Casio F-91W Retro Chic or Terrorist Watch?

*The F-91W was originally released for sale in June 1989* - Wikipedia finally updated its entry properly. The wrong year is continuously published and parroted on the Internet like a zombie - or Freddie Kruger - that just won't die. I have one as it's the simplest, least expensive Casio currently being made, a descendant of the Casiotron via the 1984 DW-240 from which it was derived. The weak-kneed LED backlight is its major flaw, and for those that consider it a deal breaker, there's the F-105W for just a few dollars more. Their modules aren't interchangeable as the 105's is ever so slightly larger. It's not obvious until you compare them closely. The F-91W became the "go-to" for IED timing triggers because it was ubiquitous globally for an exceptionally low price. It makes tracing the source of the bomb from the watch timer alone extremely difficult, if not impossible, because they are available everywhere. Bomb forensics is extremely sophisticated, beyond what most would ever imagine, in the ability to piece together fragments and identify what they are, and where they came from. To defeat or at least inhibit that requires using the most common, globally available materials possible; things made by global companies in huge quantities you could find anywhere, without any region or manufacturing plant markings that would lead to where the bomb was made. One group was tracked down when they made an unusual and suspicious large bulk buy of Casio F-91W's and didn't camouflage it as a legit wholesale procurement or cover their tracks very well. Why were terrorists wearing them? Because they were plentiful in the training camps for use in bomb training and manufacture. If one of them needed a watch, they just grabbed one from the bomb making materials stores as they were plentiful. Anyone claiming it's a "terrorist watch" only worn by terrorists needs to be reminded that a "terrorist" is identified by a sum total of *many* factors, not just the watch they're wearing, and that there aren't 3,000,000 new terrorists every year. Although it's one of the most common, many other cheap timers are used, including DIY circuits built on breadboard PCBs using very common, very cheap, programmable IC counters. The risk is the specific circuit schematic for electronic timing, if it's possible to piece that together, and the electronic parts used. Obfuscating the source of the rest of the electrical triggering to set off the explosive (requires an electrical blasting cap or equivalent) is as problematic as a DIY timer. The watch itself doesn't contain the means for that. Thus, every effort is made to prevent everything from having any unique signature or "fingerprint". May be more than you want to know. Some of us had a bit of training on how to ID various IED triggering devices and their components when doing searches, albeit mine was long ago, going on two decades now. Some rather vociferous people take every opportunity to disparage with vitriolic hatred as the watch that killed many hundreds, if not many thousands. That argument is specious. The watch didn't kill anyone. The person making the bomb using it as the timing trigger is the terrorist murderer.

@@Tulisan777 I never stated the F-105W was the stainless watch depicted in the photo, which is an A158 variant. The F-105W looks much like the F-91W with a black resin case and plastic strap.

Lots of rebel groups and freedom fighters also use the F91w because it's so durable, accurate and wildy available. The Zapatistas and the Kurds (and basically every other faction in Syria) use these things too.

I have a f91w, its lasted long then my 300 dollar suunto core. Don't know how that works. Also i shower with it on daily and never have had a problem

Yes sir, I have the 105 and it is great to wear to bed if you wake up several times a night. That's what I use it for. I have the gold face 158 that I wear during the day which is basically an F91 with a stainless bracelet. But the 105 is definitely worth the money.

Casio watch's last forever. I have seen Timex watch's fail after a battery change more than once. Accuracy for my Casio's is about a second a month.

It bugs me that there is a weird gap in the market where sub 100 bucks gets you a really accurate watch, above that is all cheap inaccurate yet nice auto's before the accuracy picks up again in the 000's its crazy.

I had one of these for nearly a year. It has seen much abuse. Face was scratched up but it worked. Then I went swimming at a lake the other day. Forgot the watch on. It worked fine. But I threw it to shore from the water. I even looked at it before leaving! But I forgot it! So I bought a new one today. The same one but the one with a stainless steel band and electro luminescence display. Love the watch. Perfect, simple and cheap. I don't care if I break or lose it. It's $20!

I remember my dad wore that kind and i think i had one as a kid, very simple and worked. The light on the old one sucked and was a dim average yellow light color. I think i may get one just because its cheap, and has a low profile and light weight. Metal band analog watches are too annoying for me to get used to wearing again.

I have a weird old Casio LW-201, which is like a smaller version of these. 10yr battery (probably already 10 year old too), purple face markings, purple buttons, red (probably originally purple, faded) nylon wrist band adorned with black fake leather. Maybe i should wear it again, can't remember myself doing so. It's definitely not been set since 2009, given the box i rediscovered it in, and it runs 9 minutes early. I gave the chromed version of this watch to my father, but it got discarded short time later: it got scuffed up and wore down. I didn't know it was going to be just plastic underneath :( You know what, check out Elektronika 5. Similar styling, mid 80ies, scratch resistant glass, indestructible overall. It's got music on it, depending on model-year, 2 melodies, usually one is Mozart's Turkish March. Be careful when replacing batteries, it usually needs a reset sequence, forgot how though.

Note about the "U" under "Resist"- not sure what it means but doesn't necessarily mean Made in China. I have an F91W, bought from Amazon, 100% authentic and the caseback says Made in Thailand. Still has the "U" on the dial and the "Casio" word shows up when holding the bottom right button for 3 secs so it's authentic. Casio has a few factories I'm sure...

The battery will last more than 5 years. Try not to use the light or the hourly chime. If you like to sleep at work put this in the palm of your hand and hold it close to your ear and you will never over sleep home time. The batteries are cheap on Amazon and are sold in OEM stips. You can resell the extras to friends if you don't need all 5 batteries.

It is very leight and super comfortable, I have it on my wrist allmost all day even when I go to bed! :-D I have that one with "gold face" reminds me of Nintendo Game and Watch, I like the colours. A few days ago I was going through some old stuff from when I was a kid and found an old Casio. It was a classic looking analog one, broken band, in bad shape didn't even bothered to replace the battery, went ahead and ordered few Casio watches, out of nostalgy, F91W, A158, I remember they were great watches. Now, having in mind that I ordered 4 Casio watches in one day, I'm a bit scared that I've got some people looking closely into who am I and what I do. To make things worse, I've ordered some wires for rewiring a guitar a few days back. But what worries me more it's that people will consider me a hipster for wearing these. I don't even know what a hipster really is, but I guess that I'll have to be one now.
