I had a set on a pump gas 355 that were gasket matched to 1206 intake and the bowls were done with a 205 intake valve. My Camaro went 11.70's with them with a solid cam, Victor jr., and a 750 Holley. They worked good for what they were.

I ran these heads on by 355. I remember when I purchased them from Summit Racing they offered them with the bowls clean up for an extra charge. That’s the ones I chose. 355 with 10.3 to 1. Ultradyne 518 / 536 lift sold camshaft with Victor Jr and 750 Holley. Engine dynoed at 437 HP and 400 LBS of torque. Was in my 69 Z28 street car full interior no cage all steel. Went a best of 11.58 in the 1/4 mile with turbo 400 and 4.56 gear. I had a 4 speed behind it and only went 11.77. Thanks for the video Eric great content as always.

The Sportsman II were my fist brand new heads. Bought them from Supershops and started grinding on them right away, right into the pushrod tube. haha I had to have the pushrod tubes drilled and a press in insert installed. Good times learning the hard way.

You see just how much work is needed to make these work. I bought a pair of GM Phase 2 Bowties (iron) in the early 90's, and 30 to 40 hours later of porting and valve seating (yeah, I had stones to work with) I had a set of heads. I eventually took one to another shop to be flowed, 262 CFM intake, 223 CFM exhaust. Not great, but the car went 10.7's. I dyno'd a street 406 a year or so ago with the same castings (untouched other than valve jobbed) and that engine struggled to make 400 HP.

Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s when these came out, these were $800 a set. Not $800 each like they are today. And I think the world products sportsman II/dart 2 heads were the same company. I think some old articles were the two separate companies today were one back then. But I don’t know. I can’t find any old original history. I’m sure there are some hot rod, or magazines from the day that tell the story. I remember reading about when these came out, one of the magazines covered them, maybe all of them. So the world products heads, all cast iron like factory heads, also the first ever replacement cylinder 7:52 head to get the approval for 49 state legal emission approved heads, because they had the egr cross over. These heads were available with straight or angle plugs, in 72 or 64 cc chambers. Screw in studs and guide plates, 200cc intake port heads. Originally these were made in Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island Ny. Then they moved, I think in Florida now.

At least these are still available. In the 200cc intake port version with 64 and 72 cc chambers. The 220 Motown heads come with 2.08 valves and 64 cc chambers.

love the content Eric. I can remember home porting these cast iron heads took hours and hours. Usually finished in the low 280 cfm range. To bad I did not understand flow at lower lift and always paid attention to max lift numbers (mostly around 600-650) i am sure my throats were way to big. Oh how far as a industry cylinder heads have come. Wish I had known more about lift and "under the curve" flow numbers before i purchased a pair of 235cc iron Australian Made Cylinder Heads. Do not remember the brand. They worked ok but I was disappointed when there was no difference at the track (who could afford a dyno session in 1997)

Spot on memories about these heads man. I spent dayze porting these suckers out. I would put cast-iron seat inserts in for quick guide swaps cut down the tops of the guides or double Springs small block Chevy heads at around 200 cc was a big deal back then and handling these heads the right way deliver the goods. And for cast-iron heads, they were pretty crack resistant ….. great stuff, man… keep on rockin

I guess I'm an oddball 'cause I really like porting cast iron heads. I used to spend hours and hours on the old 487/493 castings as well as the double humps. A lot of people were on the 882 casting just prior to the Sportsman and Iron Eagle but I found them too thin for aggressive porting. I am not sure but I think the Sportsmans were the foundation for the GM bowtie variant in the final form before Vortecs. I have a set of those now to work for personal use, the market is getting saturated with them around my area with all the local tracks going to sealed crate motor rules which sux in my opinion.

Biggest factor for me in choosing a Vortec or Sportsman is reliability. I have seen way too many cracked Vortecs. In the earlier 2000's I was running a veary busy head bench and they just kept comming in and I kept throwing them in the scrap bin. They were like the modern 624 castings.

A thick deck aftermarket iron head is a better deal. Summit House Brand Vortecs.. or EQ's.. or Dart Platinums.. You want flow and reliability. If someone offered me a choice of used Vortecs or used Sportsmans.. I'd take the Sportsmans and just plan on grinding on them a little bit to grab an extra 10 or 15 cfm.

