Speaking of "James Bond doesn't sweat" in real life, when Sean Connery was making a movie with Lana Turner, her mobster boyfriend got jealous and showed up on the movie set and pulled a gun on Connery. The Art work he looks at at dinner was a famous stolen Painting it is why Bond gave it a Look. The best Part of Dr No is that it had no Budget . They found a way to make a extremally good movie .Also Bond Broke a lot of "good guy rules" He shot a man that was out of ammunition, then to make sure he was dead he shot him in the back. Sex with a person he knew was working for the wrong side then just handing her over. Dr No broke all the rules and it took a while for it to be a Hit . But when people found out about it .It became a Blockbuster

I've heard that disputed though. Supposedly Norman was contracted to write the music but he never delivered. Good reaction. I remember when Dr. No was released. Hard to believe it was 60 years ago. It's difficult to explain to those who were not around at the time how sensational these first Bond movies were in the early 1960's. In my opinion Joseph Wiseman, as Dr. No, was the best Bond Villain. His voice was so sinister. And you were right. Everyone thought Connery was "hunky". All the guys wanted to be Bond and all women wanted to be conquered by him. And when you say "He slept with her knowing that she set him up", that pretty much defines 007. I recommend you see the first four Bond films with Connery as 007. Sean Connery was 32 when this film was made.

I’m so glad you are getting into the spirit of the early Bond films. Objectively, they are bonkers, and don’t entirely age well. But they’re fun if you don’t try to make them make sense. If you liked “Dr. No,” you will probably LOVE then next film in the series, “From Russia With Love.” I’d say it’s twice as good. One bit of trivia I think is also relevant to the early Bond movies - in the early ‘60s, the UK was JUST getting over a post WWII period of recovery. The war was so hard on the UK that they had rationing of lots of everyday items, like food and fuel, well after the war was actually won. So one of the appeals of the Bond books and movies was seeing a debonair British spy who lived an expensive lifestyle, (private club, gambling, the finest drinks and clothes), and traveled by jet to exotic places, like Jamaica and Europe. That wow factor became less of a thing of course, but early on it really helped make the Bond stories extra popular.

Not just that, Britain had pretty much lost what was left of their Empire. It was a blow to their national ego that they weren't the same kind of super-power nation they had been before the world wars and James Bond was a comforting fantasy about how Britain could still covertly police the world.

Ian Fleming only ever saw the first two bond movies. He died in 1964 a couple of months before the 3rd film Goldfinger was released. It wasn’t until the 11th novel, also published in 1964 (and the last published in Flemings lifetime. Some were published posthumously) that Bonds ancestry was fully revealed to be a Scottish Father and Swiss Mother.

_From Russia with Love,_ which is next, is the film that follows the novel the most closely. It is a proper espionage film rather than a super-spy movie. Also, it was Albert Broccoli's favorite. Here are some interesting differences from the novel: In the novel Dr. No's mining operation is not bauxite (an aluminum ore) but guano, which is more valuable. No doesn't die in the reactor pool, he escapes the explosion and runs to a dock where one of his freighters is loading guano. He and Bond fight, No falls to the dock, and the conveyor loading guano swings from over the ship's hold to over No and he dies by being buried in bird shit. When Honey Ryder comes out of the surf she is naked except for her diving belt, which movies couldn't show in 1963. When she sees Bond she covers herself with her hands. In the novel she is described as having a very prominent nose that she thinks is unattractive, so instead of adopting the usual pose of hands covering breasts and groin she covers her breasts and her nose.

Seeing them all in order is actually a great way to watch the evolution of big-budget action movies and the image of a "man's man." The character who wears the coolest clothes, drives the coolest cars, goes to the coolest places must necessarily evolve as the culture and what is or isn't cool changes over *six decades* of movies that are still breaking box office records. On the other hand, there are certain aspects of cool that were defined by this character and have become a permanent part of how we think of coolness. The tone of the movies veer wildly as well, catering to the mood of the audience at the time. It goes through a drug-fueled hallucinatory self-parody phase in the 70's that may not necessarily be considered *good* movies, but still have to be seen. I'd love to hear your commentary on all of these through the years. I think you're going to enjoy all of them, all for different reasons.

