"WILSON!!!" Fun Fact: This movie was filmed in two parts, with a one year break in between for Tom Hanks to get into shape for the rest of the movie. In that time, Robert Zemeckis filmed an entire other movie, "What Lies Beneath" (2000). He even used the same crew for both movies to ensure everyone was available and had steady work in between. Also, I love that the writer knew, I'm gonna make people cry over a volleyball before this movie ends.

I went to see both that year. It was a great year in movies, because I saw Unbreakable, Hannibal, and Chocolat that year as well. I remember being in awe of him doing this because both movies were excellent. Robert Zumekis is responsible for some of the best movies of my childhood. Honestly, I don't know why he isn't considered among Spielberg and Lucas as one of the Kings of 80s Blockbusters. The Back to the Future Trilogy alone solidifies this. But he also gave us who Framed Roger Rabbit and Romancing the Stone/ Jewel of the Nile as well.

But there is also a silver lining so to speak. One of the boxes he kept unopened i believe or maybe he opened it i dont remember tbh ended up being the box he delivers to that one chick at the end of the movie who very clearly has an interest in him. So think about it. He had the package belonging to the next woman he would fall in love with. The angel wings on both the package and the metal statue she was making is a hint to this. Furthermore she sent another package to her husband probly soon to be ex husband.

Chuck and Kelly was not meant be A pivotal part of his fireside speech at the end is " Tommorow The Sun will rise , who knows what THE TIDE will bring " In the beginning of the movie we see the sign above ranch gate with the angel wings Bettina and her husbands names are on it , next we see the husband in Russia with another women receiving the Package with the Salsa Bettina sent him . Fast forward yes Chuck loved Kelly but she had moved on and had a family , chuck did the decent thing , he knew he could not be the reason to tear apart her family his love for her wouldn't let him do that , he knew it was time to move on that's why he gave her back the watch it was a family heirloom that belonged in her family. Now the " Kismet " (destiny) part as Chuck is walking up to the Ranch to return the Angel Wing package as he looks at the sign above the gate the Husbands name is gone it's just Bettina's name on the sign , Chuck was happy to have Kellys picture with him on the Island but it was on Bettina's package that he wrote This Package Saved My Life . It was Bettina THE TIDE had brought him all along . As he was standing at the cross roads and looks down the road towards Bettinas' ranch as the camera pans out we are left to ponder did he go back to Bettina's Ranch ? Damn Straight He Did . . . It was Kismet ! It was meant to be .

The same plane who gave him the pilot with shoes and all the packages to survive. And then the porta potty side panel was also in the shape of the wings kinda and was used as a sail. Wilson his friend on the island had the rival name to the man who would marry his ex fiance. (Spalding) this movie is honestly on the level of signs with mel gibson when it comes to small things to notice

i think the ending is a metaphor. so at the beginning chuck is obsessed with time and control. the island took that from him and only gave him one choice -survive. when the rope snapped during his trial hanging he also lost that choice too. then the sail arrived and he had another choice - leave the island. at the end he is presented with three choices, (drive west, drive north, or follow her) a literal crossroads, and even though we know what choice he'll make (follow that lovely border Collie home to a lovely love interest) but leaving it unshown and ambiguous is a nod to chuck now having choices again and being able to appreciate what he has, rather than giving his precious time to a job and prioritising that over the things that make life worth living. loved your reaction, at times it seemed like Asia was giving chuck directions 😂 😂

Something that's very easy to miss is the first time we see their apartment, it pans over a hearth or shelf where we can briefly see he got a reward or certificate for camping/survival skills as well as sailing. Through his job he knows a lot about keeping time, and we see he's good at math when he plots out where he may have wrecked. It shows how he knew to do a lot of what he did on the island but still went through some trial and error. He was uniquely prepared to survive.

Much like Jurassic Park, seeing this in the movie theater gave us a new experience again. The visuals and the sounds, all an improvement and higher-tech than GenX experienced 7 years prior to Jurassic Park. Mind you, the first Lord of the Rings installment was only a year later. GenX lived through extreme changes in technology at a huge pace!

The question at the end of the movie is which direction does Chuck go. You can assume that he goes back to the woman’s place. Those angel wings led him to her since the island Something I didn’t catch the first time I saw the movie was that when the first FedEx driver goes to her house there are two names on the metal sign. When the package she sends is delivered to her husband he is with another woman. At the end when Chuck returns the package, the husband’s name has been removed from the sign implying the woman is divorced and now single.

He wanted to get off that island for the whole 4 years he was stuck there, but check out the look on his face as he was leaving the island on the raft, it was almost like he was sad to leave. His time on that island was not for nothing -- he returned to society a whole new man with a new life and new mindset. In the beginning, we see him out of shape, loud and energetic, seemingly obsessed with time. After the island, he looked healthier overall, calm and mellow, and all the rest of it. He explains the rest in his dialogue with a friend while holding on to a glass of beverage with ice in it. There are quite a few philosophical undertones to this film, and I know I haven't figured them all out, but I know this much -- "Nature heals." -- that's my personal motto. Great movie, one of my favorites. Glad to have seen it at the theater on its release.

