Actually, their main flaw, on most of them if not all, is the 4mm blade stock, which is 1mm thicker, than what it should have been, for a scandi grind to work properly on any cutting task. I'm tired of trying to explain to people, (as many makers also do), that scandi grinds should be maximum 3mm thick, on medium size knives like those. A guy, that didn't have the experience, neither the knowledge, once told me that that's fixable, by raising the edge bevel. Well, that not only doesn't fix that issue, but it makes to worse, and that's true, no matter what knife it is. I try with the example of the Morakniv and a TON of other serious bushcrat knife makers, where they all produce 3mm maximum blade stocks, and people still do no understand. In my humble opinion, it's mostly lack of experience and knowledge, because the only people who do not understand this, and insist on knives that are 100% marketing designs, and 0% proper designs, are always people that are collectors rather than users, and do not accept the fact , that they do not have neither knowledge, nor the experience. Also, all act like kids, trying to defend their buy. They think that because they spent an amount of money, that the knife is at it should have been.. Well. Nope.. that's not true. Facts are facts.

He greek Veteran, Thanks for the info, I agree you should always put a knife in the sheet. But for testing purposes it's to mush work doing that every time, and i assume if i'm going to baton with it it should be ok leaving them side by side on the table? In comparison to people hitting them against steel pipes i'm being very gentle. I do like the thinner blades for carving, i guess everybody knows that. But for strength and batoning a thicker blade is more useful, The new Mora knives are also 3.2 mm thick, I guess for a reason. I to ruined a few edges trying to get it sharp. My first falkniven S1 is now an a-semitrical scandi..... we learn as we go..... Greetings Wim

@@traveler5898 You're right! I never left the knives side by side like that again though! You crushed the edges with the spines many times in this video! That means a lot of chips on the edge. At least, that's what happens to my knives, when I put them unsheathed like that, side by side! Just watch your video again closely, the edges hit hard on the spines, a lot of times!. As for sharpening, we've all destroyed some knives, before we learned how to do it! If you won't make mistakes, you won't learn!! Keep them sharp and enjoy!!

110% agree 👍 3mm is plenty above that you might as well make a high thin saber grind with convex edge like verustalika 110 Puukko knife . I actually am building the NKD 100 forester right now , I ha e the scales glued and will begin sanding soon. I want to do a review after I use it and explain the DEFECT of the edge . First, I want to see if it will work at all.. I paid $38 for the blank so no big spending purchase for me . I'm curious about these blades since he was a Brisa partner . I'm guessing it's purpose is to hammer ot through logs skin hogs and chop twigs but whittle wood ...no way. It has the same fat belly as the Garberg gets on the 14C28N after ya try any sharpening . That blade also annoys me . I've heard the Carbon Garberg has a better belly wall to tip , I'm interested in that. Anyways , I love building blades and really love Brisa knives . I just finished an Enzo Elver build they are discontinued now so if ya see one better nab it. I think they are perfect little blades ,just right with thickness and edge geometry. I'll review them on my knife channel Airiks Knife Reviews. I abandoned that channel and need to start it up again .

@@Airik1111bibles Hey brother! I'm glad you're building knives! You can always change a belly,to any shape you like, same way we reprofile an edge on stones! Do you sharpen a Casstrom scandi to a zero grind or do you put a micro bevel on the blade? Thank you.
@traveler5898
@traveler5898 8 ай бұрын
Hi, as long as it is still reasonable sharp I strop at a leather strop with compound. I believe you get a very small microbevel using a strop. That holds an edge quit long. If the edge gets damaged I use a whetstone en sharpen it to a zero grind. Then I strop it a little. So I don't put a secondary bevel on it on purpose. It just gets a small microbevel by stropping I guess. Greetings Wim

Very hard to make a judgment on a knife with the factory edge. To really see if a knife is good it takes a few sharpening to get to good steel. This was a nice test I’m rather bias towards 14c28n . I’m not sure if it’s because I use it more or because I own a few knives in it. Most important to me is comfort then it’s carry options. I’m left handed so that usually means I have to buy another sheath. Joker makes a great knife. I personally use 3 knives a mora Garberg, BPS adventurer, Hultafor ok4. They are my got to knives. Guess everyone needs to find what they like.

I agree, I use different knives but i always end up using a mora companion. I got a casstrom Lars falt. That is one of my favorites now (in sleipner). handle is better than the No10. But I have a custom handle on a No 10 with 14C28 and I love that too. I also bought a Joker Bushlore, also in Sleipner, identical to the Lars Flat knife. Think about doing a Bushlore comparison..... What do you think of the BPS steel? Greetings Wim

@@traveler5898 it's much better then I thought. To tell the truth I can't tell a difference between it and 1095. It's very easy to sharpen and holds a edge as long as everything else. What I really like is no edge rolls or deformation. It's a very tough steel. I prefer tough and ease of sharpening. I'm waiting for my odenwolf scandi supposed to be delivered today. A proper 440c is a great steel if done right. I have my fingers crossed 🤞. At $24 it's not much of a loss if it doesn't preform. But if it does oh boy! You have a good 👍 one

I wish more knives came with an ambidextrous sheath. It never was much of a concern of mine but once I had a son who was left handed it became a lot more useful to have ambidextrous sheaths. There are some really good ones out there but I think I'm going to have to start leatherworking...

"To really see if a knife is good it takes a few sharpening to get to good steel" that's not necessarily true. depends on heat treat and grinding process. definitely true with bad companies like Bark River, not necessarily with Joker (and definitely not with most knives produced in japan as it's common there for knives to be wet ground)

All your knives are beautiful. But you should have included the Mora Comp from the start, even though it's an ugly duckling. Not very scientific to trot it out as a baseline, and then banish it to the back of the knife drawer. I have a sneaking suspicion it would have run away with the contest. El cheapo knife ($15)-- impressive after many years. But for all around, heaven help me, I still like the Joker.

@@traveler5898 You are terribly wrong! And why is that? Cause BPS Knives marked their steel as 1066? Well, it is not 1066,actually it is 65Г (65G) soviet era spring steel, which is close but a bit different from your regular 1066. If treated properly, it outperforms 1095 in any aspect (toughness, tensile strength, it won't brake or chip, edge retention) except initial hardness, but do you really need more than 60 for knives like these. I know that BPS are not the best ones, but under 150$ price tag, they are better choice as bushcraft/camping knives.

fair enough, and than after a little use you have to resharpen it yourself. So in the end all your knives are as sharp as you can get them yourself. And I don't use knives ones out of the box and buy new ones when they get dull. So it's about edge retention, ease of resharpening, and fun using it. Greetings Wim
@DimitrosSJ
@DimitrosSJ Жыл бұрын
@@traveler5898 maybe you meant strope not resharpen? Cause in my understanding resharpening is needed when you've damaged cutting edge, got some chips or rols. Otherwise there is no need to resharpen your knife, just a couple of strope touches from either side and here you go. From my experience, incluiding on going war here in Ukraine, BPS Knives showed themselves as reliable, strong and functional tools. No, it's not tactical/combat knife for sure, but for it's prescribed tasks and some more, my Adventurer holds exceptionally strong, even helped to eliminate a few ruzzian orks. If to compare with Ka-Bar usmc bowie made of 1095, the BPS Adventurer is noticeably better in edge retention while still easier and faster to resharpen or strope. And I saw broken 1095 blade knives, big and mean combat knives, but never saw any broken BPS, there are plenty of BPS within Ukraineian militaries as they were almost officialy issued to our troops. This was the help from BPS company to our army. Just for you to know - they never stopped production, even in the hardest monthes of 2022, under misile strikes and artilery shelling, March and April.