So glad that you liked this movie. I hope you keep going with the rest of the series. Each Bond actor brings their own flavor to the character. I honestly think most Bond movies are worth watching, if you liked this one (which you did). There's 25 Bond movies in the official series (one unofficial remake and a parody also exist). The thing with the Bond series is that everyone likes something different, so even if I were to recommend you a few movies from each Bond actor to watch, other people would likely choose a different list, so if you have the time and are patient enough, I'd say watch em all. That way you can also see how Bond (and the world in general) evolves from 1962-now.

Sean Connery was 32 here. According to legend, he didn’t impress the producers during the auditions for the role. They wanted Cary Grant for Bond. And here was this young Scottish former milkman and bodybuilder, and he had turned up in scruffy clothes. But then they watched him leave andnwalk down the street from the window of their building, and commented on how he “moved like a panther in the street”, and thus secured the role. The rest is history.

I remember when I was there years ago our guide was telling us that one of the worst deals the Jamaican government ever made was a trade deal with Russia. Instead of selling the bauxite, the government agreed to a trade deal for Russian automobiles. "These autos had a very bad reputation, but the government made the deal anyway." the guide told us. "But, even now, decades later, you can still see some of these same cars on our roads." He pointed to a boxy shape on the shoulder of the road at this point as we drove past. It seemed to be made out of rust and vines. "See?" he said. "There's one now." 😀

Of COURSE he went there. She set him up. He expected it. Now he is in a prime position to find out who had her set him up and why because she's surprised to see him. He's a spy. Take risks and do the unexpected because when you shock and surprise someone by being where they don't expect you to be, they're off balance and more likely to say too much. It's how I got confirmation that my wife was cheating on me. Well, my ex-wife now.

Watch all the original Connery ones in order. Amusingly they are numbers 1-5 and 7. They are excellent for what they are, which might be considered fairly predictable spy fare. Ian Fleming, the author of these stories as well as the children's book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, was a spy back in the day, so he had a good handle on what Cold War era spycraft looked like, and so he knew how to use the truth and take it at least bit over the top for the story's sake. Connery was the best Bond, although the one-shot Bond George Lazenby (who was in the sixth Bond film) looked most like Bond as he was depicted in the original stories. Roger Moore was a good Bond, though he had to deal with a lot of less than stellar scripts. Those three are the "classic era" Bonds. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were the "middle era" Bonds and while they had better scripts than many of Moore's, they couldn't match Connery. I know nothing much about the Daniel Craig "Late era" Bond, other than his movies just weren't interesting enough to hold my attention for long. I've seen most of Craig's first two piecemeal, but I just didn't enjoy them. My favorite Connery film is Thunderball (his fourth movie), and my favorite Moore film is Live and Let Die (his first movie).

Ahh, this young woman has finally discovered James Bond... Wait until she sees the famous lines... Bond: "Do you expect me to talk?" Villain: "No Mr Bond, I expect you to die". ........ as a high powered lazer beam is preparing to cut Bond in half length wise from the bottom up! And for the rest of the great one-liners!!!!! Welcome to James Bond, young lady! You don't know it yet, but after you've made it through many of them, you will have to choose who is your favorite Bond actor. My favorite is, of course, Sean Connery.

My late father, born in 1941, said that of all the actors to play Bond, only Sean Connery gave the impression that he could be trusted with a license to kill. If you're unaware, at one time the British intelligence services issued certain agents (portrayed as the double-0 agents in this film series) a "license to kill." That meant they were free to kill anyone, for any reason, and the agent would face no consequences. They had to be trustworthy enough to kill only when necessary, but also absolutely ruthless when necessary. At age 57, after so many Bonds, I now agree with my father. I'd only trust Connery's Bond with a license to kill.

