Exactly the same thing has just happened with a Casio 401 (1981), went bang, blew up with lots of smoke 💨

Those particular capacitors can be notorious for letting go and going bang. Definitely best to replace them, even if they haven't exploded yet.

Definitely not a 64MB ram chip in that Casio! Most likely an early microprocessor from NEC, custom programmed to do the rhythmns and maybe key scanning. Very early 80s I would say, lovely to see these old electronics when it was practical to repair stuff and see what did what. Most of that circuitry will be analog filters and percussion generator noise and oscillators for the cheesy drums. The voices I think are created with basic squarewaves and filters.

Many similarities to the Casiotone 401 i was testing. I figured out how to make it use 240v mode ... and then turned it on and it was spamming notes randomly so ... yeah.

I would have replaced both caps, these have a nasty habit of going short circuit! Look out for Rifa brand mains suppression caps, these should be replaced on sight.

Cmon dude, you should always replace parts matching the one that failed if they're vintage parts, that's especially what should be done. Why risk it for a few minutes and a few pennies?

HI i'm wondering if you know anything about replacing buttons on a similar model? I have the casiotone 501, which has a select button next to the instruments which allows you to chose a different selection of instruments. Unfortunately this button won't work and so half the instruments are unavailable. I saw when you lifted the lid in this model that the buttons don't seem to be easily visible or easy to replace. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. B

Hola, yo tengo un 101 y despues de cambiar los condensadores, el transformador tambien lo tengo quemado, tanto en el mio como en este pone 17.4v (18v), con cuatro salidas, no se si una pareja de secundarios es de menos voltaje o son todas de 18v. conseguistes solucionarlo o encontrarlo?

hola Eduardo solo preguntarte si lo solucionaste lo del 501, yo tengo el 501 y lo de los ritmos se oye con ruido y tocando el volumen del acompañamiento, se nota que debe tener algo roto o tal, tengo que abrirlo y eso pero no encuentro mucha info, saludos y gracias

Bizzle- i have questions about a ct-701. The right half of the keyboard will not make sound but the drum machine and left half make perfect sound. Would you know anything about this?

Hi! I have a Casiotone 403 and there is the same capacitor that the one you replaced. As it's in the same state I would like to replace it but I can't read the infos on it. Do you remember what were the value? Anyway thanks for the instructive video

Hey, great video. So I just bought a Casiotone CT 401 on eBay, and the speaker pops when I turn it on & off, and all the lights for the voices work. Problem is, I can't get any sound from the keyboard. I replaced 2 burned-out fuses, which didn't help. Any ideas?

Same issue on the same CT 401 keyboard. I replaced the burned fuses but nothing happens when I press the keys. And yes the speaker pops on mine too with power on and off. What did you do to repair it?

Can anyone help? I have the same keyboard. The other cap which was replaced on the video blew on mine, lots of smoke etc. It was completely fried, I simply pulled it off the board. I plugged back in and keyboard seems to be working fine, tested over many hours. Is this safe or dangerous? How does it still work? Please help.

The cap that was replaced is there to prevent the instrument feeding interference into the mains. So it'll work fine without it, but may make noise on other things plugged into your sockets. Probably not as much of an issue these days as when these keyboards were designed, as other modern electronics won't be as susceptible to noise on the mains as an old radio or TV, etc.

I´m sorry but I need to ask you something. Mi Casiotone 602 is only making almost inaudible sounds. All the presets and drum sounds are there but the output and the speaker are almost silent. Do you have any idea what component may be the culprit? I have a vague understanding of electronics and i've replaced parts before but I can´t figure this out. Here in Chile is difficult to find someone trusty to check electronic instruments, that´s why I prefer to do it myself. Thanks in advance!
