Casio CT-X800: Looks cheap but REALLY delivers!

The Casio CT-X800 is the second lowest in the CT-X series, only offering a pitch-bend wheel and a USB interface over the lowest model, the CT-X700. The difference in retail price is about $50. Worth it? Yup.
Just a note, due to a bit of data loss this first half of this video is really rough in appearance, and some footage is from deleted scenes from my CT-X870IN video. I assure you it's the EXACT same sounds I am demonstrating even though you might notice "CT-X870IN" visible in some shots!

Hi interesting stuff. In you keep the CT-X800 for a little longer, you’ll discover even deeper usages. It is easy to program rich, lush patches using the Layer function combined with the effects module and using the octave shifter (you can switch all tones up to two octaves higher or lower). Together with the arppegiator, there are great opportunities for patch creation. Another possibility is to use an arpeggio together with a rhythm, some of them go really well together. And if you keep holding the Arp button, for each arpeggio you select, the CT-X will find a matching tone. Some arpeggios give interesting results with acoustic sounds such as piano, clarinet, strings or marimba. Also note that it is possible to upload new rhythms to the CT-X800 from the USB stick Another useful tool is the 6-tracks MIDI recorder. Editing is very rudimentary, but it is a neat tool for quickly recording a backing track, for instance. There are some great drum kits on the CT-X800 and together with the MIDI recorder you have a neat drum machine at hand. There is one serious drawback to the CT-X800 though, and it is the impossibility to adjust the volume of the Upper1, Upper2 and Lower tones separately. After having used the CT-X800 for about one year, I am tempted again to buy the CT-X3000 to dig deeper into sound and effect editing.

Great video! I don’t think people realize just how amazing the AiX sound chip is in these. If you aren’t listening with high quality headphones, you miss the DSP and other extremely subtle effects on the CTX series. I look forward to your review of the just introduced Casiotone CT-S400 that is an update of this very keyboard with a new key bed, new speakers and amplification, and a new, much easier to use User Interface.

I bought one of these on sale for $200. Great sound for the price, love the amount of registrations. Needs volume adjust on parts, needs a selectable rotary speaker (some of the older casio’s have this). Overall a great keyboard but like so many under $1500, Organs are lacking but could be fixed with a Leslie you can control. Inspired me to upgrade to a Roland Juno DS which in turn inspired me to upgrade to a Yamaha MODX. Saving up for a Roland VR-730 now.

I am on the exact same track!! Bought the CT-X800 a couple of years ago and totallly delivered both to create music with my DAW and in live performances. The sounds are really good for the price; they are not as "fat" as the ones on professional keyboards, but they are usable in many situations. I sold it a couple of weeks ago and got my self a Roland Juno DS... amazing keyboard with great sounds and much more capabilities! I tought the keybed would take some time to get used to, but I am loving it actually! Next stop: ModX (in a couple of years) After that: Nord Stage 2 (a man can dream!)

Cdp - 350 it's just too good. It was my "first keyboard", or should I say, digital piano. It doesn't have the greatest capabilities in terms of rhythm and tones....but as a "piano" alone is one of the best for it's price. I could even play in presentations alone and with a band, and it worked flawlessly. Shame it was borrowed from a friend, but it was a hell of a time because I've learned piano through it alone and made me very aware of what a piano should sound and play...

At 00:54, I know that I like you, and I have my first suggestion. The CT-X800--like most Casio keyboards in and above this price range--has a jack for a sustain pedal, and Casio makes an inexpensive one that pairs well with this keyboard. Pressing the sustain pedal makes the notes keep sounding even after you take your fingers off those keys, and can be used to make the intro to "The Great Gig in the Sky" sound even more beautiful. That's one fairly simple thing to do that will really add to the sound and to your enjoyment of playing this instrument.
@gearfacts
@gearfacts Жыл бұрын
Yep that's correct. It also has three other modes that can change what the pedal does. I'm not sure why I didn't use a pedal when I made this video . Maybe I was just too lazy to disconnect one from one of my other keyboards!

Good question. I got this from a guy who had indeed just moved from India. It's not readily available here in Australia though I'm sure you could order it internationally. As for the sounds, Casio have just replaced about 50 of the 'less-needed sounds with traditional Indian instruments from India. Same for the rhythms, there are about 20 tradition Indian ones which are better than the ones that Casio sacrificed to fit them in. I think it's better overall than the CT-x800.

Hi Bora, if fun is your main goal (as it should be!) then I strongly recommend trying to find a Yamaha PSR-E keyboard whose numbers start with a 4. A second hand PSR-E413 for example with give you more fun than any of those other keyboards. They just have so many enjoyable features. Happy to talk further :) #gearfacts

Try going in to the FUNCTION menu then using the 4 and 6 button to go left and right through the menu options. I think one of them allows you to change the octave of the layer.

There is a Layer button that you can use to layer two tones. You can use the Tone button to change between upper and lower parts. You can even split and then layer two sounds on the upper part.

Correct: you can't control the volume of the layered/split parts.

They're very different. The S350 has more keys and is more of a 'serious' piano, but the CT-X800 has more (and better) sounds.
