As much as I love the older films, I can admit that they are a bit of a tough sell for more modern audiences - they're rather slow-paced, there's a reliance on campy comedy, and there's a lot of content that has not aged well at all. I reckon a reactor new to the series would probably be better off starting with the Craig era, or possibly the Brosnan era, and then working their way back if they're interested in doing so

@@christianwise637 the Moore movies relied on campy comedy. The older movies are a tough sell for "modern audiences" because their Ritalin adled brains need a constant stream of crash-bang-boom to keep their attention, regardless of what it is.

As an old Bond fan, I was really glad to see they dropped the campy humor with these. They kept the corny lines here and there, but the camp was just getting out of control. It was wearing extremely thin by the last 2 Brosnan films. To the point where they felt almost like parodies.

Vesper’s dialogue in the dinner scene after Bond wins is fascinating. She says, "You've got a choice, you know. Just because you've done something, it doesn't mean that you have to keep doing it." On the surface, she's talking about Bond being an agent and killing people, but the subtext for her is she's talking about betraying her government and by extension, Bond. She's already in love with him, and she's having to deal with the realities of her situation. It was easy for her to betray her government when it was just a faceless institution, but it's much more difficult for her now that she deeply cares about someone personally victimized by her betrayal. By saying that Bond still has a choice in what he does, she is also saying that she can choose to stop being a traitor. But she can't quite convince herself, which is why she's so adamant that Bond can change; it's not really about whether Bond can change, it's about whether she can. Bond returns with a quip about people who can't take advice being the ones who always give it. This startles Vesper because, like the scene on the train, he can see through her. He can't see completely through her; he doesn't know what she's struggling with, but he can see that she's driven by something. Vesper is so rattled by Bond's insight that she's put on the defensive and answers his question with a question of her own, sidestepping the issue. Bond brings the issue back to the forefront by revealing how much he's able to see through her, and saying that he'll never know what's driving her. This is a perfect opportunity for Vesper to come clean and tell him everything, but the opportunity is lost. She gets a text, Bond realizes that Mathis is a traitor, Vesper is kidnapped, then Bond is kidnapped, and then she is forced to make a deal to save Bond's life by giving up the money Bond won in the tournament. After that, it's too late for her. She can't tell him her situation because the people she was working with would kill Bond. So they continue to fall in love, but she knows the relationship is doomed. Her only hope is to die and pay for her sins against Bond. She knows he'll hate her forever, but his hatred is worth it if it keeps him alive. She loves him more than she values her own life.

I am glad you like Mads. As one of his fellow danes, I can tell you that he is indeed very funny. Many of his roles include this deadpan humor, where he can say the most outrageous things with a complete straight face. The thing is, that his kind of subtle humor really doesn't translate. So this is why in his international career he only get villain roles, because of his very angular face. He deserves more leading male roles.

He got to play a mostly good guy in that Star Wars movie but yes, it's a shame he seems to have been pigeonholed into villain roles in Hollywood. Obviously he was a Very Bad Guy in Hannibal but I thought that show displayed his comedic skills well too since it actually contained a lot of dry, dark, and absurdist humour. I'm from the UK and there's a bit more of an interest in Scandinavian films and TV here so I've seen quite a lot of Mads' Danish work and I think he's great in the leading man type role since his face is so expressive and able to convey a lot of subtle emotions. He's also very funny in those weird Anders Thomas Jensen films.

I'd never heard of him at all before Casino Royale because I'm an uncultured Texas redneck I guess lol but damn if Mads isn't one of the most compelling actors I've ever seen. He elevates everything he's in just by his presence. Some actors just have "it" and he most certainly does. Loved Hannibal. Loved him in Rogue One and Doctor Strange. Riders of Justice was great. The bond of literature was very much a cold warrior and quite cold. Fleming described him as having a "cruel mouth." In appearance, and in some attitude, Craig was closes to original Bond. His bond had come out of WWII with considerable experience. No throw-away glib bon mots. Very much professional. And no superman. He was capable of no more spectacular feats as any extraordinarily fit man. Of course, Fleming had been in intelligence, too, and had a character in mind and a specific chief in mind as "M". They had to completely scrap the story from The Spy Who Loved Me to make it acceptable as a film. The novel was narrated from the point of view of a woman, and Bond only comes into it for a short time at the end. The narrator spends a lot of time telling of her sexual experiences, giving Fleming, a gay man, a chance to write from a woman's view. In Casino Royale, the novel, Le Chiffre was not financing terrorist organizations. Terrorism as a theme had not arisen. He handled finances for Communist cells in Europe, and in the end, the KGB got him, the agent carving the Russian letter "Ш" , the first letter in "Spy" in Russian, into Bond's hand to make him recognizable to other KGB agents. The reason he didn't kill Bond was simply because he had no orders to do so. The demise of the Soviet Union was really hard on spy novelists.

