Hey fencekid, a little over a year ago I was stuck in a testing lock down with some 9th grade geometry kids for 5 hours during SAT testing at my High school. To kill time after about 2 hours of math we started surfing KZbin and stumbled across you. One of the kids said , "hey we should do that". So now on march 14th 3/14, pi day, we make coin rings. Thanks, my students dig it and everyone gets a ring. Last year we pumped out about 200 rings in 3 days. This year about 140.

millej38 That's so cool! Tell yer class I'm proud of them, and I'd love to be there to see the pride shine. Way to hustle guys!! Remember, skills can not be purchased. They are earned through trial and error, effort, patients, hard work and attention. The upside is that you get to keep them for life, and no one can take them away. Not only that, but you have the ability to share, and pass them along to others. Good stuff. I'd love to have a picture of you guys showing off yer new rings.

I came up with that idea a while ago but I used pieces of balsa but now I use a totally different punch and die set that I machined on my own that works for any sized coin. Very useful for common coins definitely.

I have learned so much from you, thank you for your comprehensive videos. As a person that hardly had any tools, I went and bought the die punch set and the doming block. I have made 4 rings and for the most part they are good... Most of my problem is getting both edges even, I can't seem to roll the thick end over enough, Next will get a press and a torch.. I think the neighbors here me hammering..

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I really love your videos and like your style of teaching. Very casual and direct. I only made my third ring so I have plenty to learn and have discovered a few issues but I will continue to watch your vids and read the comments before I reach out. Thank you again. Ryan

I have to say. Everything about making coin rings I learned from you. I have been making rings for about 2 months now and People are amazed and love the rings I make out of quarters. However I gave up on making rings out of half dollars. They take too much time as compared to quarters and I cannot make smaller sizes out of them. You are an excellent teacher and I thank you. Keep up the good work. Ray

raymond eagan Thanx Man! I am so glad to have helped out. I remember scanning coin ring videos trying to absorb as much as I could find about making coin rings. My options were very limited back then, and the ones I could find, were very tight lipped about the techniques, and more focused on directing you to a website to sell you a ring instead of really teaching anything. So I decided to make vids that I would have loved to have found, during my quest for information in making coin rings. Thanx for watching:)

Solution for quick insert 1:57, use a pointed 3/16 nail or steel. Then insert rest as needed. Continue reading for details.... The 2nd hole which is a 3/16 punch isn't tapered so it is hard to insert. Find a metal for this 2nd hole and taper it like a tip of a pencil. A sand paper or file will do. The 3/16 punch that came with it is actually tapered but not tapered enough. I believe tapering this a little more won't affect the function of the punch.

i have this disc cutter, and i use 24ga,26ga, and 28ga sterling with it, my punches seem to always get stuck and i need to sue something to hammer them all the way through, and sometimes that screws up my discs. im using a 2lb hammer, and use bees wax to lube the cutting ends, how do i stop them from getting stuck? yours go through so easily.

Hey Fencekid! Love your videos, I've made some pretty sweet rings based on what I've learned from you. Just had a few questions based on my experiences. First off, I have neglected to quench my coin and just put it on the mandrel and hammer away. Most of the time I lose the cool designs on them and have to scrap my work, but is there something that goes on in the quenching process that makes the coin more durable? I use a ball peen hammer...what kind do you use? I hate the scratches that ruin the lettering and images/designs on the finished product, especially the major ones that don't buff off on the polishing wheel. I'm open to any suggestions or ideas from a pro, and I will be eagerly awaiting your answer! Thanks man!
@fencekid9 жыл бұрын
Quenching just speeds up the cool down. But I think that not quenching will leave your coin a bit softer. If you use a nylon mallet or wood mallet to form with, it will preserve the markings on the coin. Pretty sure that is your main problem. Always try to avoid metal on metal contact. Especially around the coin markings. The only time my metal hammer touches a coin ring, is when I'm doing the tap out method, opposed to the fold over method. Did you see my other vid on how to preserve the inside markings of the ring as well?

