Bond is portrayed here as a man with real problems, emotions and I love the part after the fight scenes, where he portrys (as would have happened in real life) rushes of adrenaline and stress. He's on another level, compared to the other actors before him.

In a way they're very clever in bending the rules.. Its like Logan, for us in the UK it was a 15, because there isn't any lingering on the violence. BUT somehow that makes it so much more violent.. Same for the DK and Casino Royale. both rated 12-A for the UK. The swiftness of the violence, and the not showing of blood and guts. Makes it worse... Its like the guy in Casino Royale when he chokes out the guy down the stairs, Jesus Christ! Thats intense in cinema!

The defining moment of Casino Royale's subversion for me came in the romance scene with Solange, the arms dealers wife. It starts like every other Bond love scene, there's the Aston martin, he flirts, they tussle a bit, she goes to take a shower and he orders champagne. The concierge asks if its for two- he says "no, for one" then instantly bails on her. See his objective in that scene was never to fuck her, he isn't some sex crazed maniac- his objective is, and always was, to get close to her to get the information he needed. It contextualized how we saw bond and his promiscuity- most of the time, his bizarre obsession with getting his dick wet during life threatening missions is what compromises him. The only person he fucks in Royale is Vesper- the woman he actually cares for. Casino re-wrote the script explaining that Bond is not a sexual maniac- hes just sly operator using all assets at his disposal. I guess hes a whore. Anyway, the film goes back to basics - he stops the terrorist and the woman ends up getting squeezed as is customary- but now the context, Bonds sense of responsibility has completely changed. Shes not dead because shes some unfaithful whore- shes dead because he used her. It turned bond from some sex crazed junkie that wouldn't make it past basic psych screening, into a fucking badass with some heavy shit on his shoulders. Then Spectre just said "fuck it" and had him fuck Monica Bellucci against a mirror the night of her murdered husbands funeral. Granted, its Moncia Bellucci, we'd all do the same thing if we could.
@Resvain7 жыл бұрын
Well, it makes sense that Bond from "Spectre" would do that - the loss of Vesper really fucked him up. He truly loved her and after her death he became somewhat cynical in relations with women. I'd call that a pretty convincig sad evolution of his character.
@ricardocantoral76727 жыл бұрын
Craig was definitely more of an emotionally disturbed Bond; an anti-hero who was relatively down to earth. Connery on the other hand was more fantastic and as Gene Siskel aptly put it "He could kill and make love in the same afternoon".

But this is mainly because Casino Royale is Bond 1.0. It's the beginning. It's what made Bond what he is in other films. His actions in this film make him actions in the other Craig bonds even better, because we can see where they came from. But it's also better because they've given themselves as clean a slate as possible. This entire series of Craig Bonds is one huge origins story. We have his beginnings as a 00 agent, his beginnings as a man, his beginnings as an alcoholic, and his beginnings as a rebel. It's a series of films that lays bare the reasons behind Bond. And that is fantastic, even if some of the films are better than the others. But damn, he is young in that film. After watching Spectre recently, he's really grown old, both the actor and the character, physically and emotionally.

The pre title scene of Casino Royale sold me on the whole film. From the brutal bathroom fight to the cold "Yes, considerably." It shows a quality that is so sadly missing in action movies. I don't know what others call it, but I use the term "Showmanship". The ability to bend rules and narratives to make the movie feel more like a tightly choreographed show than just a string of deafening events. While a film may be filled with contriveances and clichés and predictable elements, if you know how to present it with showmanship the audience will cheer nonetheless. And that is one of the main goals of action films for me.
@speedracer19455 жыл бұрын
This film owes a lot to Martin Campbell who also directed Goldeneye and wish he would direct more but wont . He also did the Zorro films , so this guy knows action and comedy and made a serious damn good film and for me a serious Bond fan , this film almost ranks # 1 on my list .

I just re-watched some scenes from GoldenEye, including the one where 006 asks Bond if all the vodka martinis silence the screams of all the men he's killed, and now that you stated what your favorite scene is, that line has so much more depth, and is proven to be true!

