I know Gasquet is much older, but this match really highlights the struggles that classic one handers have had against the continual refinement of the two handed game. The way that Ruud can create pressure off the backhand wing even against one of the greatest one handers of all time and poke winners down the line with barely any effort when that takes Gasquet a huge, beautiful but time-consuming swing really shows you how hard you have to work as a one-hander. You either have to dictate with the shot like Thiem does or get extremely good at hitting on the run like Shapo, but even they can't shovel a defensive shot back into play like two-handers can... It's such a shame

Honestly, the fact that there is still a substential minority of one handers at the top shows that the shot is still good and nothing to be sad about. If the two hander was really better there wouldnt be any one handers at the top. The two hander is just a bit more solid for today's techniques, equipment and surfaces, but pros can definitely choose to go for a one hander if they want. And since they teach two handers mostly in schools, you could expect there would be even more good one handers matching two handers at the top if that wasn't the case.

Gasquet has plenty of power, Ruud is absorbing it as he stands well behind the baseline, making Gasquet’s ball look slower than what it is. Ruud is a natural clay court player. Gasquet’s shots would be much more effective against a player like Karatsev who plays on the baseline.
