you don't even need experience in the industry, just pattern recognition. every game that has claimed to have been in development for a long time recently, it comes out that all the work from those years was scrapped and the game was made in 1-2 years. just look at FFXV and ME: andromeda.

I disagree heavily, breath of the wild and persona 5 took ridiculous amounts of time to build for their own reasons. Each game needs as much time as it needs, but it really should try to stay on plan or not announce a release date. A long development usually does mean the studio lost its vision and is cobbling together what they can (crackdown 3 being a perfect example)
@Yal_Rathol5 жыл бұрын
@@montengro234 breath of the wild is a poor example, since it was intended to come out in 2015, delayed for more development to 2016, then delayed to come out with the switch in 2017. what that means is that the game took 2 years to develop, like standard, then they were handed an extra year to polish and then it was ported and shelved so it could come out with the switch.

@@TheProfessor529 glad to find someone who visted the neath and not just the zee and sky. japan doesn't fetishize corporations like the USA does and the workers are guaranteed certain rights, like proper compensation for work and hygenic work environments, but there's an incredibly unhealthy workplace culture over there. everyone knows japan's birthrate is falling, right? the primary reason for that is adults are so overworked they don't have time for relationships or raising a family, so they just go to work for 15 hours, go home and pass out, then wake up and go to work for 15 hours, day in and day out. this also results in japan having an incredibly high suicide rate and the government eventually mandating naptimes in offices so the workers get a healthy number of hours of sleep. this workplace culture is also instilled into them at a young age, starting around grade 7, where they have to maintain their grades to get a good high school, to get a good university, where they're scouted and hired by a company that they then probably work at for the rest of their life. changing jobs on a whim is rarer in japan than it is in the west, its all about sticking it out and climbing the corporate ladder, which also means their only friends are their coworkers who are in the exact same boat they are. still, japan is better than somewhere like china and they're the healthiest asian country in terms of social progress, so it's not all bad.

Pat's surprisingly apt at identifying industry trends in this one. I'd add, games-as-service means reviews before and immediately after release are becoming less and less representative of what the game becomes 3-6 months later or 3-6 years later. Games reflect their studios, morphing, living and dying like an organism. Studios blossom and grow, hollow and wither. Workers crunch unrealistic deadlines, lose bonuses based on Week 1 review scores, patch and patch until it meets snuff, and get laid off en masse since marketing depts can't out and say "AAA Anchor From Last Year: It's Good FINALLY" Until game workers unionize and retain basic levels of labor protection, I see no reason to expect consistency in any given studio's output no matter how big the name. I'd claim the opposite in fact, the bigger the studio, the bigger the title, there's LESS guarantee of quality and polish.

really weird how people dont mention Borderlands 1/2/Presequel when they discuss these loot shooters, which was by far the best implementation of the genre in the last ten years.
@redwidow13585 жыл бұрын
Edit: Well not really edit but I'm going back after typing all the stuff below to add this I think people should compare Metroid Prime's loading screen problems to it tbh. I myself had to deal with the bug where certain cutscenes will always crash your game and you're just boned forever. The fix came with later versions of the disc that used a different method of loading assets. So my question is this; how long would it take for Bioware to develop a new loader or optimize the current one to prevent long-ass loading screens and make enemies spawn in properly? Anyway, moving on to the Borderlands-related other stuff. Even with repetitive quests, sometimes very boring things that feel forced, and a bit of the same-y feeling loot, there was still a very big variety and the game had so much else going for it. The art was simple enough to not use too much processing power but still look good. The guns and grenades and whatnot feel and look different enough to be easily distinguished from one another at a glance. Characters and dialogue and scenes with good writing, great jokes and references and stupid gags throughout the whole game. A villain with good intentions but a bad method of creating his envisioned utopia, yet who is still enough of a dick to make you *want* to kill him. Little bits of extra lore and story that make the world feel big and lived in. Plus, you get permanent optional stat boosts just for doing extra stuff like finding symbols, getting a certain number of kills under whatever circumstance, and killing certain insanely powerful enemies on your own. The series can be repetitive, and sometimes boring, but everything feels like it matters in some way and the world around you is still fun enough to warrant you as the player returning for more gameplay. Nothing keeps you in Anthem. If I wanna play a mech suit game that's fun and finished, I'll play MechAssault. If I wanna see the cute wildlife animals, I'll Google screenshots of the model. If I want to stare at a loading screen for a longer time than playing the game will last, I'll set my screensaver to start after one minute and make a sucky graphic that moves around a little. Also my new favorite word is "schlooter" and you can bet your ass I'm going to use it all over the place when I talk about these kinds of games

11:00 Monster Hunter World prime example. During the first two weeks, Slice Ammo was the best ammo in the game, because it stunlocked monsters and dealt a bazillion damage without needing good aim. Capcom nerfed it. Everyone who enjoyed Bowguns is upset, because their weapon now sucks.

I expect it to follow suit with the terrible trends everyone is doing. It is owned by Take Two and, let's face it, they are not much better than EA and Activision when it comes to being scummy.
@elijahnakumura43755 жыл бұрын
originalscreenname44 Idk about Take Two’s history personally, but I feel Borderlands could do it right with its massive amounts of guns/assets etc. Handsome Jack would totally throw a free-for-all like that lol. On the business side it could be horrible tho, as with all games nowadays

One of my favorite fun-bugs is FaN jumping in Team Fortress 2. It originally was patched out then reintroduced in another patch a month later. People literally design their entire Scout strategy and setup by that technique. It basically breaks 2fort.

Pat saying "Live Service Shooters" aren't popular... Rainbow Six Siege continue's to get millions of new players and maintains a ridiculously high level of monetary gain even being a game going into its fourth year. Before that, the model was CS:GO and things of the like.

that's just a semantics argument, you know he specifically means borderlands style shlooters
@TheBravery7675 жыл бұрын
@@Cizal But the problem with that is that no one who has referred to "live service shooters" is referring to Borderlands style shooters, I can't even think of a "Borderlands style" shooter that could be qualified as a live service at all.

@@TheBravery767 they're referring to destiny, which is just borderlands but a little more pretentious and online. therefore borderlands style. you're awfully enamored with semantics aren't you?
@TheBravery7675 жыл бұрын
@@Cizal Your really gonna say that Destiny and Borderlands are competing for a similar chunk of the market? That seems a lot more enamored with semantics of the genre to me. Just because they share similar aspects and you could argue share an audience, although I'd say many of them aren't, your completely ignoring how these games are measured as successful. Borderlands had good sales and will be remembered as a pretty good game overall, but even if Destiny opened to good sales, it wouldn't be enough for the publishers if there isn't enough recurrent revenue from in-game monetization and continued player retention. Games like Borderlands that aren't focused on recurrent player retention aren't held to the same standard of continued development support post-launch.
