I have been using scientific calculators for the last 25 years; this key layout has some flaws. Old Casio and HP calculators have well designed key layouts.

You want that symbol to show bc it means you are in textbook mode which displays things the way you would write them by hand. Go into setup (shift+menu key) 1 (input/output) 1 (MathI/MathO)

Assuming we are talking about log base 10, you would just use 10^8.4 . This is bc 10^x is the inverse of log(x) -- aka the anti log.

When you have a ratio of sides (like your example) and want to find the angle, you need to use SHIFT-sin to get the "arcsin" (sin^-1) function. SHIFT-sin(√3/2)=60 deg (make sure that calculator is in degree mode).

But the log key should be the default, and log_base should be shifted. They should have switched the functions. What's happened to today's designers? I have been using Casio calculators since 1997. Never saw such a design flaw.

Agree that it is a strange decision. And, to make it worse, the log (base 10) key is shifted and in a completely different zone of the keyboard. Calculators are a lot like cars -- they all have their faults/flaws. Thanks for pointing this out and leaving the comment, Zzyx.

If you switch to the line input then you can get both on the same key. They likely did it so as otherwise people would rarely use the specified base

@@marko8962 What is K^2? In other words, what is this formula used to calculate? Any chance you could post a photo of the actual problem and provide a link? I'm having trouble deciphering it at this point. Part of the problem is that log^-1 can be interpretted two ways: (1) as the inverse of log and (2) as the reciprocal of log --- two very different things. If you can tell me what this formula is related to, I'll try to help.

This calculator... sucks. Big time. I have a Physics degree and design computers for a living, and I had to go to KZbin to find out how to persuade it to do logs in any base other than 10. It defaults to base 10, and I can't find a way to switch base. I saw your SHIFT-MINUS technique, but it doesn't work here - it just enters "log(" again. What a pile of junk.
