November 28, 2024 - This is one of the oldest Christmas hymns - was written when a man was deep in grief yet still has faith in Jesus Christ, who never fails us, even when He's all we have left - we discover He is all we need!!! Jesus came to tear down the wall of hostility between Father God and us - that wall was death - the wages of sin is death - Jesus Christ paid that penalty! Hallelujah!!!

It's not that old, as the text was written during the Civil War. If you really want to hear some truly old ones, listen to "Corde natus ex parentis," or "Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris," which are truly some old ones. But most of the Christmas carols and hymns we enjoy are older than this poem and its various musical settings.

No one but God knows the day of Jesus' birth, but the day we choose to celebrate His birth could have easily been in April or July. The day is not important, but what is important that we celebrate Jesus, God's greatest gift to mankind for the salvation of our souls. I thank God constantly for Jesus for without Him I would be doomed. He is my HOPE. Thank you Father God for giving me Jesus. Happy Birthday Jesus. I love you. shiphrahhopeful on this day, I pray you have peace & Love, Jesus in you.

Yes! This is an important concept. It does not matter WHICH day was determined to be set aside as the Feast of the Nativity, only that He is the Incarnate Word of God who came to dwell with us. Something to celebrate, indeed.

It was revealed through the prophet Joseph Smith in the 1830s that Christ was born on April 6. But, you're right, it really doesn't matter, as long as we follow him, have him to be our Savior, and keep sacred covenants with him.

Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote this poem, that later became a carol, on Christmas Eve during the Civil War. He lost his wife a year or so before in a tragic accident when her dress caught fire. He was also injured with serious burns when he tried to save her but it was too late. Then his son was seriously injured in the war. He begins the poem in total despair but by the end, he has renewed faith and peace. Love this version of this beautiful song! Forgot to mention that this was his second wife. His first wife died after a miscarriage. Poor man had so much tragedy and I think he also lost a daughter at some point. 😢

Yes, there is a movie from 2022 called, "I Heard the Bells" that recently aired commercial free on Great American Christmas channel about those exact events you described. It was well done and gives a whole new perspective on the song especially when you review the whole poem with all of the stanzas that are rarely read or sung. He was amazingly gifted.

Bobbyportell9503…..I’m here Nov 2024. God the Father is going to tell Jesus to come get his bride (all believers) in the rapture very soon. The earth will go into the dark time of 7 year Tribulation (Daniel’s 70th Week). At the end of that time Jesus Christ is returning to earth on a white horse (Rev 19:11) to conquer his enemies and set up His 1,000 year Millennial Kingdom. All who were raptured will be with him. Only then will there be true peace on earth. All of these things must happen because God has already told us they are going to. Jesus is our hope and salvation!

This song was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1863. On Christmas day, 1863, Longfellow-a 57-year-old widowed father of six children, the oldest of which had been nearly paralyzed as his country fought a war against itself-wrote a poem seeking to capture the dynamic and dissonance in his own heart and the world he observes around him. He heard the Christmas bells that December day and the singing of “peace on earth” (Luke 2:14), but he observed the world of injustice and violence that seemed to mock the truthfulness of this optimistic outlook. The theme of listening recurred throughout the poem, eventually leading to a settledness of confident hope even in the midst of bleak despair.
@jonhandel8159
@jonhandel8159 8 жыл бұрын
Chaloner Close. Longfellow wrote "Christmas Bells" in 1864. But everything else is correct. The poem/carol was born out of grief and resentment, but indicates a softened heart and the eternal hope God provides.

