This is why I'll always miss Penny on Castle. She was so awesome as a person and did a great job as Captain Gates! Our Sir is leaving :( Jon is hilarious. Love me some Esposito as well. I love how the Devers let Penny have the last dance. It's her swan song and I hope we do see her again on a show that will appreciate her talents and give her a proper send off should she leave. I love Castle, but ABC Studios did her a grave disservice in not giving her or the fans a chance to see her exit properly from the 12th. She deserves more than a line in the dialogue. I hope we meet again, Penny. I have over 30 shows in my dvr. You're more than welcome to join any of them!

The official reason is due to a creative decision with the new showrunners wanting to take the story in a different direction. My best guess is Beckett will be the new Captain, which could work with a time jump, imo, but I truly think it's about money. Nathan and Stana renewed their contracts and likely making double or triple or more than what they were making, so unfortunately that means ABC Studios have to compensate their raise somewhere and with production costing more the longer a show is on... that's usually when we see the writers, crew, and supporting cast and their salaries tweaked with or eliminated altogether. With Penny's experience/resume she was likely getting paid more than Seamus and Jon. We also lost some writers and crew members and Marlowe and Miller are out as well. Creatively they could lose Penny as Captain and bring on someone cheaper than Penny or take the story where it's been heading for a while now... Beckett as Captain. But what the hell do I know? I'm just a viewer who's going to truly miss Penny and Captain Gates :(

eyebrowstj Yeah me too :( When they cut off Montgomery, it took some time for me to get used to the new captain (who turned out to be awesome) but i really hate cast changes.

Same here. We got lucky when they cast PJJ, but if they bring on someone new this time around, it may not be as great as when we had Rueben and PJJ! Fingers crossed that we get another great actor if they bring in a new Captain. I'd love to see Beckett as Captain eventually, but only if we can keep her in the field. They should make her a Lieutenant to start the new season and if S8 is to be the last, then promote her to Captain. I want to keep her in the field as long as I can. I love how she, Castle, and Ryan/Espo work in the field together.
