The Bafana trademark was owned by a company called Stanton Woodrush for decades. This prevented SAFA from making revenue from the name. They eventually sold to SAFA after the 2010 world cup following public outcry. SAFA paid the company 5 million. I imagine Stanton Woodrush made a killing from the trademark when they still owned it, especially leading up to the 2010 world cup. Whomever was the SAFA head of legal, and the head of marketing in the early to mid 90s dropped the ball big time.

Bro u spoke about soccer clubs in SA but in rugby n cricket u spoke about the national teams.. what are the numbers saying about local sports excluding national teams... is it true that 2023 MTN 8 final between Pirates and Sundowns had more VIEWERS in South Africa than the South African viewers of the 2023 rugby world cup final? This was a statement from Mr Ivin Khoza... Also, what makes rugby players get soo many endorsement deals yet soccer players have the same number of followers n attraction but they dont get as much . What are the numbers with our local sport, which sport pulls the best numbers even for Supersport, whats their bread n butter. 🤔 coz DSTV stopped sponsoring psl but thy still kept the broadcast deal... im curious as to why
@mooshtaffaАй бұрын
Hi Nsika, just a point of correction is spoke on Bafana which is a national team. I even went as far as outlining their trademark value and how much money they generate every year. In fact what I didn’t get around to are the right and cricket local teams because there wasn’t much verifiable evidence of finances. Just for reference 94m people watched the SA v NZ rugby World Cup final. The issue with the Irvin Khoza statement is that he again looks locally when our national team plays and is watched globally. It is for that reason that rugby gets more money. Also rugby in SA is VERY organized. I come from a rugby playing school in the EC so I know this. Also it’s held up by small local businesses at primary and high school level. Look at high school teams. They have sponsors, team busses, branded kit, 3 coaches for first teams etc Soccer pulls the viewing numbers but its audience doesn’t have as much buying power like rugby. For instance Land Rover will sponsor the boks and advertise during its games and even normal rugby games. (Brands want higher LSM clients from rugby and mid to low from soccer) Think about which car brand advertises during soccer games and at what price point are those vehicles. DSTV stopped sponsoring because they have a business model crisis and cash issues amongst other things. But they know that soccer pulls in the numbers from a middle and lower base consumer. It’s why townships households have dish. Local soccer (PSL) brings in 950-R1BN per year. So if there wasn’t a division between PSL and SAFA soccer would be at around 1.3billion in revenue. But there’s politics and centres of power. Hope I answered some of your questions

Soccer in South Africa is only popular to those within the country; outside the country our soccer teams are a disgrace who couldn't win against a blind frog. If we are talking about the soft power a country can leverage from our sports teams we shouldn't even include soccer in the conversation. Right now theres only one national sport that presents South Africa as world champions, and thats Rugby, and beyond that it is also one of the only sports that truly brings brings South African's of all nationalities together whenever they play. I'd say thats the only sport worth investing in, that and combat sports if more South African's other than Dricus can start dominating sports organizations like the UFC.
@mooshtaffaАй бұрын
I agree and disagree with your statement here. Bafana got to semifinals of AFCON(which has 54 nations) and was watched by 10.3 million viewers just in SA. Mamelodi sundowns is the reigning AFL champions and they have a continental star for winning CAF champs league. 🌟 Funny enough rugby and soccer aren’t far off in recent times when it comes to revenue from broadcasting and sponsorship revenue. Betway just pumped a Billion into the PSL . Maybe the ackerkey sports deal will widen the gap if it goings through. Rugby is branded as being rainbow nation but it’s still skewed heavily white. The emergence of black spectators and rugby games is new. I’ve been watching rugby as a black person since I was 8 yrs old because I grew up middle class and went to Model C schools. I am a small percentage of the SA rugby fan. Rugby is a white sport. Soccer is a black sport. What we should be doing is bridging the gap more and exposing more people to each others sports, Rassie and siya are doing that for now. But who knows what comes next.

@@mooshtaffa Agreed. In all earnesty I am not a big sports fan myself, so I am pretty clueless when it comes to non-combat sports, the only sports that do catch my interest are combat sports like the UFC and boxing, and even with combat sports its only a casual interest. In terms of upbringing I was exposed more to Rugby than I was to soccer, and I even went to a high school that didn't even have a soccer team, they only played rugby; there was a non-official soccer team that was organized by some students after school, but the school put all its resources into rugby. As you've mentioned rugby is generally a white sport, and soccer a black sport so it isn't surprising that soccer would have a higher viewership when population demographics are concerned. I also think Betway are very smart for spending a billion to sponsor the PSL, and with the prevelence of sports betting in South Africa, they are likely to make that money back twofold in due course. I also think that if rugby was encouraged and played outside of model C schools that generally service children from the suburbs, that would be a good way to increase the sports non-white audeince. Either way, keep up the good work with your videos, they are so informative and you always present the information in them in a way that is very appealing. I enjoy your content and the effort you put into researching the topics you talk about. I've been following you on KZbin for a while now, and will continue to do so in the future.
