I loved your reaction to this, Jen, I'm really glad that you enjoyed it so much. It's quite a good film with some great parts to it, a bit more tongue in cheek than other Bond films. About the situation, after Eon Productions (the official Bond film company) had done all the Bond films which they had secured the license to do based on the original Bond books, they were renegotiating for the rights to do more Bond films from Ian Fleming's estate, during this period they no longer had the solo rights to the characters or the Bond name so, it allowed another company to come in using the Bond name and other characters in a story, shortly after this the rights were granted to Eon Productions again so, it became illegal for another to then make a film based off the characters, Bond name, and any adaptations of the stories from the books. 'Never Say Never Again' was released in the same year as the official Bond film 'Octopussy'. I hope that this helps you to understand it a bit better, Jen?

@@jonathanross149 Not just her. I live in a smaller community in northern Ontario. Twenty years ago I was riding a bus to work with the same group of people every morning. One fellow had a sister that was re-marrying someone that she had dumped years before. They were making a big deal of getting back together, and had organized a "Destination Wedding" in the Bahamas or some place. My buddy was torn, but It was expensive, and he just could not afford it. His sister sent him pictures. On her way to the ceremony, she was in her dress on the elevator, and Sean Connery and his body guard got on. On a lark she invited them to the reception later, and they both showed up. My buddy was devastated, but sort of happy that he missed the whole thing, because he would have absolutely geeked out. Wedding or not.

The Blofeld in this was also portrayed by none other than Max von Sydow, whom you might remember as "the old priest" in The Exorcist. Apparently, Connery himself suggested von Sydow for the role of his arch-nemesis.

Glad you got to experience this unofficial Bond movie, Jen. It has actually aged better than some of the other Bond films. Apparently, Sean Connery's wife came up with the phrase "Never Say Never Again" during a conversation about Sean doing another Bond. Because the original film treatment of Thunderball was worked on by writer Ian Fleming and producer Kevin McClory, the rights to make further adaptations of the story fell to McClory, which allowed for this remake with Connery.

That's what I had heard too. I think budget restrictions and a hesitant Connery(despite his wink at the audience when "never say never again" plays) stopped the plans for an alternate Bond franchise to compete with the official Bond movies. The end battle scene set alone , for example, cost over a million dollars, which was apparently steep back then. Not that I have a million dollars just lying around. Darn it.

True but according to Wiki, McClory, Ian Fleming and Jack Whittingham all worked on the script for a project called LONGITUDE 78 WEST but it was deemed too expensive and was scrapped! Fleming alledgedly turned it into the novel THUNDERBALL without giving credit to McClory and Whittingham! McClory took Fleming to court! This was the start of the controversy!

Quite underated as a bond movie. Shame they never filmed the ending proposed by Connery. It would have involved him and Roger Moore walking past each other, with Roger turning around and saying "Never Say Never Again". Both actors wanted to do it and the director said nope :-(

They both agreed to meet at Roger home in LA and try to reach an understanding (this was after Never Say Never Again and Octopussy had come out). The first thing Cubby asked Sean about was an alleged quote from the 1970s where Connery said that if Cubby’s brains were on fire, he wouldn’t piss in the man’s ear to put it out. Sean responded angrily, “It’s not true, Cubby. I’ll piss in your ear any bloody time.” According to Roger, Cubby and Sean eventually reconciled because Cubby’s daughter Barbara (whom Connery always liked) asked Sean if he could visit her father before he passed. They apparently talked about their regrets regarding the Bond series and their happy memories of making Dr. No.

The sadistic videogame is very memorable - reminds me of Missile Command, but with electric shocks if any of your cities get destroyed "Bond meets villain and beats him at his own game" - it's a staple of most Bond films. But this is the only one where the villain has designed his own computer game. Still looks like an awesome 3D game even now.

The horses jumping over the cliff in this, and a horse scene in a film called Heavens Gate released about the same time actually died as a result. It led to the anti-cruelty in the arts act that led to films bearing the 'No animals were harmed in the making of this movie' card in many movie credit sequences since then.

The legal situation was Kevin McClory who was a producer on Thunderball, won a lawsuit against Ian Fleming, over the writing credit on Thunderball, and plagiarism I believe. As he won, he was entitled to make a Bond movie of his own, which was essentially a remake of Thunderball. I am glad you enjoyed this one, I do too, and pretty much for the same reasons it is like a classic Bond movie. The title comes from what Sean Connery said about playing Bond again.

