One of the greatest chase scenes in history, Daniel Craig really nailed the character James Bond but even so Sean Connery is the absolute definition of Bond..James Bond. This franchise is a breath of fresh air from all those super hero movies made today ad nauseum.
@bighuge1060
@bighuge1060 3 жыл бұрын
Connery was more suave than Ian Fleming's Bond but he had that wonderfully detached ruthlessness when needed. If I remember correctly, Fleming's Bond was more of a rough man; that "blunt instrument". Connery was that by way with a Hugh Hefner Playboy spark. I'm also so with you on the superhero oversaturation situation.

As a massive Bond fan (and a Brit haha) this is my favourite Bond film. As a reboot to the franchise and the first actual origin story of Bond it's genius. The opening scene in black and white showing his kills to earn him 00 status ending in that absolute god-tier gun barrel opening. The fact that they don't use the main theme until the END of the film. Also worth noting the negative reaction when Craig was announced as Bond... how wrong that initial reaction was! Enjoy this incredible franchise. This may be my favourite but there are so many phenomenal films here.

A couple of things to point out about this movie if you’ve never seen a Bond movie before. This movie plays with several of the James Bond tropes. The opening of Bond movies almost always have a cold open, a shot of Bond down a gun barrel, the James Bond Theme, and then a music video showcasing the song for the movie. During the movie he’ll go to exotic locales, seduce exotic women, wear a tux, escape certain death, ask for a Martini - shaken not stirred, and tell someone his name, “Bond, James Bond”. In Casino Royale the movie is really about Bond becoming James Bond (007 licensed to kill secret agent.) They play with this, like when the bar tender asks if he wants his Martini shaken or stirred and he says, “do I look like I give a damn.” He’s not Bond yet. M calls him a blunt instrument and doesn’t fully trust him in the first half of the movie. They do a really interesting thing with the music. We almost never hear the Bond theme. It’s not in the opening and most of the time you think you are hearing it it’s actually Chris Cornell’s You Know My Name which incorporates a bit of the theme. The only time we actually hear it are when James is doing something particularly Bind like. We hear it in the background when he arrives at his first exotic location and again when he’s shocked back to life at the car. It’s not until the end of the movie when we finally hear the full song and the famous “Bond, James Bond” line. He knows about betrayals, he knows who to trust, he’s got the bad guy where he wants him and he’s now the James Bond of the previous 20 movies.
@RichardX1
@RichardX1 2 жыл бұрын
@Gary Allen But there's no gin in Bond's drink. It's a VODKA martini (which you can debate elsewhere whether or not that's a real martini anyway). Apparently vodka doesn't react to shaking the way gin does. Also, an intelligence agent like Bond, who needs to keep his wits about him, would probably appreciate the increased dilution of the alcohol.

The second Daniel Craig Bond film Quantum Of Solice is widely regarded as a weak movie, but the opening pre title sequence begins one hour after this movie ends. When watched back to back, you realize that Quantum of Solace isn't really supposed to be a full sequel. It's main purpose is to tie up the story threads left by Casino Royale. The reason it's regarded as weak is because it relies heavily on the first movie for its narrative footing. Watching them back to back, I loved QoS as companion movie to Casino Royale. A more appropriate title for the movie would have been Casino Royale: The Epilogue.

Quantum of Solace had quite a few things going against it even before the movie came out. The studio not only didn’t have the rights to “Spectre” at the time (hence the organization’s name “Quantum”), but there was a writer’s strike involving their writers, so the filmmakers on set had to wing it for a while.

The main titles for Bond films are arguably one of the last places in modern cinema where, as a musician, you get an entire song to yourself on celluloid. Don't forget, this series dates back to the 1960's, where credit sequences were more front-loaded. Even in, for instance, Diamonds Are Forever (1971), the end titles are still fairly short, and are there to credit stuff that would have been spoiler-ish if they'd run over the opening titles. So, fast forward to the 80's and 90's: most feature film credits were moved to the end titles, so Bond's extensive opening numbers were getting anachronistic...but by then, MTV had established music videos as mainstream. And that's when you started seeing pop acts like Duran Duran, a-ha, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Gladys Knight, and (more recently) Adele and Sam Smith, backing the main titles for Bond films. So, what began as convention, soon became tradition, aided by an unexpected turn of popular media.

Spectre in 4k!!! The Daniel Craig era re-defined the Bond movies. Gritty and human combined with action. Quantum of Solace is next. Skyfall and Spectre are as perfect as Casino Royale. Follow the white rabbit!

The cool thing about the last hand of poker is that Bond knew he was gonna win, he just silently using body language and microexpressions made Le Chiffre think he was repeating his earlier mistake, lulling Le Chiffre into calling Bond’s all in, pretending like his hand was worse than it really was by subliminally communicating to Le Chiffre that he thought he was bluffing again.

every generation has their bond, when I was a kid Sean Connery was leaving and Roger Moore was coming in so when I think bond I see Roger Moore. I grew up watching Pierce Brosnan on Remington steel which is a very bond-like character. so when he took the role it was a natural fit also his first bond film was Golden eye, which was amazing, the same director as Casino Royale. Martin Campbell is a great action director you should watch all his movies.

I look forward to seeing your reactions on the rest of the Craig films and hopefully go back and try some of the classics too. I realize it's usually a generational thing with who you grew up watching, but for me, even tho he was before my time, Sean Connery will ALWAYS be the man. RIP Sir Sean.