I couldn't agree more with your words, ... "Turn our hearts ❤ toward God" ... as illustrated by the following sentences delineating the use of music to deal with pain. That said, the negative influences of this world are designed to make our heart sick through emotional & physical pain resulting in a given person turning to music as one source of comfort to the body. The painful realty of this existence gives rise to the birth of music in two forms, earthly & HEAVENLY. Earthly music speaks to the experiences of this world through the singer-song writer’s eyes. Oftentimes drug use (i.e. alcohol, smokes, marijuana, cocaine, opioids, benzos and propofol to name a few) is intertwined with the survival of an artist to deal with the pressure of performing in order to stay relevant in the music industry, and to serve as fuel for creativity. As a result, music celebrities develop a tendency to sin against their body, through excessive drug use, for not measuring up to or to satisfy the demands of their music. Any earthly joy they experience is darkened by the heavy burden of performing and the loss of privacy. The end users of their music become fans because the lyrics are relatable and the sound of the singer’s voice & rhythm helps them cope with the pains of this reality. Unfortunately, this band aid approach is only a time out from the hurt and in the meantime we are fortifying its wall with painful memories waiting in line. Who can save us from wounds that are silent, wordless and cruel all the while tearing us apart inch by inch on the inside, which could radically accelerate the demise of the human body? I will use caps as emphasis to show the honest reverence for GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY when writing about HEAVENLY music in the paragraphs below. That INVINCIBLE DIVINE be our HEAVENLY FATHER, WHO THROUGH HIS SON’S MISSION HAS INSPIRED believers to write songs that sing of HIS LIFE GIVING LOVE to deal with emotional & physical pain, economic instability, mortality and the emotional instability of others with the motive of winning over souls for HIS KINGDOM. The melody & theme of HEAVENLY music is hateful and intolerable to the devil, a spirit which causes us to be blinded of the effects of sin and is responsible for the woes of this world such as melancholy, anguish, tribulation and trial. These agitations of the soul create a heavy burden for the lost and could lead him or her to be hostile of songs that sing about GOD’S GLORY. This makes it clear that we cannot win the spiritual battle by our own strength. Moreover, on earth the devil has no equal. GOD has provided us with the ONE WHO CAN AND WILL LIFT the heavy burden of sin's guilt from a given sinner's heart if he or she (through faith) would open their understanding to Psalms (starting with the focus on Psalms 51:1-10 KJV), and hymns/songs giving praise to HIM for the purpose of being persuaded, converted and healed by the HOLY SPIRIT from within by transforming your body/temple into a meeting place for you and the KING OF THE AGES to commune as friends through the born again experience (repentance manifesting itself in a changed life). It is only here that the fears of tomorrow will diminish, the blessed assurance is given that you are HIS and HE LIVES. Once the blessed assurance is known in prayer (through the confession of wanting salvation from one’s sinful nature, combine with admitting that JESUS CHRIST is LORD and believing in one’s heart that GOD raised HIM from the dead to deliver us from sin's guilt) the world can never take it away because the world didn’t give it to you.