What a cast! Klaus Maria Brandauer as Largo - a terrific and experienced German actor. Edward Fox as M - wonderful, wonderful. Watch him play the title role in The Day of the Jackal (the original one, not the remake). Oh boy. And then there’s Max von Sydow as Blofeld. He worked closely with Ingmar Bergman both in film and onstage. That alone gives him immense street cred. I once asked a very experienced director, "Who was the greatest actor of all time?" His answer: "You mean besides Max von Sydow?"

4:25 A little context: in the _Thunderball_ novel, the SPECTRE numbers were assigned at random and changed periodically to escape detection. At the time of the events of the novel, Blofeld was assigned No. 2 and his second in command Largo was No. 1. In the film series, this was changed to reflect rank. So Blofeld was referred to as No. 1 and Largo became No. 2. In _Never Say Never Again,_ they changed it back to the way it was done in the novels. So Largo is referred to as No. 1 here.

The guy who attacks Bond at the sanatorium is played by Pat Roach, legendary British stuntman. He was in the Indiana Jones movies, killed three times in Raiders (the guy in Marion's bar in Nepal who agrees to temporarily share a gun, the sword guy in Cairo, the Nazi that ends up propeller fodder), and once in Temple of Doom (Indian guard that ends up in the rock squasher). In Last Crusade, his fight with Indy was cut out, but he can be seen walking to the Zeppelin with Vogel, the Gestapo guy ("No ticket!").

I like that movie more than OCTOPUSSY, to be honest. It's a terrific send-off for Connery, who was in better shape than in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Max von Sydow as Blofeld was an unusual, but good choice. And Klaus-Maria Brandauer is a terrific villain. Love the title-song!

I liked it when I first saw it, but grew to LOVE IT! I missed the beginning and didn't realize Connery was playing a Bond close to retirement, which put a whole new spin on it for me! I think Sean looks more impressive here than in Diamonds Are Forever! I think he felt reinvigorated this time, especially in contributing to the script, while with "Diamonds..." he was just plain bored with the role! While not flawless ( John Barry or Jerry Goldsmith were sorely missed,) "Never Say Never., Again" is a delightful part of my "Connery Bond Classics" collection!

Enjoyed your presentation, Jen, very much. I’m glad you share my enthusiasm for this film. It did very well at the box office - slightly less than “Octopussy,” but received much better reviews. Kevin McClory and Sean Connery had been planning a Bond film since the mid-70s, collaborating on an original screenplay titled, “Warhead.” McClory owned the rights to “Thunderball” and other scripts. His agreement with Eon Productions allowed him to make his Bond films after 1976. But then Eon reneged on the deal, using all legal means to block him. The unsung hero was Jack Schwartzman, an entertainment lawyer who finally succeeded where McClory had failed. He bought the rights to “Thunderball” and enticed Connery to come back. In fact, he had to battle Eon in the London High Court even through the making of “Never Say Never Again.” For this old Bond fan, it was worth the wait. Connery was determined to go back to the “old style” Bond, where character and plot took precedence over gadgets and lavish sets. (His personal favourite was “From Russia With Love.”) He was more focused and enthusiastic, and in better shape than in his last two Eon films. He had final say over script and casting. I found this an intelligent, classy film, superior to that snooze-fest, “Thunderball.” My favourite Bond of all time is “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” I’d be interested in seeing your video on that. Connery was 53 when they made the film. Critics remarked about his age playing Bond again. Roger Moore was 3 years older though. Daniel Craig is 55, so it's funny they teased about Connery's age.

Connery is my second favorite Bond after Dalton. I am glad you finished the vintage bond films on a happier note after the terrible Casino Royal from 1967. Pat Roach played the assassin who tried to kill Bond at the clinic. He was known for playing large bad guys. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, he was both the giant sherpa that fought with Indy as well as the Nazi who got too close the propeller. In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, he was the chief guard who got too close the the rock crusher.

Jen, I LOVED "Diamonds Are Forever" and so I saw it multiple times but I NEVER had the impression that Sean Connery did not want to be there. I'm thinking that hearing that he had to be sweet talked into returning perhaps gave a subconscious predisposition to think that way. BTW 'Diamonds Are Forever' became an advertising slogan for a diamond jewelry advertiser subsequently!

