Oh where were you when I was restoring our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove??? It had sat in a cabin next to our dairy barn for decades and the roof leaked! The cooking surface was a rusty mess. We moved it to the house barn and it was my project. I did not want to sand blast or use chemicals. I opted for some extreme measures in my book, but I was desperate. I soaked the surface with coke, then wiped it off, followed by olive oil and fine steel wool and lots of rags. And worked my way over the stove. We set the stove in the yard and lit a fire. It smelled like an Italian restaurant :-) She has graced our kitchen now since 2016 and looks new. No stove blacking was used. ~ Diane

Just been chatting to my 97 year old Dad. I've an old cast iron pot he gave me. He remembers his little mum pick up that heavy pot back in the 192o's , made even heavier with the rabbit stew and dumplings in it. I now have it next to my woodburner full of kindling and am thinking of restoring the beloved rusty old thing and maybe cook with it. Reminds me of my Dad and grandparents , makes my heart swell.

You did the best job I've ever seen removing the rust from cast iron. I have this type pot that my mother use to call her baked bean pot. She stopped using it back in the early 70s when new fancy cookware came along. The old bean pot was put in my father's barn where he used it for dipping horse feed. The pot then got thrown into an unfloored room in the barn where it stayed for the last 48 years almost. It is rusted brown now. I'm gonna use your way of cleaning up the old bean pot. Thank you so much for doing this video.

@@castIroncookware Both my folks would be glad to see me clean up the old bean pot...and thanks to you I can do that now! My mother cooked much food in cast iron pots and skillets. Not just beans but biscuits, cornbread, muffins shaped like ears of corn and regular muffins, cakes, even pies and cobblers in the huge skillets along with fried chicken, pork chops, then gravy from the drippings and such. I still have her other cast iron stuff which lasts forever. ...You do a real good channel. Thank you.

I was watching a channel today and had to comment. The woman was telling people lodge was not collectible because it was a new company that had just been around a few years. @@mrsrowe11 i recommend that you wipe off what you can immediately. If it is stuck on, warm an inch or two of water for a few minutes and then the stuck on stuff should wipe out. If need be use a stainless steel scrubber.
@castIroncookware
@castIroncookware 4 жыл бұрын
@@mrsrowe11 the sooner after you use it easier it is to clean. On especially hard to get off crust from cooking, you can fill the pan halfway full of water and feed it to almost a boil. Turn off the stove and let it sit for a little bit. Once it gets cold enough to handle the burnt on food will usually come right off with a scrubby and a little bit of dish soap.

I have an old cast kettle we use on a tripod over a camp fire. One season water was accidentally left in it and it rusted....BADLY. As I was just about to take a wire wheel grinder to it and start the seasoning process over, a friend came by and saw what was going on and said stop. This was his(quick) fix for the rusty kettle. Fill it 3/4 full with clean water, bring to a rolling boil over an open flame (outdoor only fix) at the boiling point quickly throw in a handful of baking soda (stand back, it foams up fast.) did this twice and could not believe the results. Kettle looked like new on the inside.Seasoned it and was back in use that afternoon. No wire brush, sanding or scraping needed.Thanks Skip !!

Love this and thank you so much. My husband brought home what he thought was a gigantic planter from a neighbor who was getting rid of his dead mother's old junk. It is, in fact, a huge cast iron cooking pot. The kind that the old timers would put over a fire to cook huge stews or boil down cane in. God bless its heart, it is rusty like crazy because it has been left out in the weather for years! I didn't know what to do to remove all the rust that has accumulated inside and out, but, thanks to your video, I know what to try. Will do this as soon as the rain ends here because I want that precious find to be restored to all her former glory. God bless from me here in southwest Virginia...a mountain girl through and through.

You got lucky all the way around, I went looking for mine to find out my hubby used it as an oil pan draining my truck and got rid of it. Needless to say it wasn’t a quiet time for about 6 months in the house. Our son was about 3 kept saying daddy want gum gum you dum dum 😆

How am I ever going to get all that rust off? I've never used this lid and it looks terrible." I will be doing this pot cleaning this week. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🤗

Wow....what a difference made on the Dutch oven. That's amazing. I had a couple of cast iron skillets with the same amount of rust. I didn't use the method you used with the 50/50 vinegar and water, however I did use dish soap and water first along with the sos pads to clear and clean them. I managed to get all the surface rust off. I did follow everthing you did after to season the pans with the exception I turned the heat on the stove and let the pans smoke on top stove instead of the oven. Set the alarm off several times but the pans look great. 👍 I will definitely try the vinegar and water method once I locate the other cast iron in the garage. Thanks for all these fantastic tips. Can't wait to view your other and up coming videos.😄😄😄😄👏👏👏👏

Having fun Food tastes much better cooked in cast iron. I use mine for fired eggs, omelets (I put in oven at 300). Have fun. If you have glass top stove check the warranty. Some you can't use copper or cast iron.

Man... I remember the waterless cookware people at the county fair always bashing cast iron when I was a kid. Because of that, I always thought cast iron was nasty. Thank you for showing how easy restoring cast iron can be. I have some old Dutch ovens that were given to me by my mom and they're rusty and gross. I did a little research and though I had to be Nikola Tesla in order to remove the rust and restore them. I restored one yesterday using vinegar and a Scotchbrite pad and it turned out great. Doing another one today.

My neighbor was putting a brand new rusty sauce pan in the trash but I rescued it! I started your method but I didn’t get all of the rust off but I got 90% off. I don’t have a scrubby but I plan to get one this weekend. I’ll have to recover my strength before I do scrubbing again lol! It has raised letters & numbers inside on the bottom so the scrubby will have to do the job!😆

Excelente video!
