Cast Iron Skillet Seasoning & Restoration - How to Season Cast Iron Pan

Between my other projects I made this short restoration video of a rusty cast iron skillet pan that I bought for really cheap at a garage sale. In this video I will show how to clean a rusty skillet, and how to season it.

Very interesting. I restored a very similar, but smaller, cast iron pan for my own use. I used my sandblaster. It gets into places that a wire brush and steel wool can't touch. I've used that cast iron pan every day for a few years now and its great. I did a video of it but can't find it on YT so maybe it never uploaded.

Looking at the surface of the pan at 1:28 it seems to be very rough and as an example egg would get stuck it very easily without the use of a lot of oil. It looks nice but should the bottom of the pan be sanded down to a smoother finish before use?

Better wipe off all excess oil. Otherwise it will not polymerize completely and leave a rubbery, sticky mess instead of glass hard, dry seasoning. The skillet shouldn't look wet, it should only have a nice, silky matte shine. All you need is a micro thin layer of oil. The thinner the layer, the harder the seasoning. Everything else was nice. If you live in the US, you may wanna try Barkeeper's Friend cleaning powder instead of baking soda. It works great on rust that wasn't removed by the vinegar. Just make sure you give the skillet a good cleaning (wish dish soap) afterwards to get rid of the stuff.