Never Say Never Again This is the last time Sean Connery plays James Bond and of course, it’s not in the franchise! In 1983 Octopussy was released in June before Never Say Never Again which came out in October of that year! Here, the score was written by French jazz musician Michel Legrand and the tittle song sung by Lani Hall, Herb Alpert’s wife! Incidentally, Alpert played the theme tune to the 1967 version of Casino Royale which was scored by Burt Bacharach! Now, in the opening sequence when Bond saves the girl in an exercise and she supposedly kills him because of the Stockholm syndrome, the girl is in fact a famous stuntwoman called Wendy Leech daughter of Stuntman George Leech! She performed stunts in For Your Eyes Only as well Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough! Now, before going any further I must admit that my favourite scene in this film is when Bond fights the henchman in the health clinic and almost being overpowered by him in the laboratory, he picks up a glass beacon of liquid and throws it into the henchman’s face who immediately screams out of pain and when Bond looks at the label on the beacon he reads ‘James Bond’s urine’ and that is really funny! I love it! A small comment I need to put in here concerning the SPECTRE lair! When we see Fatima Blush go through the lasers then enter the secret room I expected something like the SPECTRE lair in Thunderball, a huge room with electrified seats and an ingenious antagonistic Blofeld! Instead, she enters a Victorian living-room with a disappointing Blofeld even though I respect and admire Max Von Sydow as a brilliant actor, remember Quiller Memorandum and of course The Exorcist! But, here, I just don’t see him in this role! Now, Largo, who in Thunderball looked more like a Mafia drug lord and pretty board at that, even though, again, Adolfo Celi was a brilliant actor, here, Largo, even with another Christian name, is really is fantastic! Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer - Out Of Africa - is truly into this role with even a touch of madness! And as for Fatima Blush who’s even more crazy than Largo is a fantastic character, especially with her snake and to my mind, much more of a crazy assassin than Fiona Volpe who was really good for her time though a little stiff all the same! That being said Luciana Paluzzi was an excellent actress but wasn’t given the same material to work with as Barbara Carrera, who incidentally turned down the offer to star in Octopussy for that of Never Say Never just to be able to star opposite Sean Connery! There are two different ways for Bond to tell Domino that her brother is dead! In Thunderball it’s after a romantic dive in the Bahamas and he tells her in a delicate manner! Here, he tells her bluntly while dancing a tango! Times do change! When Largo tells Bond that the first bomb is under the White House, how the hell did that happen? Nobody can even approach White House especially workman who would be digging around and underneath it to place a bomb! And if you remember Goldfinger when he explains to Bond that the LITTLE atomic device could be detected anywhere on arriving on American soil and there, we’re in 1964! Would it really be possible to NOT detect a bomb being placed under the White House in 1983? I don’t think so! But there again we’re in the James Bond universe even out of franchise so, I suppose anything is possible! Let’s say Everything Or Nothing is possible, wink wink! And they’re not even involved! I have to point out that the stunt with Bond and Domino jumping off the fortress on a horse, had a dramatic ending! The stunt was pulled off by stuntman Tony Cyrus but unfortunately the horse didn’t survive! Near the end, we have, once more a direct reference Thunderball! We know it’s the same story but here and there, there are particular Easter Eggs such as the Navy XT-7B which of course, reminds us of the jet pack in the pre-title sequence of Thunderball! Of course, at the end Domino kills Largo and the world is saved! But the very end scene when Mr. Bean, euh sorry Nigel Small-Fawcett, literally drops in-to the pool asking Bond to come back and save the world and he answers never again I think that too is pretty cool! Love the wink at the end on the title song, which I admit, I like too! On the whole, I quite enjoyed this version of Thunderball! It’s true tht te original is much closer to the book and flows a bit better as it has been said but the time period was different as well as the budget! What I didn’t like was the SPECTRE room and Max Von Sydow didn’t seem to know what to do with the cat contrary to Anthony Dawson whom I suspect, probably had cats of his own! In fact he seemed to be the only Blofeld who seemed to know how to treat one and don’t forget, his voice was dubbed by Eric Pohlmann still, to a certain extent I did enjoy Never Say Never Again, especially Fatima Blush!

Any Bond with Connery is a great Bond, JennyPenny. He took this film because he loved the original book and thought the older film script (Thunderball) was too far removed. Kim Basinger is just divine (you should watcvh LA Confidential to see her act as well as look good). I would recommend watching the Flint films (Our Man Flint & In Like Flint) and the IPCRESS File before Austin Powers to get the full effect. The Matt \Helm movies wouldn't be out of place either.

Fun review as always! NSN is a direct (if unsanctioned) remake of Connery's 007 opus THUNDERBALL (1965)--and this is not by accident, as producer/story writer Kevin McClory still owned the rights to certain aspects of this movie (and THUNDERBALL). So, in 1983--the same year that Moore's 007 film OCTOPUSSY was released--we got two Bonds.. This one is a fun romp in an alt-universe with the eternal 007 Sean Connery eating the role up! Thanks for screening NSN in its correct Panavision aspect ratio...