It's funny how I didn't think much of this movie when it first came out. Perhaps I was too used to the previous Bond films with the silly gadgets and goofy one-liners. But eventually, Casino Royale became my favorite Bond movie and the one I've seen the most. Casino Royale is a reboot of the James Bond franchise after if became overwrought with ridiculous elements like invisible cars and Bond windsurfing on tsunamis. Inspired by Christopher Nolan rebooting Batman with a more down-to-earth approach in 2005 with Batman Begins, Casino Royale was released a year later in 2006, and its working title was "Bond Begins." The classic Bond theme doesn't appear until the very end of the movie as a conscious decision, since it is very much his origin story of how he becomes the legendary 007.

My two favorite Bond films are both directed by Martin Campbell and were both the actor's first foray as James Bond. Casino Royale and Goldeneye. I am a 90's kid so I am biased in that sense. The older films have their place and are fun in their own right. Hope to see you make your way through at least Pierce Brosnan's and Sean Connery's tenures after doing Craig's. Keep in mind while these are the stories of the same character the individual movies rarely reference one another especially when changing Bond actor's, even if supporting characters are played by the same people. Craig's Bond is the first to establish a hard continuity starting with Royale.

Pierce Brosnan was my first Bond but I really like Daniel Craig’s take on the character. In the original novel by Ian Fleming the Casino Royale is inspired by the Casino Estoril in Portugal, a country that was neutral during WW2 but right in the middle of the conflict and thus a spy hotbed

It was here in Portugal that Ian Fleming got the ideas for James Bond, it was based on the spies he met while based at the Hotel Palácio Estoril, of course the Casino was where they all operated. We were "neutral" yet always allowed Allied spies to do their "business" here freely whilst selling our wolframite to the germans, a very precious mineral for their war industry.

Keep in mind that when one views this movie, it is a re-boot of the Bond franchise. The Bond that we see in the beginning of this movie is NOT the Bond we have come and love since the 1960s. However, as the movie progresses, he does become the Bond we have come to love and admire. This is the reason that the classic Bond theme is not played until the very end, even though bits of it can be heard throughout the soundtrack as he discovers himself.

The part where Bond almost hits Vesper (28:38), he misses & rolls the car 9 times (a Guinness world record btw). The chair torture scene in this makes many if not all men flinch when Le Chiffre hits him in his groin (29:26), I was the only 1 in the screening of the cinema that didn't flinch or go ouch etc, it just made me chuckle.

Since you appeared to be really analyzing James's character in this movie, I feel that you should definitely react to the other Daniel Craig movies as well. They do build off of each other and James develops as a character over the course of all the movies. I would also recommend not letting a huge amount of time pass between reactions-- unless you're really good at remembering characters and plot points over long periods of time.

@VKunia I’m sure someone has already commented, but it’s not “ M-16”. It’s “MI-6”. The MI stands for Military Intelligence. In Britain MI-5 handles domestic intelligence and MI-6 handles international, just like the USA breaks them up for the FBI and CIA. For future James Bond movies, the code name for the head of MI-6 is always M, short for the nickname Mother in real life. Another important character is Q, short for quartermaster, who issues spy equipment to Bond.

It has happened before in the big TV series Game of Thrones where the villain/hero Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and villain Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk), end up in a duel, where Jaime Lannister kill Euron, but suffer a mortal wound himself.

Re the cop car getting blown away by the jet, that's actually likely, jumbo jet engines are extremely powerful. What isn't likely is the "Sprinkler Override" key. A sprinkler override would turn all the fire sprinklers off, not on. In fact that is a problem with virtually every film using the fire sprinkler trope, they don't all go off at once. A sprinkler only goes off when the fire heats that one sprinkler to over a certain temperature (typically 135 to 250 F, 57-121 C) but all the remaining sprinklers will remain off unless the fire spreads. This limits water usage to the area where the fire is, otherwise the water pressure would drop significantly and areas of the building with no fire would be water damaged.

I grew up with the classic Bond films. And for some fans, Sean Connery is the only Bond. But Daniel Craig instantly became my favorite Bond the very first time I saw this film. I've now seen "Casino Royale" more times than I've seen all of the other Bond films combined. Connery's Bond now comes across as an international playboy who occasionally does spy stuff. Craig's Bond is a cold, focused professional. Ian Fleming described Bond this way: "Bond disliked killing, but took pride in doing it well." That's Craig's Bond in a nutshell. Off topic a bit: When I was in high school we had a Danish exchange student named Mads. He pronounced it 'Medds'.

I'm so glad you're watching Bond! A few things to understand Bond movies: Bond leaves a path of destruction wherever he goes, especially cars and vehicles. Style, drinking, cars, girls, guns, and gambling are a big part of them. They feature exotic locations usually around 5. The villains are usually a bit over the top. This was actually not a bad one to start with, since they decided to reboot the franchise and explain how Bond become a 00 in it. At the time poker, specifically Texas Hold-em, was a big fad so that part seems a little off now I think.

I also love that Judi Dench was casted as the role as M in Craigs Bond movies since she first appeared as M in the Pierce Brosnan Bond Movies I fell dumbstruck and empty somehow after I watch the last Bond movie with Craig as Bond.
