Bless you, Jen, it's fine that you don't like this film, it is what it is, as we say here in the U.K. "It's Marmite" (Marmite is Beef Yeast paste, which people put on toast, etc) you either love it or hate it, you seem to be the latter. I hope that you do the other two Austin Powers films, 'The Spy Who Shagged Me' and 'Goldmember' they're both great films. I'm not particularly a fan of 'Never Say Never Again' some people like it though, it's an unofficial Bond film the plot of which is a reworking of 'Thunderball'.

There's a story behind this movie. Casino Royale was the first Bond novel by Ian Fleming. He sold the rights to a movie studio that did nothing with them. He wrote the 2nd Bond novel called Dr No, and sold the rights to a different studio. This started the Bond franchise as we know it, setting the tone with Sean Connery etc. The success of the actual Bond movies made the OG Casino Royale rights holders want to cash in, but they only had the rights to that one novel. They didn't have the rights to any interpretation of the characters etc. Many years later, and the owners of the actual Bond franchise bought the rights to Casino Royale, which became the Daniel Craig version from 2008. This is an oddball. It's VERY 60's. It's one of those "it's so bad, it's good".....or a hot mess.

Thank you. David Niven, who stars as the retired James Bond served in the British Army prior to WW2, resigned his commission and had a few starring roles in Hollywood before returning to England with the start of WW2 despite being warned to stay in Hollywood. In England he rejoined the army and was recommissioned as a lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) before transferring to the British Commandos, the origin of all modern special forces. He served through out the war taking part in the Allied invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He finished the war a lieutenant-colonel before returned to Hollywood as an actor.

When the Germans launched Operation "Wacht Am Rhein," the Battle of the Bulge in last months of the war, the attacking force included "Brandenburger" commandos in US Army uniforms who spoke passable English. Word spread and Military Police and other troops began quizzing soldiers, listening for foreign accents, and asking about details of American culture, sports, geography, etc. to suss out the German commandos. Even General Omar Bradley's jeep was stopped three different times: He correctly identified the guard as the football player between the center and the offensive tackle, had to convince another MP that Springfield and not Chicago was the capital of Illinois, and was stumped by an MP about actress Betty Grable's latest husband (the MP waved General Bradley through anyway). Lt-Col David Niven was stopped as he drove behind the lines. He couldn't answer a single question posed to him, and finally responded to the last question with, "Haven't the foggiest. But I did co-star with Ginger Rogers in 'Bachelor Mother.' "

This was REALLY the first "Austin Powers." It's weird because it's a train wreck you can't miss. The individual performances and the music carry it well enough to survive the movie and one ends up just appreciating the comedic buffoonery.

My dad, an old Connery purist, LOVES this movie and had me watch it when I was probably too young to get it. While I definitely see how it doesn't coalesce very well, there are a lot of individual bits I still love and that soundtrack is immaculate. To this day, I still use the "Very low threshold of death" bit as my warm-up for doing Allen-esque voices.

Oh wow...I saw that way too young(4 or 5), on HBO I think and that dolls scene still haunts me. But I think I can make it through a reaction to it. Weird it still bothers me because Jason, Micheal and Freddy or even Chucky never did. Maybe because by grandparents had given me a doll similar looking that I had never liked. Its gone now. I hope. David Niven might have been the Archetype for James Bond. His military service includes time as a Commando during WW2. Indeed, Bond author Ian Fleming had Niven as his first choice for the role.

the Bond character is largely a creation of the Ian Fleming's imagination, but some of his various aspects were inspired by real people that Fleming knew or knew of. Bond's cleverness, parts of his personality, and his fighting style in the books were inspired by Sir William Stephenson, a former WWI pilot and later a spy and information analyst and spy agency organizer. Stephenson was neither tall nor large. (Bond's fighting style in the early books was to fight dirty and cleverly, very much like Jason Borne is depicted in the Borne movies, and if possible to get his opponent on the ground and kick him. Bond wore custom pointed dress shoes with hidden steel toes and rubber soles.)

