SO what is the best light source to charge your solar watch... well I've bought a gadget that will give me a better knowledge upon this shady subject.
The tests in this video is for guidance only and not in anyway a proven scientific fact... meaning it's for fun too!
Watch Geek did a fantastic video also about solar charging so check his link out

Couldnt you use your smartphone light sensor to readout the lux ? Why buy something when all you need is to install an app?

@@Frofelfel Cheers buddy... downloading now :)) OK, just tested the light sensor and there's a massive difference between my phone and my LUX Meter by 1000LUX.... just looking at my camera, as that has a light meter built in, and that's almost matching my LUX Meter... The light sensor on the phone is much smaller so that would be a reason... but am looking at all the other options that App offers, think I've found my new Candy Crush LML :-P Brilliant app, and some cool things it can offer, so will be having much time with it. Cheers for the support... have a few ideas I need to push before any light sensor videos, but those reading these comments, will enjoy this one for sure, especially now I've pinned it :))

A good follow-up video would be to see how much lux gives you the best bang for your buck when it comes to charging speed. Who's to say that flashlight will charge that much faster than the proprietary watch charger, just based on the lux output. The charge speed difference could very well be negligible.

I have a LED desk lamp that produces about 100000 lux when measured an inch from the light source. It uses a single LED, and the lamp is rated 4.2 W max. It's easy to position it shining light straight down onto a watch lying on the desk, and it is powered by an AC adapter. So it's brighter than most of the sources you tested, and holds itself in position. Like any LED light source, the watch stays cool. This is likely a good solution for anyone who already owns a small bright LED desk lamp.

Could a laser pointer beam produce sufficient light enough to charge eco drive & tough solar watch 🤨 wonder how much lux does it generated 🤔
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 4 жыл бұрын
@@jijoious Just done an experiment using my high powered laser that's more powerful than just the regular laser pointer which pushes out 3000 LUX only... there is also the duration aspect as handheld lasers can only be on for a limited time, as they can burn out. The Coolfire solar charger is the most convenient as you can charge over night without harm. But was an interesting idea, cheers :))

@@WatchUP69MrRangeman last question :- would using magnifying glass / lenses boost the lux / lumen thus shortened up the amount require to full charge 😃
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 4 жыл бұрын
@@jijoious That's an interesting question and a very good one I must add. LUX/Lumins is measured over an area travelled, the greater the distance the more the light spreads, this is calculated over square so having the light at the closest point will give you more LUX... this is why many modern cars use projector lenses so it can minimise the spread of light. On normal reflector headlights you'll notice that the light is more thrown out with much of the light going in all directions, even if it's not bright, it's still light that's lost. Projector headlights have a very sharp cut off point with little light leakage so to speak, and this can be tested when parked close to a wall or your garage door. So if using a magnifying lens you should have a more concentrated amount of light which equals more LUX per square meter. Depending on the light source this can also increase heat, as I'm sure you've played with a magnifying lens using the sun, finding that sweet spot that actually can burn or smelt material. Using an LED bulb would be recommend if using a magnifying or projector lens as the heat won't be generated as much as a filament bulb which is basically burning wire hot inside a sealed glass tube. Fluorescent tubes has a massive wide spread of light which is what it's designed for, so not the greatest to use in this case. If you're after the best light, then direct sunlight, just don't leave it so it starts to cook and shuts down the watch as it'll go into a safe mode, which shows the LCD going blank. In the instruction manual it will have a table of how much time is needed to maintain and to fully charge the watch battery. I still think the CoolFire is the safest for long periods of charge in my opinion, and the one I use the most. Great question again, and hope I've helped you further. I'm sure there is more scientific behind what I've said, but that's the gist of it anyway. Cheers :)

No matter the season, the suns LUX is the same... but also these G-Shocks can take 60c of heat... its when they're left in a window bay with no ventilation is when it begins to get more interesting. Unless you know a pilot that fly's above the clouds, but natural daylight is still plenty enough to trickle charge :)

@KevAlberta 3 жыл бұрын
@@WatchUP69MrRangeman I agree with you but I think the Suns lux is diminished in the winter here as the sun doesn’t go nearly as high at noon. It always looks like it’s 3 hours to sunset so the light has to be going through more atmosphere and diminishing the power of the sun ever slightly
@WatchUP69MrRangeman

@@KevAlberta All this for a tiny solar panel... now, maybe strap it to your headlights of your car or a friends car :-P Now I've done this... I've got an old desk lamp, and replaced the filament bulb with a 15w LED bulb... this worked quite well until I got my CoolFire. If you have a few solar watches, then worth getting a CoolFire, otherwise use the bright LED bulb. Try and keep it exposed to the brightest part of your day/evenings, but being on 'M' still means it has enough reserve for the winter months.