The story behind I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day by Tom Stewart December 20, 2001 One of America's best known poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), contributed to the wealth of carols sung each Christmas season, when he composed the words to "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" on December 25th 1864. The carol was originally a poem, "Christmas Bells," containing seven stanzas. Two stanzas were omitted, which contained references to the American Civil War, thus giving us the carol in its present form. The poem gave birth to the carol, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," and the remaining five stanzas were slightly rearranged in 1872 by John Baptiste Calkin (1827-1905), who also gave us the memorable tune. When Longfellow penned the words to his poem, America was still months away from Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865; and, his poem reflected the prior years of the war's despair, while ending with a confident hope of triumphant peace As with any composition that touches the heart of the hearer, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" flowed from the experience of Longfellow-- involving the tragic death of his wife Fanny and the crippling injury of his son Charles from war wounds. Henry married Frances Appleton on July 13th 1843, and they settled down in the historic Craigie House overlooking the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They were blessed with the birth of their first child, Charles, on June 9th 1844, and eventually, the Longfellow household numbered five children-- Charles, Ernest, Alice, Edith, and Allegra. Alice, the Longfellows' third child and first daughter, was delivered, while her mother was under the anesthetic influence of ether-- the first in North America. Tragedy struck both the nation and the Longfellow family in 1861. Confederate Gen. Pierre G. T. Beauregard fired the opening salvos of the American Civil War on April 12th, and Fanny Longfellow was fatally burned in an accident in the library of Craigie House on July 10th. The day before the accident, Fanny Longfellow recorded in her journal: "We are all sighing for the good sea breeze instead of this stifling land one filled with dust. Poor Allegra is very droopy with heat, and Edie has to get her hair in a net to free her neck from the weight." After trimming some of seven year old Edith's beautiful curls, Fanny decided to preserve the clippings in sealing wax. Melting a bar of sealing wax with a candle, a few drops fell unnoticed upon her dress. The longed for sea breeze gusted through the window, igniting the light material of Fanny's dress-- immediately wrapping her in flames. In her attempt to protect Edith and Allegra, she ran to Henry's study in the next room, where Henry frantically attempted to extinguish the flames with a nearby, but undersized throw rug. Failing to stop the fire with the rug, he tried to smother the flames by throwing his arms around Frances-- severely burning his face, arms, and hands. Fanny Longfellow died the next morning. Too ill from his burns and grief, Henry did not attend her funeral. (Incidentally, the trademark full beard of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow arose from his inability to shave after this tragedy.) The first Christmas after Fanny's death, Longfellow wrote, "How inexpressibly sad are all holidays." A year after the incident, he wrote, "I can make no record of these days. Better leave them wrapped in silence. Perhaps someday God will give me peace." Longfellow's journal entry for December 25th 1862 reads: "'A merry Christmas' say the children, but that is no more for me." Almost a year later, Longfellow received word that his oldest son Charles, a lieutenant in the Army of the Potomac, had been severely wounded with a bullet passing under his shoulder blades and taking off one of the spinal processes. The Christmas of 1863 was silent in Longfellow's journal. Finally, on Christmas Day of 1864, he wrote the words of the poem, "Christmas Bells." The reelection of Abraham Lincoln or the possible end of the terrible war may have been the occasion for the poem. Lt. Charles Longfellow did not die that Christmas, but lived. So, contrary to popular belief, the occasion of writing that much loved Christmas carol was not due to Charles' death. Longfellow's Christmas bells loudly proclaimed, "God is not dead." Even more, the bells announced, "Nor doth He sleep." God's Truth, Power, and Justice are affirmed, when Longfellow wrote: "The wrong shall fail, the right prevail." The message that the Living God is a God of Peace is proclaimed in the close of the carol: "Of peace on Earth, good will to men." Christmas Bells" (The original poem, complete with all seven stanzas) "I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead; nor doth he sleep! The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Walk by faith, not by sight. Jesus says he will NEVER leave or forsake you. I dreamt of my mom shortly after she died. I was walking up behind her, in heaven. She turned, saw me, and said, "Oh, you're here. I just got here myself." It's been 12 years. I hope it means there is no sense of time for those who have gone ahead of us. Also listen to Mark Schultz - "Different Kind of Christmas". That encouraged me.

The negative influences of this world are designed to make our heart sick through emotional & physical pain resulting in a given person turning to music as one source of comfort to the body.

By rearranging the verses of the poem they subtly change its meaning in a clever way. It becomes about how the relentless chiming of the message of justice, goodwill and peace defeats nihilism, cynicism and despair. My favourite bit is when the narrator, having dismissed the familiar "mild and sweet", naive message of Christmas as disconnected from the realities of life, is then haunted and niggled by the ringing bells, and asks if anyone else hears them?

Tomorrow is Christmas. In the midst of the wrapping paper, lights, and holiday merriment -- let us remember the true reason for Christmas. Jesus, who is God, wrapped himself in humanity to be born as a humble babe. He who never sinned took ALL of our sins upon himself and died a vicious death. That's not the end...He rose three days later...Victorious...He paid the price for us to be able to live with Him for eternity. The question at Christmas is not whether you believe in Santa. It's do you believe in Jesus? I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and that you know the Jesus I know.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow had already lost his beloved wife, Fanny, in 1861, after her dress caught fire and she burned to death. "How inexpressibly sad are all holidays," he wrote in his journal that Christmas. A year after Fanny's death, Longfellow noted, "I can make no record of these days. Better leave them wrapped in silence. Perhaps someday God will give me peace." On December 25th, 1862, Longfellow's journal read, "'A merry Christmas' say the children, but that is no more for me." Imagine his sorrow to hear, a year later, of his oldest son, Charles, having been gravely injured while serving the Union in the Civil War. He wrote nothing in his journal for Christmas of 1863. With America still embattled in the war, and though still reeling from his personal loss and resentment, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, for reasons we do not know, wrote the poem "Christmas Bells". Today we know it as the familiar carol "I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day". The following are the original words of Longfellow's poem: I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, and wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men."