Daniel Craig's Casino Royale is a masterpiece next to this unofficial parody. Actually this book or script was supposed to be the first movie of the saga, but the 007 producers didn't have the rights and it took years to get it, that's why the official movie took so many years to be made and it was only possible in 2006. That's why Casino Royale is like the origin of 007, it shows how he becomes the agent he is and how he gets his license to kill.

Of note, it does have an all-star cast, music composed by Burt Bacharach (my favorite being the main title by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, not to mention The Look Of Love, sung by Dusty Springfield). The original soundtrack vinyl pressings are sought after by audiophiles and collectors as the original studio master tapes were damaged. Debra Kerr was in Black Narcissus and David Niven and Cantinflas were in Michael Todd's Around The World In 80 Days. {)

10/10 The film that inspired 'No Time To Die' Warning: Spoilers When Daniel Craig's final 007 movie was released last year, It struck me as being remarkably similar to this 1967 all-star spoof. Here's the evidence; both movies begin with Bond in retirement and another 007 in his place. In both movies, an American is responsible for getting Bond back into action. In both movies, Bond has a daughter ( even their names are similar ). And both movies end with Bond apparently being killed in an explosion. Future film historians will find it hard to believe that the 1967 film was made first as it looks like a spoof of the Craig movie. The only thing we don't get in the latter is the SMERSH flying saucer. 'Casino Royale' frequently gets bashed for not taking 007 seriously. Which was the intention. How can you have a spy who wears a tuxedo, drinks Martinis, and drives a sports car? So the film makers decided to have some fun with the character. Just as Eon later did with the Roger Moore Bonds. Quite right too. There's a lot to enjoy in this movie, from David Niven's dignified take on Bond, and Peter Sellers as the gambler hired to take Bond's place. Burt Bacharach's music, fun action scenes, and Michael Stringer's amazing sets. Humourless Fleming fans really need to put away their hated of this movie and enjoy it for what it is - a product of its time, when Bond-mania ruled the world. An era we are never likely to see again.

This is definitely a love it/hate it movie. I love it. Especially the music. The astonishing thing is how close the story is to the book. My favorite line is when Vesper asks Evelyn, "Isn't that a girl's name?" he responds, "No, it's mine!"

Casino Royale 67 really has to grow on you, unfortunately. I did not enjoy it on my first watch either, but now really enjoy the multiple Bonds, Ursula Andress (Honey Rider), and poking fun at Bond's cliches (womanizing, gadgets, murder, etc). Peter Sellers shouting "More!" to Orson Welles' ridiculous magic show will always make me laugh.

24:35 A very infamous story about this scene. I'll let the actress tell it in her own words: "As a sick joke, Sellers turned and fired the gun directly into my face. There was a blank in the gun and the burning gunpowder and shreds of the blank hit me directly in the face. First I thought I had actually been shot, and when I realised it had been a blank I thought I had been blinded. My face looked like a shower spout of pin pricks leaking blood. Everyone on the set could see that I had dozens of tiny wounds. Of course I dropped the bottle of champagne on my foot as well."

That askew/Escheresque set seems very similar to the nightmarish sets used in the antique horror classic, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caliari", so much so that I suppose this may have been directly inspired by it.

Nice job catching the connection between the song and Austin Powers. Mike Myers said film Austin Powers was partially inspired by "The Look of Love". He said hearing the song on the radio led to him reminiscing about the 1960s, which helped inspire the movie.

This is such a weird, muddled movie. The three impressive things about it are the "Look of Love" song, the theme song and introducing Woody Allen to the movie world. I always imagine everyone making this film was drunk, high, or both most of the time. It's the only explanation.