Hey fence, what if you were to slip some kind of wedge in between the plastic card and the top piece . wouldn't that keep it snug? If that works for you please make an updated vid. Joe

I have watched several KZbin video using the Harbor Freight coin punch, which makes punching a hole to look easy as pie with an un-tempered coin. This video uses a different punch set but makes it look very easy. I tried it with a hammer, which did not work, which only ending up chipping the punch set Plexiglas. I then tried a one ton arbor press, which was unsuccessful (a quarter, a tempered quarter, and a brass coin). I had some limited success with a additional 12" cheater on the arbor press but only when I started small and worked my way up. I tried tempered coins with about the same success. What am I doing wrong?
@fencekid7 жыл бұрын
Throw a three or four foot cheater bar on and it will be much easier. Those presses are tough

Thanks for the help! I am afraid of bending the arm which is only about 5/8" Dia. I looked at a lot of KZbin videos, none of which made punching the hole look anything but easy. If I have to buy a hydraulic press, they come in various sizes, rated in tons. e.g. 5, 6, 10, 12, etc. I was sure that a one tone press would be more than adequate but I was obviously wrong. What size should I buy? I appreciate your videos as they have been helpful for other stuff.Bill

does the center punch set comes with the cards or you buy them separate?
@Johnyrocket708 жыл бұрын
I am trying to punch a 1mm hole thru the center of a 3mm pin up to 1/4" long, the same brass pins that go in locks. milling machines and presses are to much. what can I use? not all pins are that long they vary in sizes I could flip them and punch both sides if it's possible. I seen lots of metal punches screw types too, I don't know how I would do it.
@blueblue83574 жыл бұрын
My problem is when I go to whack the punch, I'm only denting the quarter and it's not actually punching through. I tried a 4lb mallet on a workbench, and i also tried using a 1/2 ton arbor press and I just can't get it to go all the way through. I can puncture through a dime, but nothing thicker than that. What am I doing wrong and how can I proceed? (Thank you! to anyone with advice!)

Wow! I don’t think I’ve had a centered hole yet. Sucks getting a catywompus ring in the end. Upside, ring not uniform, looks hand made, each one I’ve made has different characteristics. I haven’t tried selling any yet, mostly making for myself and gifts for family and friends. Each ring takes me 3-4hours though. Plus I file ALOT of silver off ring. Therapeutic to me. Especially when file slips off ring and slams into hand. Lol... I also cook bacon on stovetop shirtless.. #kindainto pain

Oh forgot to tell you all the size's i recieved 1/2 for 25 cent and 1/2 for 50 cent they work awesome I will be orderin the 7/16 and anty other size's he has/ Even thought i am sendin him a 140 dollar blade i will still buy his other's the knife is for his kind jester of sendin the cards for free to me to try out, so out of respect i am sendin that blade to him. I don't make knive's much anymore i am a disabled Veteran and would rather make coin ring's. So if Skip doe's show you all the knife? I don't make them anymore but i can send you to a friend that i have given all my plan's too and the guy who water jet's them out for me. Not sure how much he charges thats up to him and you all. Thx all and buy buy buy Skip's cards well worth the money if i was him i would sell them for 20 bucks still affordable then a machined punch. also if i was him i would sell replacement cards if one of the others breaks we don't know how long these will last? Replacement cards i would sell for 6-8 bucks a card that needs to be replaced. Awesome job Skip and what a contribution you just gave all of the coin ring maker's out there you have given the average person that just wants to make rings for friends and whoever a affordtable way to make them. I make rings to sell and i still will use your cards' i still will use my machined punch aswell but your cards rate rite up there my friend. Michael

I made on of these almost a year ago. The trick is, once you punch a perfect coin, SAVE it. Use that coin to make you jig. Get a piece of soft flooring drill a hole slightly smaller than a quarter using an adjustable spade bit. Next, place that punched quarter in that drilled hole. Next slide that in your HF punch and push the 7/16 punch through the punch and punched coin. Finally put two pieces of wood around the two edges snugly against the punch. You have just made a jig. It is perfect for YOUR punch. Save your perfect quarter for making additional jigs