@warrenrhinerson63733 жыл бұрын
@@theguybehindyou4762 for me the problem I have with Brosnan’s bond is Brosnan himself. While I think he was a good film 007, he is the only Bond actor to completely ignore the original source material and focus only on what the previous actors did. Craig actually read Casino Royale before filming and did his best to be as accurate as possible. Lazenby read On her majesty’s secret service before filming and even had the book with him when they filmed the final scene of the film. Roger Moore based his Bond on the Living Daylights short story where Bond mentions he does kill but he doesn’t like doing it. Dalton read all of Flemings works before taking in the part, Connery actually worked very closely with Fleming himself

Best Bond film ever. It has the emotional maturity and patience to establish real characters. Intelligence is the ability to identify subtlety. And although this is an action film, the amount of subtle eye glances, characters pondering their actions (in their attempts to control their environment) is what sets this Bond film apart from other Bond films, as well as being one of the best action films ever! If a character is worth exploring, then it's worth taking your time in doing so and this films many, should I say, slower scenes, are actually some of the more action packed scenes. Though there are no punches being flown or bullets being shot, the tension and emotional charges being laid can be felt viscerally.

The greatest Bond film of all time and it’s not even close. I was there in theaters in 2006 when this film came out. To this day, I am blown away that this film is as good as it is all these years later. From Craig’s perfect performance as Bond, to Martin Campbell’s incredible direction, Paul Haggis’s pitch perfect script, David Arnold’s wonderful score and perfect supporting cast. To relaunch the Bond franchise after 20 films is as ballsy a move as I’ve ever seen come out of modern cinema. Bond is once again made suave, cool, and a deadly killer. It is still the Gold standard I judge all other Bond films by to this day. This film is nothing short of a miracle.

I think the Craig's trilogy is the best because it deals with the vulnerability of Bond and how he overcomes it. Spectre on the other hand falls back to the usual Bond tropes and reduces the consequences to almost zero. But Daniel Craig is the best bond since Sean Connery.

Thanks for this cool breakdown of why I love this Casino Royale the best. I seem to be rather lonely in my love of my second favorite, The Living Daylights. I'd love to hear your take on that one. btw I don't agree that LOTR is primarily about home. The key theme of LOTR is much debated, variously argued as death, friendship, loyalty and more. I run workshops on the Inner Meaning of Lord of the Rings, and my take is that the core message is the power of compassion. (Bilbo spares Gollum through compassion (pity). Gandalf foreshadows Gollum saving the world when he points this out to Frodo in Moria.)

Finally someone who understand and appreciate what they were trying to do with Craig's Bond! I would love to see your opinion of Quantum of Solace which was in my opinion an excellent movie and perfect continuation to both this new version of Bond (which I usually define a post-Jason Bourne Bond, since all the extreme gadgets and unrealistic stuff portrayed in the previous movies wouldn't be accepted as easily after the Bourne trilogy) and to the narrative arc that they built. Unfortunately it received poor reviews and many people hate on that movie, and that brought the studios to change the direction of the sequels, first with Skyfall that was very well made technically but was terrible in the fact that it trashed everything good made by the previous movies and with the reintroduction of Moneypenny, Q, and the almost cartoonish and over the top villain, it brought back the series to its outdated tropes. Then there was that terrible disaster known as Spectre that made everything worse even trying to tied the loose ends in the most hastily and poorly done way possible... That's my opinion of course but I'm curious to see if it's shared and/or what was you opinion of the sequels to Casino Royale.... :D

An excellent critique of an excellent film, well done mate. Although I have to say, the opening scene is probably the best one in the whole movie, as we find out how hardened Bond is already with his expression after having just brutally finished his first kill, and knowing full well he is about to make his second, a supposed 'ally' no less. Add in the effect of black and white to symbolize something unknown, (espionage perhaps), and you have yourself a perfect scene.