What a beautiful movie, what a journey. The Wilson scenes are very touching. Wilson literally came into existence from Chuck's own blood and a need for a friend, creating that special bond. Amazing storytelling. Keep in mind Robert Zemeckis directed this as well as Forrest Gump which is probably why it has a similar feel. He also directed Back to the Future of course.

i just watched you two react to Forrest Gump last night and immediately hoped you'd watch this! Back in high school, we would have a free day in gym class once a week and my friends and I would play different team games but all we had was the Wilson volleyball to play with. Every time the ball went out of bounds, one of us would always scream "WILSOOOOON!!!!!." And mind you, this was only like 10 years ago, that's how iconic that scene is.

I like how the movie is actually "Cast Away" instead of "Castaway". It's kind of a play on words... The movie is not just about him being a castaway on a deserted island. It's also about how he had to cast away, or let go of, everything about his past life before the island: his job, his city life, his future wife & children... everything. He had to cast it all away in order to keep living and move forward in his life.

after SO many times seeing this I finally realized that by going for the locket and ignoring the lifebelt, Chuck survived. He would have immediately floated up into an air pocket and suck with the plane, but instead he was saved by the split in the fuselage! and although it had gotten snagged on something inside the plane, that's what centered it perfectly beneath the split so he would float straight up and out! So technically Kelly saved him all the way back to the moment of the crash- not just as emotional and spiritual support ON the island... Learn something new every time you re-watch a truly great film :)

My favorite scene, which is overlooked and I don't hear mentioned in relation to the movie is when he finally got past the last big wave and realized he was out there in the open ocean and couldn't turn back even if he wanted to and for a moment, that hit him - I think we have all had those times in our lives when we leave something behind, or a chapter in our lives, or we make it through a loss. Although the chapter closed may be difficult, and maybe we are moving onto something better, for a moment or two we look back. Whether we look back with sadness or hope for something better, change can be scary. In his case in the movie, his future was unknown but he knew he had to try to leave and move forward. Many of us have made those tough choices in life and know that feeling. Such an excellent movie! Great reaction Asia and BJ! ❤

This movie ranks in my top five favorite movies. I have watched many people react to this movie because it is so special to me and thus I love to see how other people respond to it. This movie is many things. To me one thing this movie is is a compelling metaphor for the power of choice. Chuck Noland goes off one night to work, and is expecting to get home to his girlfriend. It seems certain he was planning to propose to her. But things don't go as planned. He crashes in the South Pacific and then survives, alone, for four years. His rescue is also a miracle. Consider how he was rescued only after he had let go (Wilson, the oars) of everything, even hope. He had resigned himself to die in the middle of nowhere with nobody knowing how much he had suffered. But then something intervenes and he is saved...only to find himself back in a world that moved on without him. Just that one fateful choice one December night changed his life forever. Time is also a metaphor interwoven throughout the movie. When he ends up on the island time effectively stops for him. He is stranded both geographically and also in time. You can tell when he gets back to the world of people that he is forever changed (the way he looks at things we take for granted - a car key, a lighter, ice in his glass). I can't imagine not being profoundly changed by that experience. And then there is the ending. Some viewers have theorized that the redhead at the end was the woman that Noland was truly meant to end up with. Fate cast him away for four years. He was derailed, but the derailment actually led him to another possibility that perhaps was better for him. Sometimes when we end up derailed in life we actually might be cast forward towards a better life path. Being able to let go of the past and what we thought was best for ourselves to then be open to something bigger and better is something that can be so hard to do. I have been derailed in my own life and thus have found myself meditating on the power of choice. I see this movie as being something that dramatizes the power of choice. I knew Asia wouldn't take well to watching Tom Hanks do the tooth removal scene! LOL. Have your blanket at the ready. PS You two are some of my favorite reactors! Whenever Asia watches a movie I can tell she really jumps fully into the experience.

Really impressive that you understood that “Wilson” was not just a ball but his (somewhat) human looking face actually gave “Chuck” someone to relate to. Better than talking to a green coconut! Lol. FUN FACTS! In the original script, the wing package did get opened and it contained 2 jars of salsa verde and a letter. This package belonged to the girl Chuck meets at the crossroads (and she's the welder you see in the beginning) and it was addressed to her husband (seen also at the beginning cheating on her). The letter expressed her hopes that her husband would come back to her and they could work things out. If you notice the difference between the ranch sign from the beginning vs the end of the movie, only her name is on the sign and her now ex husband's name is missing. Chuck ends up with her though and his name gets added to the sign. Tom Hanks jokes that the package contained a waterproof satellite cellphone lol