Hi I have a question? I have many G shocks the atomic ones are fine my question is. With the module 3194...3403 which is neither Bluetooth or atomic. I do have the daylight savings time set I live around New York . The UTC is -5 five.. The watches that are non-atomic and non-Bluetooth how are they supposed to set to daylight savings time without getting a signal from somewhere because they did not...!! I hope I explained it correctly..
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 4 жыл бұрын
You explained well and not easy to explain anyway but will help you... With regards to the 3194 module this has either the option to set the DLS to either 'ON' or 'OFF' so at the moment if in the region of New York and you have day light saving times then your watch should have DST displayed on the dial with your local time... then come the time when we enter the summer time, then all you need to do is go into the adjustment screen and turn off DST which will adjust the time one hour forward, then do the same when in the winter day light saving time by turning on the DST sending the hour back. Some G-Shocks have a 'AUTO' setting where this is all programmed into the watch and adjusts it for you which aren't atomic just to add. Maybe I explained too much, but wanted to say everything even if it feels like I've repeated myself. Cheers

Personally I would get a CoolFire light... this works brilliantly and charges much quicker than any lighting you have at home, and a torch is really to give it a boost, not to really be used to keep it on for several hours a day. You can get a desk lamp and replace the bulb with something with more watts. As long as you expose it to light it'll charge, darkness won't charge it at all, so if you're not wearing each day, then leave it near a bright part of the home. If less than half then this will take some time to full. I got my CoolFire on Amazon and I would be lost without it, it's helping to restore dead Citizen Eco-Drives after two days, and if that was down to normal lighting, that'll probably be two weeks if not more. Hope that helps you my friend :)

@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 4 жыл бұрын
I think I saw that review... to be honest I don’t know what that meant... is that 3% over an hour, or total amount available? I would guess 3% per hour which means nothing without the capacity of the battery. Here is the link for the instructions on the GPR-B1000 which shows you the charging solar times... To be honest, running the battery down on the Rangeman takes much abuse... I’ve done a GPS test driving from the UK down to Switzerland then back again, and the GPR-B1000 made it without the use of the wireless charger, with two battery cells left which is enough to still use the ABC functions. That would be a great test using the Fenix solar vs Rangeman... waiting for Garmin to loan me one :-P I hope the link helps support.casio.com/storage/en/manual/pdf/EN/009/qw3452.pdf

@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy... The Mudman G-9300 was released in 2011 so the battery will still be good. Now, the battery on these do take time to fully charge, and the 3rd section (H) is where it is now. I'm not sure which version you have, but if its the GW-9300 then turn off the MB6 and the LT so it has less battery consumption, and leave the watch near a sunny window. As you can see from my video, some artificial lighting doesn't produce many LUX's compared to natural bright light. The compass and backlight use most of the battery followed by MB6, so see how it performs when these are turned off, and maybe it'll boost the battery level up to 'H' But as for the battery, this is still good for the age, and I'm going from the G-9300 version. It will take time to fully charge, but if it falls below 'M' and hits 'L' then something isn't right. Thankfully these batteries only cost around £15 and are no different to replace than a regular lithium battery. Good to replace the gasket and silicon before placing the back case on.

Hey Mr Rangeman, i would like to have your opinion again. I try with my not so good english. Have your ever seen that the display on your watches got damaged by to much pure sun or to much heat? On my Riseman i saw over the years, that the battery indicator, the little line, bleached from black to grey. The numbers on the display get also a very little bit brighter, but not in a bad way. I think i had the watch to much in the sun on very hot days. I don't want to make the same mistake on my other watches, especially on my new GW-9400. I want to buy a watch charger like in your video. Is this recommendable and harmless for the watch? Is the watch getting the full charging level with such a watch charger? Thanks for your answer.
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy... Well you've just addressed something that's seen on my Riseman too, with regards to a light amount of bleaching on the dial. I personally don't keep my watches in direct sunlight like placed on a wall. The reason is because of the risk to fading plastics and resins, also with the print. That's why I have a CoolFire solar charger, it's convenient and compact but mainly because it's safe. The heat from the light is no more than what comes from your hands if that. I've used it constantly for over 70hrs charging a Citizen Eco-Drive from flat to full without any damage. I know they seem a lot of money for what they are, but the LED's used are the best I've found. For general solar charging it's perfect, for my GPR-B1000 Rangeman, it'll need to be left on a lot longer, which makes no sense when that Rangeman comes with a wireless charger. Hope that helps you my friend... cheers :)

Can the battery become overcharged? If yes, is it dangerous? How to notice it has already overcharged?
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 4 жыл бұрын
Good question... the solar G-Shocks measure the battery voltage, also the battery can only charge when it needs charging, and can't overcharge once full. Basically the energy going into the battery is just stacking back up the lithium ions, it's isn't soaking up electricity, that's just used to organise the ions again. There's many articles about this, but the answer is no it can't overcharge. If you leave your solar G-Shock in direct sunshine or another hot area where it goes above 60c, the module will shutdown and turn off the display, when this happens, just by letting the watch cool down will kickstart the module again and start working... the LCD may bleed, but usually settles back to normal. If you're in low lighting, then maybe look for a CoolFire solar watch charger???

To me it's the LCD that has gone, and it's just one of those things that can't have 10000%. Yes you can, just have it to mind that even though G-Shocks can take a serious amount of heat, be careful when leaving it by a window or on the dashboard of a car where heat can actually rise to a point of making the watch go into safe mode. Also a hot watch can burn your skin. Just by wearing the watch outside in any lighting is plenty enough, this video is more for those who have a bigger collection and can't wear them so often.