The title _Never Say Never Again_ stemmed from a joke from Connery's wife. After he did _Diamonds Are Forever,_ Connery was asked if he would ever do another Bond film. To which Connery replied "Never again!" The title of this movie kinda works in the context of Bond getting old and grey and semi-retired, finally getting brought back into service.

I'm glad you watched this one... I always liked it. I don't really understand the hate it gets. It's actually the first Connery film that I watched as a kid. I didn't see his other films till I was in college, and I love those too. I think you're right, this one is better than Diamonds Are Forever, so I'm glad that he came back and did one more.

Yes I liked it, I'm glad Connery came back and did it, unofficial or not. Thunderball is my favorite Bond film, and I thought they did a good job of remaking this one, updating it and making it different enough that it stands on it's own. You can really see the contrast between Connery and Roger Moore with the 2 Bond films that came out that year. "Octopussy" was a lot of fun, but "Never Say Never Again" had that edge that Connery brought to the role. Looking forward to the other Austin Powers reactions. Not so much to the Daniel Craig Bonds. He had everything needed to be a great Bond, but they turned him into Jason Bourne light.

Fun Facts: • Sean Connery tried to persuade *"SUPERMAN"* director Richard Donner to direct the film, but after Donner read the script and disliked it, he said "No". They then asked Peter Hunt (who was the editor of the first five Bond films and directed the sixth film: *"On Her Majesty's Secret Service")* to direct the film, but out of respect for EON, he declined the offer. • Director Irvin Kershner & producer Jack Schwartzman's choice of composer was James Horner after they were impressed with his work on *"STAR TREK II: The Wrath of* *Khan",* but - according to Schwartz-man - Connery vetoed the choice. They then approached frequent Bond film composer John Barry to do the score, but out of respect for EON, he too declined the offer.

- 10:17 - A couple of years before 'Never Say Never Again' Barbara Carrera (playing Fatima Blush) was in a combo spy movie and superhero movie called 'Condorman' made by Disney. The movie had her as a defecting Soviet agent. The one who was to help her was a comic book illustrator-writer who created a character called Condorman, which he used as his cover. Condorman was played by Michael Crawford (later famous as the first Phantom of the Opera for Andrew Lloyd Webber in London, NYC, and LA, and also as the singing voice of the songs "It Only Takes A Moment" and "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" in 'Wall-E'...which were from his role as Cornelius in the movie musical 'Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand). - Max Von Sydow with the cat is playing Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Klaus Maria Brandauer plays Largo (the same character played by Adolfo Celi in 'Thunderball'), and Kim Basinger is Domino (taking over from Claudine Auger). Barbara Carrera's Fatima Blush is just renamed from Fiona Volpe, played by Luciana Paluzzi in 'Thunderball'. Bernie Casey played Felix Leiter. - This was the first film directed by Irvin Kershner after the success of 'Star Wars - Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back' in 1980. He would do only one more big-screen film in 1990...'RoboCop 2'. Rowan Atkinson was more likely doing 'Blackadder' at the moment he made this, but still...I think this was one of his very first big-screen roles. Hi Jen. That assassin at the health resort was the same guy who got into 3 fistfights(in 3 different roles) with Indiana Jones-The Sherpa in Marion's bar and the German flying wing mechanic(Raiders of the Lost Ark) and the head Thugee children slave master(Temple of Doom).

Klaus Maria Brandauer (Largo) was and is a respected German theater actor. He had no interest in playing the villain in a Bond film. Connery convinced him with the sentence "We're going to have a lot of fun and make a lot of money." And Brandauer still says today "He was right." 😅

Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) has his own spy series - Johnny English. They are pretty funny, so toss them on a list when you feel the need for more spy comedy. He's also the central character in every season of Blackadder, a British comedy series where each season is a different period of history.

Yes, I highly recommend checking out Blackadder, a classic British comedy series. It should be pointed out that the first season is the worst one, and a newcomer should probably start with season 2, the best one.

