Cassis (French pronunciation: [kasi]; Occitan: Cassís) is a commune situated east of Marseille in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, whose coastline is known in English as the French Riviera, in Southern France. In 2016, it had a population of 7,265.
It is a popular tourist destination,[3] famous for its cliffs (falaises) and the sheltered inlets called calanques. The wines of Cassis are white and rosé, and not to be confused with crème de cassis, a specialty of Burgundy which takes its name from blackcurrants (cassis), not the commune.
Cassis is a picturesque and charming town located on the Mediterranean coast of France, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is situated about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Marseille, one of the major cities in the region. Cassis is well-known for its stunning natural beauty, including its rocky cliffs, turquoise waters, and breathtaking landscapes.
Key features of Cassis:
Calanques: The main attraction of Cassis is its Calanques, which are steep-walled, narrow inlets with crystal-clear waters that cut into the limestone cliffs along the coastline. These geological formations offer beautiful hiking trails and are popular for boat tours, allowing visitors to explore the rugged and pristine coastline.
Cassis Harbor: The town's small and picturesque harbor is a lively and colorful place, surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It's a great spot to enjoy a meal, relax with a drink, or simply take in the serene atmosphere.
Beaches: Cassis has several sandy beaches and pebbled coves where visitors can relax and soak up the sun. The Plage de la Grande Mer and the Plage du Bestouan are two popular beaches in the area.
Wine: The region surrounding Cassis is renowned for its vineyards, and Cassis produces its own unique white wine, called "Cassis Blanc." The local wineries are worth a visit for wine tasting and to learn about the wine-making traditions of the area.
Cap Canaille: Just outside Cassis, you'll find Cap Canaille, which is the highest sea cliff in France. It offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding landscape.
Village Charm: Cassis has managed to preserve its Provençal charm, with narrow streets, pastel-colored houses, and a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to both locals and tourists.
Outdoor Activities: Besides exploring the Calanques, visitors can engage in various outdoor activities in Cassis, such as hiking, rock climbing, and water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding.
Cassis is a popular destination, particularly during the summer months when many people visit to enjoy the coastal beauty and warm weather. However, it's also a great place to visit during the shoulder seasons, such as spring and fall, when the weather is still pleasant, and the crowds are smaller.
Overall, Cassis offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, cultural richness, and outdoor activities, making it a fantastic place to experience the best of the French Mediterranean.