A few notes: 1.Originally at the end of the Dr. No when you saw it in the theatre, as we went to the closing credits it read 'The End of Dr. No but James Bond will be Back in From Russia With Love" but for some reason that was removed from all versions of the movie you see today. 2. Dr. No although a small movie by later Bond standards still ;looks impressive, particularly Dr. No's villain's lair. This was the work of the great academy award winning Production designer Ken Adam who did most of the sets on the Bond movies through 1979s Moonraker. By using paper walls on sets (!) he managed to make Dr. No on a tiny budget of about $1 million dollars (recent Bonds cost $250-300 million). If you watch the first five movies in a row you can see their budgets increase every time through You Only Live Twice which is a true visual spectacle marched only by The Spy Who Loved Me. 3. The hat toss in the office continues through the 1st 6 movies (with TWO in On Her Majesties Secret Service)- and then returns in the early 80s with For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy.Oh, and Ms. Murray you asked if "Bond"i and Moneypenny ever kiss- well you'll want to see nearly at the end of Bond #20 Die Another Say there's a scene with Moneypenny where- you'll have to see it for yourself! Yours in Bondage ! (that's what they used to call the fan club newsletter!)

I'd love for you to continue with 007. I really like the first 3: Dr No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger (often regarded as the best). Bond fans love to compare eras, so I recommend watching at least one from each actor. The best of Roger Moore are probably The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only. Most ppl don't like the Timothy Dalton movies, but I like The Living Daylights. For Pierce Brosnan, I prefer Tomorrow Never Dies with Michelle Yeoh and I like Daniel Craig's 1st, Casino Royale with Eva Green, though Judy Dench is fantastic in Skyfall. Quality has gone up and down over the years. While there's a certain amount of "camp" in most of them, the late 70s and 80s tended to be over-the-top, esp Moonraker. Finally, George Lazenby played a very different Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service with Diana Rigg. It's a much more emotionally complex character, very different from the smooth and dashing Bond that most of them have played. It's not the best script, but I thought the character was very interesting.

Jen, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Pretty Please do all of the Bond films!!! For me, personally, only the Star Wars films hold a higher place in my heart...and there are MANY franchises I love. So, thank you for this one! One of Sean Connery's first jobs as an actor was as one of the sailors (or Seabees) in the original London production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical 'South Pacific ', in which he would sing "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame" with a bunch of other men in the chorus. One of his first films was a live-action Disney musical called "Darby O'Gill and the Little People '. Add to the fact that Bond, in the novels, likes to sing or hum pretty openly as a character trait. So, yeah, Bond sings a bit. As for Jamaica, Ian Fleming would go to his home there to write each Bond novel. It was called Goldeneye...which was also the name of the first Pierce Brosnan outing as 007. The inspiration for the character came from many places. Ian Fleming was with British Intelligence during WWII, as was his cousin...actor, Christopher Lee (Count Dooku himself!). Many of Christopher Lee's missions during the war are still classified, as are Fleming's. Lee was an inspiration for Bond, and Fleming wanted Lee to play Dr. No. Lee did play a Bond villain, however, opposite Roger Moore's 007 as Francisco Scaramanga aka 'The Man With The Golden Gun '. The name of the character came from a real book Fleming had called 'Birds of the West Indies ' by James Bond, an ornithologist. He wanted the most boring name possible...now it's one of the coolest names possible! The Bond Films in order: Sean Connery (1): (1962-1967)Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice George Lazenby: (1969) On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Definitely one of the best stories of all the films) Sean Connery (2): (1971) Diamonds are Forever (You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and Diamonds Are Forever are the Blofeld Trilogy...you'll see) Roger Moore: (1973-1985) Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View To A Kill Timothy Dalton: (1987-1989) The Living Daylights and License To Kill Pierce Brosnan: (1995-2002) Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day Daniel Craig: (2006-2021) Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, No Time To Die There are a few unofficial Bond films, especially 'Never Say Never Again' (1983) which brought Connery back to the role, and was NOT produced by EON Productions...there is a whole legal story with that one. It is a fun movie, but very odd. Also...for the die-hard Bond fans of Connery's era is 'The Rock' (1996) directed by Michael Bay, starring Connery, Nicholas Cage, and Ed Harris. It is not, technically, a Bond film...but there is a really persuasive fan theory that Connery's character in the film named John Mason is actually James Bond, as the timeline of the Connery Bond films and world events eerily line up. This is also based on Connery's performance, as well as dialogue cues by many other characters in the film. There is a great video that explains it in detail on KZbin.