I was 6 when I first saw this and I loved it. Great soundtrack totally absurd now, but then just visually funny. Don't let the main James Bond, actor David Niven's portrayal influence you in any way about him as an actor. He made some truly classic movies. One being my number one film of all time. A Matter of Life and Death. And as you've stepped into the spy movie genre. I'd like to suggest you try The Ipcress File (1965) starring Michael Caine. Who you met before as Alfred in the Dark Knight trilogy.

Orson Wells apparently insisted on the magic being in this film. It is weird, wacky but not very satisfying to watch. I think all the behind the scenes drama, change of directors, people being fired is far more interesting than the actual film, which is also the case with Never Say Never Again.

Hi Jen! I love your determination to see all the Bond films, even the outliers like this Casino Royale. Ian Fleming (in the 1950s) wanted either David Niven or Cary Grant (North by North West) to play Bond. The James Bond movies inspired a load of mocking imitators in the UK, starting with The Beatles Help! (McCartney bought an Aston Martin right after Goldfinger) and including Modesty Blaise (Monica Vitti as a female Bond and the gorgeous Terence Stamp as her Bond Boy) and, funniest of all Otley with Tom Courtney as a hapless London chancer mistaken for a Bond. Len Deighton's The Ipcress File (written as a reaction to the flamboyant, glamorous focus of Fleming) focussed on low-level everyday spy work in London with Michael Caine as an anti-Bond hoping to earn a little extra so he can buy a car as he travels by bus, as we see! The Spy Who Came in From The Cold (Richard Burton) was an anti-spy movie based on authentic experience. All very Sixties movies as is Bond.

I also rate highly the 1961 black and white neo-noir gangster film The Frightened City set in London, in Soho and featuring Sean Connery as the heavy, but acting exactly like Bond except, as the bad guy, he turns into a wimp at the end. But if you want to see Connery demonstrating his Bond persona and charisma before Dr No this is the only film where you can see it!. Orson Welles and Peter Sellers hated each other to the point where the card-playing scene had to be filmed with each actor separately and merged later. Orson had some skill with stage magic and insisted he be given a chance to display it. It all came to a head after Peter began bragging that a member of the royal family was coming to see him on the set, (I want to say it was Princess Caroline) and when the day arrived, she walked right past him and straight to Orson Wells, as they were friends from childhood.

Okay, this seems to be the one kinda funny thing: When Lord Bond's daughter goes to Germany the following scenes are shot in the Expressionist style of early German silent movies, in particular "The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari".

A crazy mess of a film,multiple directors, dozens of well known faces,silly plot (especially towards end when they seem to be making up things as they go along),Sellers character just disappears for reason you said and he felt out with Orson Welles abd they were shot separately for scenes they had together in the casino...abd that's just the start.Very,very 60s...I love it!!.Peter O'Toole's cameo is a link to another silly 60s film-Whats New Pussycat?-when O'Toole has a similar exchange with Richard Burton...many of the film's familiar faces your probably too young to recognise (unlike me!)🎩

A bit of trivia: the great theme of casino royal was played by herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass. In the other non official bond “never say never again” the singer of the theme song was herb Alpert’s wife and that beautiful trumpet interlude was played by herb halpert. James Bond has to play Le Chifre at cards and defeat him, Le Chifre kidnaps Vesper. Bond is tied to a chair and tortured. - it's the same base plot as the novel and the Craig version. The execution is somewhat different though. :) Peter Sellers was sacked after the introduction of the car chase - you'll notice an abrupt jump in the film where the car chase should be.

OMG, How did I miss Jen reacting to this?!? For the original 007 spoof, stellar cast, and class soundtrack it's worth the watch. Directed by John Huston (M/MacTarry) with a sketchy Scots accent. For another terribly uncomfortable Peter Sellers lead in a Blake Edwards film, I dare you to react to THE PARTY (1968) co-starring Claudine Longet - I DOUBLE Dare you!