I used these heads on my 358 modified back in the 90's the only heads that were really available back then were Brodix G.M. performance heads and the old double humps, these heads made very good power BUT, when it came to repairing them finding seats was a huge issue, the deck of these heads was quite a bit thicker than a G.M. heads when you're limited to a flat top engine it was crucial to have that extra thick deck.im not sure, Eric could tell you better but I think the runners may have been raised a bit too but don't remember. For and "out of the box" 23degree head these were really good!

Back when those Sportsman's were popular, I used Canfeld & GM Bowtie heads. A old racer, mentor told me they suck without 500hrs of porting. The GM racing shit was highly desirable back in the 80s. Those old Canfeld heads were pretty good too. Brodix heads back then costed a fortune and were mostly found on Sprint cars. Im speaking of the 80s era. In the 90s, alot more choices started poppin up. Used alot of DART heads and Pro Topline heads in the 90s. Had a pair of Edelbrock Victor heads, those worked pretty good. Expensive for the day tho.

I later found out how well those round elastic hair bands worked at getting that crap out. I tried everything I could afford to keep the metal out of my nose and eyes. Hot steam showers and often hanging my head over a pot of steaming water with a towel over my head. That was relief. I loved the work, but it took its toll after a while. I’m just wondering about all of the beryllium copper I machined. All of the clutch dust and head gaskets I had to clean off. You had to really love your job

I know Bill Mitchell changed the name of the old Dart II head to Sportsman II head, because they changed foundry's. The heads were named for the Dart Foundry where they were cast. Mitchell, not wanting to get stuck with changing the head's name again, simply chose a generic term for the head, so it didn't matter who cast those heads.

I had some ex F5000 which in the past had been 'gun' heads Those Darts are quite poor in finish than the ones I used in the very early 90s. Though I ported mine within reason as big as they would go. A lot of work and out in the sun so I could see! Why did they ever make 76cc? It never made sense. Mine were 64cc cut to around 62cc after I finished the chambers. I used 2.08 intakes. They were sold to me as 195cc intake runners. They were never flowed They worked far better than my ported 462 Fueliies. Yet the low speed driveability was still good. Street parades etc and just driving through the pit paddock. Original Victor Jnr I then went to the Victor race heads and 2925 intake that made more power and had nothing under about 3500 rpm. Driving the pit paddock was slip the clutch the whole way.15k limits were a pain with a 2.2 first gear. All the GM heads would struggle to take larger dia springs. 292s were better ofcoure as they were made as a performance head. And the OEM pockets did not really allow for race cams of the late 80s. Factory heads were a good deal lighter than the Darts which were heavy. The Darts had machined rocker cover rails as well. And they were slightly taller

I remember back then everyone wanted double hump heads .. These days if I see someone selling double hump heads on craigslist I tell them they will never sell them they are simply not worth the time and effort even if mint let alone all the money you would need to restore a set .. double hump heads are for people doing numbers matching restorations where they absolutely need that particular casting to finish their engine. Other then that double humps are rusty paper weights.

How much would it cost to have you port a set of those heads? Will you be doing those heads to see what works best? I remember in one of my David Vizard books that he primarily concentrated on the bowls and guide slimming to get the most gains. Anything to lighten them up a bit would be good! The lighter they get, the faster you'll go even without more power! I'd even port the coolant passages! (Actually, a good idea if you do plan to port them-weigh them before and after!). I hope you feel better soon Eric. God Bless you my friend.

I think hvh has some cnc programs for several iron castings, also talk to Brezenski, they do strictly iron head porting.

Can you make 550hp with these? If not, what do you think they could make realistically?

I still run these heads on my drag car. 363cu in SBC. 13.5/1 comp on methanol. Makes about 625HP. Car weighs just over 3000lbs, has gone 9.60 at 140mph.

So in the demo world where stuff gets super hot, is aluminum or cast iron the best?
@timothyesmond7358
@timothyesmond7358 2 жыл бұрын
I use cast iron. Aluminum works but after a few extremely hot runs it's time for a new head gasket. Cast iron in the multi-layer steelhead gaskets with ARP head bolts and race fuel or better yet methanol gasket will last until the engine melts down

Iron holds up well, aluminum can be welded when it cracks

Eric , do the Vortec heads have the same cracking issues that the Magnum heads have , in my opinion that the OE's making everything lighter ?
