Casio A168 Illuminator Watch Battery Replacement - DIY

Casio uses the CR2016 battery for many of its models, including the classics and G Shock. Join us as we replace the battery in our A168W-1 "Illuminator."
I lost the little spring that pops open with the case back. I looked all over and couldn't find it. The watch runs fine without it, and I'm not going to worry about it.

Over the past 24 years i have gone through 4 of these watches. I have learned the hard way NOT to ever separate the layers of the movement! Instead, when you go to change the battery, all you need to do is unhook the battery clip. Leave the movement in the case. Release the battery hold-down clip, slide the battery out, give it a slight push from the back and it comes out easily. Then put the new battery in and clip down the latch that holds it in. Then do an AC clear. I used a 1 foot long piece of #24 gauge wire to poke down in the AC hole while touching the other end of the wire to the battery plus side. Did this for both AC holes because I am not sure which one works. Got the watch running again. Good so far. The spring came out and I was only able to put it back upside down with the wire tang on top but it works ok that way, and the little piezo buzzer thingy still makes noise. The electroluminescent light works again with the new battery. Picked up the battery on Ebay for $1.36 total and it arrived 4 days later. Now after watch #4, I have finally learned how to properly change battery in a Casio A168 watch. DO NOT SEPARATE THE LAYERS OF THE WORKS. Use battery clip only. Leave the works in the case. Do an AC clear. Good to go. 😁

The spring is functional - it contacts with the piezo cell on the caseback to make the alarm and beeps.

⚠️ - NOTE: You have to install spring from inside, From the battery side ( there's a tiny leg on the spring that stops spring from coming out all the way ) - That's what I did 😊

You should never pull out the spring. It is secured on the other end and it enables the beeping of the clock. I learned this the hard way by following this video. If you are only replacing the battery, you do not even need to remove the internal assembly. DO NOT FOLLOW THIS VIDEO.

Is there a warning before the battery runs out? I don't know how old mine is, and thus not how long the battery will last for. (and I'm scared I'll miss my alarm some day)

No warning! BUT! When you run the illuminator and it barely lights up and the watch display numbers dim, you know it's time to change. :) You'll notice the dim long before the alarm fails to sound (that's how mine was, at least).

I think when the case back is on it's not any looser, so I imagine it's the same. But I wouldn't consider it waterproof, maybe "splash resistant"

I'm a noob, in general around any sensitive electronics I don't use magnetic screwdrivers. I have no idea if it matters on watches but that's what I do.

The screws on the A168 are non-metallic, at least on the one I own. I have tried using a magnetic screwdriver, and the didn't stick.

@@junbox618 Now it does, actually its cause of the damn spring. If its not there, i wont make pressure so the alarm wont beep, if you go too hard on the screws when cloasing the case, it will make too much preassure and again, no sound. Ive though my battery was low, the watch is 5 years old. Dont know what happend, i just slept with the watch on wrist and when ive woke up the word casio was appearing all the time, now, the motherfuck3r is ready for the battle again!

An automatic watch looks easier to work. All you need to do is wind the crown set the time and forget about it.

It really isn't. You *do not* need to remove the main part of the watch to change the battery. This video is basically a teardown of the watch. The main part of the watch can (and should) be left inside the case while you change the battery, so you have less chance of dust getting between the display and glass.

My A168 has the weakest alarm I have ever heard from any digital watch I have owned, and I've owned various brands since 1982 when I was 8 years old. Granted my hearing isn't what it used to be, but the alarm is barely audible on this watch. I have tried other 168's, and the alarms seem barely noticeable on them as well. Anybody else have this problem? My other Casio digital watch has a much louder alarm, but not this one. My guess is that it's because the 168 has a bigger case, so the sound seems weaker. I may try replacing the piezo element at a later date and see if that helps.

I agree the beeps on Casios today are less audible than Casios from the 90s I'm used to. We have so many devices that make noise and alarm us, I'm glad this isn't one of them (for me)
