Cast Iron Leader Pipe Leak Repair

Coming off a 5 week plus lack of business, I get a call from a customer who's having some waterproofing of the rear foundation wall. The laborers found an extremely corroded 3" cast iron roof drain that need some tender loving care.
In this Cast Iron Leader Pipe Repair video, I replace the extra heavy cast iron pipe with service weight no-hub cast iron and underground approved Husky no-hub couplings. Recommended using 3" schedule 40 P.V.C., but they said NO WAY! LOL! Enjoy the video.

Nice work. When our old multi fuel boiler was replaced, the basement was cold because all that cast iron was not there to throw off heat. Now I wish I would have learned how to maintain that old beast.

Bob, amazing and entertaining video. You see so many odd things in homes that are 100 or more years old. That steam boiler is something else. I almost bought a home in Queens that was built in 1930 where the entire boiler was encased in asbestos. Thank goodness the good lord intervened and I did not make that purchase. I think it was a Thatcher that was converted from coal to oil years ago. Stay well.

Bob, speaking of cast iron, I would love to see you do a video on how to go about easily breaking cast Iron steam fittings; I saw my father do it but I have always been nervous about damaging other pipes and fittings when trying to break fittings.

In Kansas 30 years ago storm water downspouts had to be disconnected from sewers and drained out onto the ground.

I get it, I often do that if the homeowner decides not to make a major repair. I warn them that there could be an issue in the winter when that waters freezes in the drive and walkways.

New to your channel. Very interesting content! Thank you for putting it out. I'm curious as to why you replaced the old pipe with cast iron. Isn't PVC the preferred standard now? Wouldn't it last longer? Perhaps my thoughts on that are misguided. Would love to hear your reasoning. EDIT: Just read down in the comments further and found my answer. "I wanted to do it in schedule 40 p.v.c., but the homeowner did not want it!" That's crazy talk, but the "customer is always right". Good stuff Bob keep them coming.

My 123 year old house in Bushwick has a clogged leader pipe. Tried to snake it with a big snake machine with no results. What could it be? The sanitary line flows and the backyard drain flows too.

It could just be packed with mud, unless you're using a professional grade drain machine or jetting machine it could be a problem. It could also be broken and your cable is just going into the ground? Maybe a camera inspection is in order?

Anything is possible, but i've seen situations where sewer flies have gotten into a home from an open line.

Why on earth would a roof leader line that carries rain water and runs outside the house make a turn into the house beneath the foundation?! Is this tied to the sewer lateral?

Yes, it is tied into the combined sewer inside the home out thru a house trap into the city sewer.

Is that the pressuretrol on the top? Is there any LWCO or automatic fill?

That's a steam guage, the pressure troll is mounted on the top of the boiler (black control). NO LWCO or Auto-Fill
