The perfect Bond theme for this film - it feels muscular, dangerous, tense, and a little bit sad. And feels both fresh and classic at the same time. A lot of the other themes are written either about the villain themselves (and some of these are awesome btw), or just anything. All they need is just to have the title of the movie in them. Probably the "deepest" lyrics ever written for a Bond movie theme. Quote from Wikipedia: Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme. Cornell declared he liked the Bond movies, particularly the ones with Sean Connery, but that he "wasn't really a big fan of the last several movies". But Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond intrigued the musician, and he decided to accept the job. Cornell then went to Prague to visit the film's shooting, and was much impressed with the film's emotional content after he was shown a rough cut of Casino Royale. In Prague he also met the score composer, David Arnold, who suggested writing a song "that echoed the film score". The composers started their writing separately, Cornell in his apartment in Paris, and Arnold in his house in London. Cornell stated that he had some difficulties with composing: "It is difficult, I think, to write lyrics for a character, so really I just kind of wandered around for about a month not thinking about it too much, until I sort of formulated some idea of a way that I could approach it, where I'm kind of relating to what's in the character in the movie. And because this particular Bond is very edgy, but also has a lot of emotional depth, it's a lot easier."Later the two musicians met and showed each other's ideas, and according to Arnold "it was almost like we wrote two parts of the same song."Cornell wrote lyrics, to which Arnold added some lines and later music. Some of Arnold's ideas included the song's title, the heavy introduction, and "having the same genetic material as the Bond theme, but in a different order and in a different shape".

I know many people didn’t like this opening when it first came out, because many people didn’t associate rock music with James Bond. But I thought this was an excellent opening (and to me the best) as it set the tone for a new Bond (at the time) and a change of style. Cornell nailed the feeling of this song and I think it works perfectly for a Bond movie. I’m glad that it’s gotten more respect over the years. RIP Chris Cornell And we’ll miss you as Bond Daniel Craig.

I don't think i've seen anyone mention that the chorus of this song is supported by the same three-note chromatic progression that is the base of the James Bond theme. The original theme is in E minor, this song is in in B minor, but relatively, the progression is the same. In this song, the progression ends on the third note, while in the Bond theme, a fourth note redirects smoothly to the beginning of the progression. As if the song was an incomplete, unfinished version of the Bond theme - just like Bond himself in the film. This contributes in making "You Know My Name" the perfect seminal song for the character.

Cornell loved playing with music like that. His songs often were like a weird mix of prog rock and grunge with unusual time signatures and strange tunings. I feel like he and Soundgarden hit the scene just in time to not be appreciated anymore, ha ha.
@backtoklondike2 жыл бұрын
@@AuspexAO Though part of it can also be credited to David Arnold. He has been scoring all of the Brosnan movies (expect Goldeneye) and he made fan remixes of Bond music before he was asked to compose for the movies for reals. He knows the Bond theme inside and out and could because of that find a way to play around with it. Now I'm not downplaying Cornell here (RIP). He and Arnold composed the song together and made the song what it is and I doubt he would want to be just another musician for hire. This is a Chris Cornell song, I just don't think he would left out David Arnold contributions to it
@nathangraham16112 жыл бұрын
And Arnold's vision for the song was always for it to express a James Bond that hasn't fully become "James Bond." That's why "You Know My Name" is reprised in the score throughout, but the classic theme isn't heard until the very end.
