Load the rod. Use the weight of the bait to load the rod tip in the opposite direction of your intended cast, regardless of whether you are side casting , overhand casting or underhand casting (pitching). Create momentum with the bait and learn how to direct the momentum in the direction of the cast. With a spinning reel, you use your Index finger (possibly your middle finger) to control the release of your cast. With a level wind reel, you use your "educated" thumb. I get as much distance out of either rod & reel using a short wrist action than most people get using their entire arm and my casts are also far more accurate than an arm cast.

I always got better distance off of side casting a spinning reel. I pull it back kinda lasso type type motion, using the inertia of the swinging bait (so I don't jerk it off, lol), I'll whip that sucker way out there! I won't use that motion with braided line though, only mono. Braided I just pitch, flip, traditional side cast.

With what, a cannon? A level wind,? A Spinning rig? It doesn't take a video to know most people head for the trailer when a good wind blows up. Essentially. it takes an educated thumb and a bit of free-spool adjustment on your level wind. I like a Zara Spook on main lake points, Deep cranks on rip-rap and heavy egg weights rigged carolina style on creek beds and other steep structure. Hopkins jigging spoons the steep stuff, too.

Hey Ivo, I know I've already commented on this video but I have another question. I know that you fish the Upper Niagara occasionally and wondered if both smallies and largemouth spawn in the river itself? Are there any places in the river that have good areas for spawning bass, or can they be anywhere in the river? Thanks so much for your time and knowledge, I'm a big fan of all your videos!
@thundermistlures11 жыл бұрын
Glad you are enjoying our videos and thanks for being a fan :) The smallies and largemouth could both spawn in the river - they typically like to spawn in gravel beds, although the largemouth are less particular that the small-mouth are :)

I know you want to sell the lures you make, but you do these videos without pushing your lures down our throats, very unlike TV fishing shows. Turn on a TV fishing program and it's nothing but a thirty minute commercial to buy that motor and that rod and that lure, over and over again. Your videos are very different. You act like you want to teach the viewers how to be better fishermen and not simply sale them stuff. You guys and gals do a good job!

Thundermist Lures Would I be right in saying that Pitching would only apply to certain baits to be effective? Other baits like gut, bread and the like you could not do it, though the thought came to me that by tying a short piece of string to your fore finger and looping the string around the hook (Bait allowing you to do this). Then holding the other end of the string between the finger and thumb you could then pull back the tip of your rod. When you are lined up to where you want your bait to go just let go of the string. I expect that if you had a sinker above a swivel you could still do it. Robert
@thundermistlures10 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, if you are holding a sinker, the pitching technique is very doable :)

@murphroberts48914 жыл бұрын
Remove the hooks from a few old baits. Chalk some 1 meter circles at varying distances. Gradually reduce size of circles and increase distances. Eventually you'll be putting the lure in a coffee cup at respectible distances. Don't forget to practice flipping and pitching. The goal here is not distance- it's soft, ripple-free landings that don't spook close-in fish. (Hint: Arc the JIG very close to the surface).
@RogerCillion5 жыл бұрын
I need to practise casting a lot. How to cast light jig/lure ? I always catch the wind and it stops dead in midair...
@thundermistlures5 жыл бұрын
...try keeping your casts close to the water when casting against the wind :)
@RogerCillion5 жыл бұрын
@@thundermistlures It works as you suggested. I saw a video of a guy doing bait skipping. Holding in arm close and swing it from below and not from the side. I practised alot today, and i managed to cast it close to the water and get further out. Stil not as far as with a 21g though :)
@murphroberts48914 жыл бұрын
Most decent rods are labeled for appropriate line and lure weights. Start with using line and lures in the stated ranges. Often, a rod is too long to make a decent cast with and still keep the trajectory low. It's much easier to cast small, light baits with short rods. But don't expect to cast a mile. My ultralight rods are 5 feet long and I have a shorter, ice fishing rod, for pitching under docks and low trees.

@thundermistlures11 жыл бұрын
Suggest practicing with a sinker - this will help you master the technique - then, when casting lures such as crank baits, it's a bit tricky due to the hook situation, but i like to hold the lure in the middle, on the top part only, keeping away from the hooks :)