A couple of the actors in this movie played characters in the main Bond Films. For Example Le Chiffre's Representative (Vladek Sheybal) was in From Russia with Love as Chess Grandmaster Tov Kronsteen who works as Spectre Agent (No 5). Of course you know Ursula Andress who as you know Honey Ryder in Dr. No.

I've been waiting for somebody to watch this for soo long... There are one or two Italian-produced spoofs of James Bond films, and they actually star three os the main cast members of the Bond Series, playing their actual characters - M, Q, and Moneypenny! And, if they're the same films that I'm thinking of, they even got Sean Connery's real brother to play James Bond in them! How they did that & nobody was sued, is beyond me!

Another (less mad) James Bond curiosity is Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming, a biopic of the author, who had based some aspects of his original books on his own experiences in the British Secret Service. The title character is played by Jason Connery (Sean's son!) obviously!

I don't know how anyone could miss the plot. Throughout the Bond films the charter has been played by many actors. This movie explains how there could be so many 007's with the same name. Also the psychological neurosis of the "villain" is classic Freud. Now the chaotic ending is a jab at the old Hollywood trope of the Calvary arriving in the nick of time to save the day. I love this film. Love your reactions. U R absolutely wonderful.

M was played by John Huston, one of the 5 diectors of that movie, music is by Burt Bacharach, Sellers wanted to do a "serious" Bond movie but this one was a funny spoof!

Jen, you're a trooper for suffering through this. All the credit in the world to you. As I understand it, the reason Orson Welles did so much magic was because he liked magic in real life, so insisted on doing it in the movie. And Peter Sellers was very superstitious, so he didn't like it.

The other thing that happened was that Sellers and Welles took an instant and violent dislike to one another so they couldn't shoot the card game with both of them there at once. This wouldn't necessarily be an insurmountable problem but Sellers wouldn't say the lines that were written and made up his own in every take so they had to keep Welles around for a lot longer than planned to make sure they got a scene in the can that worked and the magic was added as a perk to keep him sweet. Then Sellers just didn't show up which led to him being fired so they had to make do with what they had.

Welles was pretty much Full of himself most of the time. There are some that have written he was deeply insecure about his own acting. He wanted to send the actors away and then he would shoot his own scenes. No one would be there except the camera crew" (Variety magazine). In short, he was stubborn and particular. Some might equate it with being a "tortured artist," but it wasn't uncharacteristic of Welles to extend those torturous tendencies to others.

In a way David Niven was more Bond than any other actor playing the role. During WW II former Sandhurst graduate Niven joined British Commandos and at the end of the war was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and received British Military Cross and Legion of Merit from US Armed Forces. He was fluent in French and German which allowed him to gather intelligence and communicate effectively with local populations. So we had a suave officer and gentleman collecting intelligence in real life.

The music is no John Barry, but it is by the legend that was Burt Bacharach and features the song The Look of Love (written by Bacharach and his lyricist Hall David), recorded by the equally legendary Dusty Springfield. Bacharach was a pop music giant, the easy listening side of the '60s and beyond.

This movie was made at the height of the 1960's psychedelia, bubblegum music, space age, jet-set, Summer of Love era. Life was pretty carefree (until the next year).

It is a difficult watch. This time period was very experimental: free love, psychedelic themes and unusual movies. I usually watch it for Barbara Bouchet and the main theme.

Jen, for the best of Peter Sellers, "A Shot in the Dark" is a must. It is his second as Inspector Clouseau . His first, of course being "Pink Panther". All are good up to "Trail of the ..." and " Curse of the ...". They were made after Seller's death, using outtakes and alternate footage in Trail, and bring in Roger Moore in a cameo as Clouseau with plastic surgery in Curse. Those two, as well as the other Panthers that followed are best left unwatched.

I was a kid learning to play trumpet when this came out. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass played the main theme. Herb was one of my trumpet inspirations at the time, so I like the movie for that. (He's still touring at 88. And he's the A in A&M Records.)