Howdy, Jen! 🤠 There are three versions of "Casino Royale" and I see two in your list, the second and third ones! The first one predates, "Dr. No"! It was an episode in an anthology series on "CBS" that was preserved for posterity via kinescope. Your list includes Ursula Andress as two different "Bond Babes"! You include the "Austen Powers" movies that were inspired by the second "Casino Royale"! Missing is George Lazenby's second time as "JB"! He's a guest in "The Return of the Man from UNCLE"! 😎

Another great reaction, Jen. Yes, please do react to other 'Bond' films, the ones that I suggest are: 'From Russia with Love', 'Thunderball' and 'Goldfinger' (these are the best of the Sean Connery ones, in my opinion); 'Live and Let Die', 'The Man with The Golden Gun' and 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (these are the best of the Roger Moore years); 'The Living Daylights' and 'Licence to Kill' (these are the two by Timothy Dalton); 'GoldenEye', 'Die Another Day" and 'The World is Not Enough' (these are the best of the Pierce Brosnan films); then you have Daniel Craig's 'Bond', you can also react to 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' with George Lazenby if you want to, this isn't one of the best 'Bond' films, but it does give you important background to the character of Bond so, for that reason it might be worth reacting too. Anyway, I hope that you find these suggestions useful, obviously the choices of the films are from my opinion, others might disagree, but on the whole I think that they're the best ones.

Ian Fleming was really writing about himself in British intelligence in WW II. England survived the war in shambles of it's former empire. The Bond books sold to please the egos of the Brits to say we still have people in the Cold War game hidden from view. Britain is not out of the game yet. Americans liked it too as did President JFK, who was a avid fan. The 007, is based on the Soviet NKVD, that assigned 00 numbers to it's assassins. Fleming thought the Brits must still have a few special agents so licensed. The 00 means they have killed in the line of service before and are authorized to kill again as need becomes apparent. Bond was just number 7, so there were others. So 007 is his prefix number.

Although the movies before Craig don't really have much continuity, I personally think it would still be beneficial to watch them in order, especially if you enjoy them. Bond is a great time capsule and a very reactionary franchise. Every movie has been influenced by what the current movie trends were, as well as how the previous Bond movie performed. 25 movies will take some time I admit, but still less than MCU for example. My personal minimum recommendation/wish-list of Bond movies would be Dr No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger from Connery. The Spy Who Loved me and For Your Eyes Only from Roger Moore. Both Living Daylights and License to Kill from Timothy Dalton. GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies from Pierce Brosnan. Due to some overarching plot-lines cherry picking from the Craig era won't really work.

I enjoyed watching this movie reaction with you. I like your mind, you pick up on things pretty quickly. Dr.No is one of my favourite films, it's the film which started the trend, so it was kind of make or break and at that time no one could imagine what a hit it would be or that years later the trend still continues. There is a scene in Dr.No's lair where Bond pauses to look at a painting, that's because at the time of filming a famous painting was stolen, I believe from an art gallery, and it was a big mystery as to where it was and who stole it. It was a cute idea to show a copy of the painting in Dr.No's lair with the idea that Dr.No stole it. That's just a minor fun detail in this film, if you blink you may miss it. Sean Connery was my favourite James Bond, one, because he was the original, but also because he played it cool, tough and with a sense of humour. Connery was so good in this role that his character became believable. I later also liked Timothy Dalton and then Daniel Craig. Roger Moore was also very good. I am one year late for this comment having only just come across your videos, I will watch your other videos. I am curious to see how you liked the other Bond films.