When this came out, I did not know it was unofficial and OUT from under the franchise umbrella. Not long into it I could see it was a retelling of THUNDERBALL, but I liked it much better. I used to live in the Bahamas, but rarely got to Nassau town. Seeing these old views of the harbor is so nostalgic (so much has changed). The cast here is stellar. Max Von Sydow must see films are THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (Paramount Pictures, 1975), and FLASH GORDON (Universal Pictures, 1980). For a great Barbara Carrera film with a very young Patrick Dempsey, watch LOVERBOY (Tristar Pictures, 1989) - so hilarious with another great cast. Favorite Connery films include THE NAME OF THE ROSE (Columbia Pictures, 1986), FAMILY BUSINESS (TriStar Pictures, 1989), MEDICINE MAN (Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, 1992), and ENTRAPMENT (20th Century Fox, 1999). Love your reactions and especially gushing over Sean-baby, so give his other good ones a whirl!

I was aware of James Bond films, I was 12 at the time and you don't forget names like Moonraker and Octopussy. I didn't get it. Then, I saw this in the theater and it really introduced me to the James Bond world. For some, it's the red-headed stepchild of the Bond series. For me, it kicked off my love for Bond.

That horse was only dropped a few feet into the water (the top portion of the fall is an optical effect), but it was NOT happy about it at all. This was mostly because getting it in position was awkward and took too long, so it made the horse quite nervous. Animal rights groups weren't very pleased, either. The short version of the history of this movie's rights battle (As I Understand It) is that Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was friends with a man named Ivor Bryce, who was acquainted through his wife with a man name Kevin McClory. Fleming enlisted McClory to produce the first Bond Film. McClory didn't think any of the stories worked for film, so McClory, Bryce, Fleming, and a Jack Whittingham worked on a new screenplay that could be the first movie. Bryce and Flemming later pushed McClory out of the production, claiming he had no rights to any of the material they worked on. The screenplay did NOT end up being the first Bond film, but Fleming turned the script into a full novel and published it under the name Thunderball, without giving McClory or Whittingham any credit. McClory and Whittingham teamed up to sue over it and won. In addition to the monetary awards, all of the Thunderball novels after that had to be credited to McClory, Whittingham, and Fleming... In That Order (sick burn). Also, everyone else in the project gave over the film rights for Thunderball to McClory. He also ended up with S.P.E.C.T.R.E. and Blofeld as his intellectual property, which is why they vanished from later Bond films. Eon Productions, the company of the Broccoli family, who had the Bond film rights, made a deal with McClory to turn Thunderball into a movie (part of the deal being that McClory couldn't make another Thunderball adaptation for 10 years). After that 10 years was up, though, that's exactly what he set out to do. Some of these adaptation attempts fell through, and some were attempted to be blocked by certain parties, until the courts told them to sit down and shut up, permanently. Flashback to the early Bond movies: Connery had a contract with the film studio, for his work as James Bond, BEFORE the films blew up and James Bond became a silver screen sensation. He was making truckloads of money for all of the executives behind the movies but none for himself; no matter how much money the Bond movies made, he was still just making the same (relatively small) amount he did for the first one. I don't think he was even getting a piece of the merchandise, like some of the Star Wars actors. This lead to Connery being very angry and bitter toward the people for whom he was working. He was replaced by Lazenby, who quit after one movie because his agent told him Bond was quickly going out of style. Connery came back to do Diamonds Are Forever, then said he would never do another Bond movie (hence the title Never Say Never Again). Years later, McClory licensed the rights to make a Thunderball movie to another person, and that person made Never Say Never Again. Because they offered Connery fat stacks of cash, let him have a say in things like the music and other aspects of production, he agreed to be in the film. This gave NSNA a lot more legitimacy in the eyes of the public, given that it was sort of a bootleg Bond film. Also, because McClory didn't own the rights to them, they couldn't use the gun barrel opening, nor the famous Bond theme music. Never Say Never Again was in theaters during the same year as Octopussy, in a much-publicized "Battle of The Bonds." I would say the real winners were Bond fans, who got a double dose of their favorite secret agent that year. McClory went on to try and make other adaptations of Thunderball, including a cartoon. The cartoon fell through, and the cartoon series James Bond Jr. was made by Eon, in part, to spite him. When Sean Connery starred in NSNA, it had been over a decade since he had played Bond, but I think he looks great: Maybe better than he did in Diamonds Are Forever, and a darn sight happier to be there. I'm sure part of that was because he felt like he was finally being paid what he deserved, and was being shown due respect, since they put him in a position to influence and give his opinion on other aspects of the production. As a standalone piece of music, I do like the theme song.

I'm glad you liked it. People get a bit too silly about it not being an official Bond movie. It's a Bond movie with the original 007, which should be enough for anyone. I also think this one influenced other Bonds such as Goldeneye with the henchwoman and pen. I think there was a laser watch in one of the newer Bonds too...
