Casey Putsch starts up and drives was was called the world's only turbine powered bat car across country after a very disappointing time at a dealership. He explains and reviews all the systems and the start-up procedures of the ex-military turbine engine and its operations while driving.

A shitty situation but every cloud has its silver lining. This is probably the best and most comprehensive driving video of this vehicle on KZbin. Everything else I've seen is always the car arriving, leaving or simply static and spooling up. This time we actually get to see it cruising down the road. Casey, thanks for having the mindfulness to record the drive home. Even when you're mind was probably in a very different place as you did it!

I know how you feel driving that car. First off, riding bikes, you're aware that people could hit you. I drove a very expensive and somewhat rare Ferrari in heavy traffic once, and everybody that saw the car instantly forgot about driving and stared. So not only do you have the traffic to deal with in the first place, there's the fact that pretty much everyone within visual distances has temporarily forgotten how to drive their cars. It's terrifying, particularly when it's not your car!! I remember driving behind a friend once who was driving his Countach. Watching people absolutely WIG OUT as the car went past was hilarious, but scary.

I curious if running a generator off the turbine engine, and have that attached to electric motors in the rear or the the front and rear would be more efficient. Basically running the turbine at the same constant speed the entire time and regulating the current to the electric motors with a gas pedal or hand throttle controls like the bat mobile in the movie? If feel that it should be easier to drive that way, not having to deal with constant throttle changes or gear changes... Really cool car though. By far my favorite bat mobile that was portrayed in the movies...

Loved the theatre of the shut-down procedures - lots of switch-clicking and the sigh of the turbine slowing. Just like a spaceship in the movies - or Thunderbirds, with the lantern-jawed hero looking focussed and purposeful.

How awesome that car is. Odd question you said it runs on Jet Grade A rather then other fuels and burns at the same fuel rate running or idling 16 gallons per hours. What kinda of mileage is that? 16 smiles per gallon like Jay Leno says with his airplane powered cars. Guessing about 3.4mpg at 55mph or 4.3mpg at 70mph (ouch) at about $4.11 per gallon means it cost over $65 per hour to drive in fuel. It cost money to be so awesome

I was listening to your story about the dealership and nodding along like "Yeah, sound annoying"... Until you hit the part about people getting in and sitting in the car even thought specifically prohibited. Had it been me in your seat there and then, I'd have first of all stopped and documented everything when I got wind of this. I would also have sought reparations from the dealership for breach of contract and each and every scuff I found. Oh and made sure people knew which place I was talking about so they'd know not to let them touch their cars.

It's not economical to have a lot of "headroom" in a turbine engine, they basically consume the amount of fuel they do (a lot) regardless of the RPM (sure there's a measurable difference between idle and full power but it's single digit percents) so you generally want to run them close to full power all the time. Apart from top-speed testing on salt flats, just how fast can one even drive that magnificient beast, I doubt it has very good cornering at high speed (and it's not meant to).

Ole Billy Robert here had his own early model Batmobile. In fact, it was based on a 1959 Chevy station wagon cut down into the world's first El Camino, as far as I know, but the point being that it already had wings on it. Just like you, when I drove it folks pointed and looked, but it may have been 'cause I never unloaded the back end at the dump. Finally, some feller came around, may have been Rusty Peters or Les Manley from the Peterson Museum, what wanted to buy it. Being a young and naieve boy of about 43, I thought he was gonna put it on display, but that somebitch hooked a wrecker to it, handed me $35 (twice what I'd paid), and took ole Natilda to the crusher. I've despised that Peterson Museum ever since, even if she did need to be put out of her misery!
