently than you do. I look at cars as systems, of course that is a relative term. In engineering like life there is always a price. I agree the diesel is the most efficient of engines. Not just talking mileage, but if it's combustible a diesel can run on it. I know a guy that ran his car on fry oil, he got pulled over for the funny smell his car made. He had to pay his estimated highway taxes, that he wasn't paying at the pump. Yea, there is no way to win.

Casey, I've caught nearly all the videos you've shown of the Omega car, and since I know exactly what sort of donor car the engine comes from, I'm always interested. But everything you've shown of the car is a teaser, to me. I'd love to see the Omega car from underneath, or vignette videos showing some of the suspension, or simply show us what's under the front panel between the wheels next time around. I've always wanted to see a more "boring" video where you dig out photos of when it was under construction, to see some of the history behind it. Then you could better explain some of the design choices you'd made 10 years ago, like... - how was monocoque composite over foam body was laid up? - what sort of test pieces you tried before diving right into the body? - how did you make mounting points join that unconventional body to fit the metal bits like the suspension or engine mounts? - is the Omega car registered -- and how onerous was the process of registering a handbuilt car not based on another car in your state? Looking forward to more appearances of the Omega car. Don't be afraid to show us it opened up a bit more.

Fellow Ohioan and car-lover here. I think the Omega Car is a fantastic concept and brilliant execution. I've been kicking around the idea of designing and building something like this for a while. I daily-drive a 2002 Miata for 8 years, and aside from hauling stuff, it was the best car I have ever owned because it was simple, light, cheap and fun. It's time for a revival of Lotus' philosophy of "simplify and add lightness." Government restrictions are opening up for small/low volume manufacturers and Columbus, OH will be the next Silicon Valley in 5 years , so it's a good time for ground-up thinking. Would love to touch base sometime and see how I can help.

Otherwise, I still have questions. 🙂 Looking forward to watching this series. ( throw a couple of Lambo stories in between LoL)

What do you think of Aptera Motors? Generally, they seem to be aligned with the Casey Putsch approach. I'm not sure about how recyclable the cars will be, but they're very light (1700 lbs), very aerodynamic (0.13), made with a composite monocoque, and have solar panels to increase range and decrease reliance on grid charging. They don't look like sports cars, but the three motor version does 0-60 in 3.5s. Also, I believe they'll get up to 1000 miles of range.

I think something like the Cannonball run, with its combination of distance and speed, would give you some testing and the car would do well in. Are events like that still running?
@silaswolfe3812 жыл бұрын
As a non-structural suggestion, you could tune it for 2 modes. 1: normal mode where you CAN expend and "waste" fuel like you did in that first test. 2. A more distance oriented and environmentally-friendly mode that physically *will not* do anything that wastes fuel. For example, if you want to squeeze drag racing power or something out of it the ecu just refuses to give it to you. This could help delineate activities and give you even better mpg when you want to tell the world how efficient and fast it is.
